Update
Great chapter. RD got it trough her head and the Princesses now know what is coming. It will not be stopped and one can only hope they developed anti rifle spells to not get sniped one day...
Is the next chapter finally gonna justify the M rating? *wink**wink*
10609350
Also, how is it that i see you everywhere?
Well all I can say is: GET DOWN! WE NEED FIRE SUPPORT! GET ALPHA SQUADRON IN THE AIR! AND WHERE THE HELL IS ALPHA NINER!
10609387
The future chapter might look like that!
10609395
Maybe.
Also old reference: ALPHA NINER, SCRAMBLE! Roger control.
10609386
Activ reader that takes time commenting. I can recommend literally hundred of storys that are in my bookshelfs because there sooo good. Topic: Changeling? Griffon, D-Dog, human or perhaps something to your
Comedic or more seriouse stuff? I found quite a lot of good storys
10609398
That perhaps?
The art here is rather adorable
The lost soldier home visits were saddening to read. Really nailed the significance and somber mood of it well. It's a side of war not many get to see. Only those giving and recieving such grim news.
I'm glad Celestia has decided to mull over Jack's word on developing more advanced weaponry like his. It's a slippery slope that can lead to damnation.
Also really relieved that Jack got through to Rainbow about how unbelievable quick it can all end with these weapons involved.
Overall, this chapter helped wrap up the mission and its results in griffonstone.
10609405
NOPE! hint:MOO2
Same producers though.
He should ask Twilight for some prepared , easy to activate spell to burn his weapons.
Like a gem, you tap 3 times and will melt into a lava and then expand into a circle of lava
He can't throw it into a natural lava pit because it would take too long.
10609429
Nah, just rig something up to detonate the actions so that they don’t work any more.
10609430
There is a chance fo something be left .
But he shouldn't give them it in any way.
Even the insides, casing, etc
So they won't take any data from it.
And he should take action if something will happen to his equipment.
If it will be either Celestia stealing it
Or in about 2 weeks some soldiers will start parading, out of nowhere, with rifles or something more advanced than griffons muskets.
That would mean they dissembled it partially so they wouldn't get caught
In both cases, he should give the plans of griffons and Equestrian muskets (that could be more advanced than griffons if they touched his equipment )
Equestria having a monopoly should be quickly removed.
Major powers, like Equestria, will exploit it, like the United Kingdom did with its colonies.
There is a difference between an old-style monarchy and a modern one, but Equestria isn't the modern one.
Especially when rulers have physical powers, strength and will use it to cause fear in enemies and subjects .
Because that's the only type of respect they understand
10609438
If you detonate the actions yo leave them a barrel and a frame, not much that can be done with that.
His oath to his country, the one you made in military, etc should be more important than the one made from necessity.
The moment he gives ,or worse trades his military equipment to a foreign nations,he is fucked .
Not only from a shaming from media ,people, family, friends but also the legal stuff
10609455
Yeah... He is literally on another planet. Perhaps another universe. Hes option are currently this 'nice' because they give him that option.
I can recommend a story were your version of thinking is 'optimistic'.
10609464
Him giving them it would be also worse than him selling it to Russia, North Korea, etc
Not only from a legal, oath standpoint but also a moral one (I think it's the right word)
Why?
Because he would give them a new means of cheap and easy killing.
He will introduce something he shouldn't ,at least at that level
If you don't see the problem ,then think if he would give the mustard gas.
Now you should get it.
It would be completely different if he would give them something else, like a pain killer or a tape
10609470
Your missing the point.
Its not about what he gives em.
Its about what they allow him to keep and when.
One order, one order away from losing everything he 'owns' and he will not longer be a 'guest' but a prisoner. He is one Griffon! VS a hole world.
If it was a Griffon on earth his ass would be stripped of equiment and weapons the second they meet him. He wouldnt be a 'welcome respected guest' but a lab rat that has to jump when and how high he is told.
Or things become VERY VERY unfriendly.
I find it a little odd that the author doesn't make any use of the fact that equestria is a world of magic. Magic, which, as we know for sure from the show, has overwhelming destructive power in some cases, which almost completely eliminates the risk factor associated with the emergence of more advanced weapons. And so purely for reference, the crossbow has a firepower comparable to primitive muskets and crossbows Equestrians can make without a main hero, since bows exist in this universe. Muskets are generally the next stage in the development of artillery guns. Where are these guns at the griffins (which, for example, can be equipped with buckshot against flying targets)?
Depending on how prevalent the musket designs are a lot of the damage is already done. The ponies will presumably win, possibly with a lot of losses and there's no way they won't reverse engineer. At the same time, you can't jump straight to automatic.
Quite a mess but I feel like it'd be within his wheelhouse [and probably for the best] to give the ponies muskets and put them on even footing.
Looking forward to the next chapter.
10609506
I agree. They Equestrians playing nice at the moment but ones they run out of patience the musket is worth a fart if they drop magic bombs via 'Unicorns'.
Hell... 'Earth Ponys' could in theory reroute the earths nutriens and 'Pegasus' ruine the weather (heatwaves, freezing temperatur or plain rain all day long.)
Batponys for regular nightraids.
Dont even start with Alicorns.
If it comes to a arms race:
Magic wins anyway.
Homing magic arrows, shield spells, dark magic etc.
10609501
You are missing it too.
That's why he should make sure they won't get anything and not let them stomp on him.
He is fucked if he won't do anything, stop them and he is fucked if he will give it to them ,so he should make sure they won't get anything..
Especially if they want to imprison him or kill him when they will get it.
Even in the end, if he will die or be captured ,they at least won't win and get what they want.
It would be like a spat to the face to a backstabber.
You look at it from some cliche movies views, like the classic alien experimented in area 66 movies.
Considering that he would back in his country and not in China or North Korea he wouldn't be experimented on without his consent.
His words, information(like history, army identification information, etc) and his equipment should be proof who he was before.
He wouldn't be just let go for many reasons.
Like that someone would try to catch him , like shady companies, slave dealers, terrorists ,spies ,etc
He would be brought to a secure place so everything that he says would be confirmed, and he would be talked to.
Later they would make tests like xrays ,blood tests, etc as long as he allows it.
but generally, he wouldn't be a prisoner ,but like in a witness protection kind of deal
Think about it like some SCPs are treated, like SCP-999.
The safe ones are allowed to free roam the facility ,talk with others ,etc
Even if they wanted to let him go ,they can't for his own safety, because he would be targeted by everyone in one way or another .
10609513
Not really
Remember that unicorns with the power of Twilight or Shining Amor is a rarity.
It's not only biological but also external, like what they did in their lives.
Also, relying on purely genetic strength in war is a death wish.
It would be l like creating an army made of 1% or even less of your population.
And these things don't even fit to their mindset and capabilities.
Also ....wow
Dark magic really?
Also about magic shields
There are no bullet-resistant shields, you’ll also feel an impact hitting the shield.
It will either penetrate or destroy the shield making the next bullet penetrate it.
You are just saying magic that and magic that because magic.
Also, griffons can use weather magic too.
Even then it all comes crashing down with one word........ponies.
They are peaceful ponies, who won't just think "oh a seeking missile" and especially won't know how to create one.
Griffons would be stronger in quantity and quality, effectiveness by making even average soldier better than Equestrian my equipment alone, with things like artillery even more.
Also Equestrian magic is unreliable and even then pure strength won't bring Equestria victory.
All griffons have to do, is to for example use good strategy like, Defeat in Detail
Literally what Jack said in this chapter
More like a big targets, concentrated fire would pierce any shield or armor.
In the end, they aren't predators and don't have the right mindset to war ,and wouldn't forgive themselves if they killed so many lives(on both sides) when they could have traded for peace, give them independence .
10609520
What do you mean Jack’s fucked? If Celestia really wants Jack’s guns, she doesn’t have to fight jack, just teleport his guns away while he’s sleeping. Or invite Jack over for tea, roofie his drink, take his guns while he’s out, and then let him go once he wakes up.
And it’s not like Jack will defect to the other side if Celestia does do this. Jack will be pissed and say she’s making a mistake, but he won’t fight her about it. He gets why she’s doing it, and will try to change her mind, but it’s not like he can brute force anything.
The only way he can really stop her is if he gets Twilight to fully side with him so she can do something, but getting Twilight to work against Celestia isn’t something you should count on.
The second Celestia decides that protecting her ponies is more important than Jack’s wishes, those guns are gone, and odds are Jack himself will be in no harm.
10609584
Because it's his responsibility
Like he said he is carrying a Pandora’s Box
He also knows history well enough to know what it will lead to.
And how Equestria will act with that unfair advantage, abuse it and oppress others
If she stepped down to that level and uses tricks like that then for sure she won't just leave him alone.
He shouldn't do nothing and let them just take it, nor he should just give it to them.
The consequences will hunt him down one way or another.
By not letting them to have it, he can prevent these 2 outcomes.
And even then by later dying or surviving, at least he won't regret not taking action and destroying his equipment
Cute pics, but when did Dash grow a horn?
Jack might have to allow his weapons to be examined though, hes going to run out of ammo soon and muskets arent the greatest.
Ya know, after all these years you would think sunbutt would realize not everything isn't the same as how ponies do things, she has gone to other nations, gone to war, she has seen nearly everything but yet she doesn't realize that the griffins don't work the same as Her ponies
Critics be like: "oh? You dare challenge me?"
The device 'that can bring the sun to the ground, and annihilate an entire city: the atomic bomb'. Basically the end game of Pandora's box.
The "guns are bad" argument doesn't hold as much water when the people you're withholding guns from are actively getting shot at. Will he proactively go around destroying Griffish muskets to preserve the technological innocence of Equestria?
Due to feeling a little more annoyed by it than usual, here is a small reality check about equines.
Most people really have next to no clue about the reality, if they are not entirely trapped in fantasy land when it comes to equines.
Horses are actually some of the most dangerous land animals alive, but we usually only encounter the domestic common case.
They are giant slabs of muscle that happen to like humans that tend their needs.
Let me ruin your unreality a bit: http://www.lrgaf.org/deadly_equines.htm
Been a while since I read about them, but horses can digest about 12 different kinds of protein.
They can easily survive on more foods than humans, including meat.
An herbivore is just an opportunistic carnivore in the wild.
Deer have been documented as the first animals to start eating a carcass before 'meat eaters' show up.
There is, simply put, a much better caloric energy density in meat than plants.
Love the rainbow dash fluff moments haha, keep up the good work!
10609821
Going by that logic, they should be listed as omnivores. However, they are classified largely only in what they need to survive. Herbivores by large do not hunt. Yes I perfectly understand what you and that article are saying. I will bring up a small reminder though, we are dealing in a fictional realm based on a children’s show mainly full of magical tiny horses on this site. The truths of reality do not apply here, just as the laws of fiction do not apply to reality.
I apologize for any remark that may ire you in this. I just don’t feel a reminder of how it works in reality is exactly needed in a fictional realm
10609593
What I'm reading in the story so far, I'm getting the distinct feel that Jack isn't the one holding Pandora's Box--and that it's already wide open by now.
The show already tells us they already had cannons and fireworks, Something else has happened to get the griffons riled up enough for a cluster of them to pull off a coup d'état like that, and Jack's purpose for being there is to fix it.
It's currently up to Jack to finally realize it.
10610300
Yep and giving Equestria technological superiority and firepower, by giving them much more advanced guns, won't fix it but escalate it ,the war, and the situation in general.
Maybe even making Equestria use it to oppress and completely abuse it against nations with basic muskets or without any at all.
Even then,Celestia doesn't realize it yet but ponies aren't good at and used to keeping something like that as a secret.
The plans to advanced rifles would be stolen or they would be leaked quite fast, making the whole point of taking them and destroying good relations with Jack pointless.
This would change from a revolution to a World War
It takes him quite a lot of time, to connect the dots with revolutions from his world .
He already pointed out Celestia's mistakes when ruling griffons,so he should be close.
10609737
Progressiv and constructing evolution of tech is needed. I agree that sane steps need to be taken.
I think they should simply avoid doing it the american way.
Giving hand guns to children that dont even understand what 'death' is. And for the love of anything... Military personal only
10610331
You use human logic. Dont really fit with MLP logic. Than again its the point of this story... Kinda
10610428
Sorry, but that's a "big no" on both your points.
The American way ISN'T just "giving guns to children".
Kids already DO know what death is, and RESPONSIBLE Americans TEACH their kids gun safety and responsibility.
The plague of gun violence is the result of Americans NOT teaching their kids any sort of responsibilities.
And you can ALWAYS count on the Military to NEVER abuse their power [/sarcasm]
Okay, if you think the military will NEVER abuse their power when they're the only ones with guns, then please explain how countries like Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, and others like them are "such bastions of civil rights". Or better, how Seattle's "CHAZ" was such a success.
10610457
My brother oldest daughter learn with 10/11 what death was. Not all kids know what death is. Or in particular that it is a permanent thing.
You picked the bad examples of nations just as i picked the most famouse for missuse of guns and literally allowing children to use em even if supervised.
Pretty braindead concept but thats beside the point
Military goods shouldnt be used by civilians. Gavourment Institutes like police have restricted arsenals for a reason. Trigger happy cops come from bad training and/or the treat that civilians potencial to match or surpass the firepower.
I for instance live in a nation were civilian cant even have a knife with em.
Martial arms training are enough for selfdefense.
Help learn respect and sane judgement wile it get teached.
Bonus:
Better body fitness and awareness.
10610243
Heh, you need not worry, and I appreciate your own perspective in response.
Having written some of my own fiction, I was not bothered by the fictional stance itself.
It was a matter of nuances of presentation that annoyed me.
More specifically, the notion that what is generally classified as a prey species is somehow always tending to be timid, less violent, or more agreeable.
In truth, what any living creature needs to survive is not what they eat, but what is in what they eat. Once you separate that in your mind as a basis of understanding, you quickly recognize most critters are far more omnivorous than is generally presumed. Researchers were surprised to document the deer being first to start eating carcasses, but it all lines up in the breakdown of why.
Taken a different way, consider what would happen if a horse (or most any animal, or person for that matter) were intentionally trained to be a violent, meat-eating hunter?
A horse trained to fight as a first reaction would be even more likely to hunt and kill tigers, or anything else. A horse is generally bigger and stronger than a tiger, as it is. And as noted in part of the information I linked, it is historically documented that an english horse taken to India beat up a tiger, after turning into a man-eating murderous beast.
The misrepresentation of limits of temperament in prey animals is what I was really on about.
In that point, the logic was broken, despite most of the rest of the story being very well thought out.
Quite frankly, this story has been beautifully refreshing in how it is approaching matters as a general rule and is a delightful read.
10610553
You have not spent much time looking at root causes for how people behave, the way you speak.
As such, you are never going to understand things like the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, and why it has NO restrictions (there are examples of private purchase of ship-borne artillery cannons by Americans from the American government, because they had reason for it, and the Founding Fathers knew about rapid fire guns, because some early ones existed at the time).
The real problem you should focus on is personal responsibility.
Most people avoid that like the plague, then wonder why they have problems, or things are not adding up or working like they expected.
The proper instruction of firearms in the USA includes safety protocols, proper care, and respect of the risks.
Problems under this method, when it is done as it should be, are negated down to accidents nobody could reasonably avoid.
Things like misfires should never happen outside of faulty equipment, which also is covered by proper inspection and care of equipment.
That people have guns is not the problem, as they are inanimate tools that do nothing but sit and corrode without a person being involved.
People failing or refusing to be responsible for their own actions is THE root cause of almost every problem in this world.
10610725
I sometimes struggle with the american mind set
Indeed. Its always someone else failure when shootings start. But killing someone with your own hand and feet is a struggle. Its not just a pull of a trigger. Firearms are military goods. Civilians should like Police men and woman get trough background checks and deep mental/psychological evaluations before getting hands on em if at all.
A 'like' for a calm and well thought out response.
10609537
1% sounds enough for a lot of deadly spec ops teams to strike the head of the serpant/bird/what-ever.
10611729
It comes down to if you believe you have the right to defend yourself. If yes, why not with firearms? A criminal is going to get a weapon regardless of the law. It is regrettable if a gunfight starts but does that change the fact you have the right to defend yourself?
There's a very big difference between a civilian and a police officer or soldier. The former would carry a firearm in case a criminal comes for them, the latter two carry them because they are going towards the danger. The reason police, but mainly military, gets through evals because it's expected of them to make sound decisions in high stress environments which they are deliberately sent into.
10611849
Example:
America has a deathtoll in shooting enough to be classified as civil war. Every - singel - year
i checked.
I googled 5 following years ( 2014-2019 ) to make a good example.
Take a nation without military goods allowed for Civilian use. Than its a lot of other cases but not nearly as many and police dont have to kill so often to stop it.
10611929
I'd like a source on that since civil war isn't just about shooting people. And the total death toll isn't everything, you have to take population into account as well, the US has 300 million people living there after all.
It comes down to about 12 firearm-related deaths per 100-thousand each year, 4,7 of which are homicides. That's quite a lot but not catastrophic like some other countries that easily go above 20 per 100k. But that's not taking into account the number of guns there are in the US, about 120 per 100 individuals. Now let's take a shithole like Venezuala, it has around 18 guns per 100 individuals but a gun death toll of 50 per 100k.
Source Yes, Wikipedia but I hope they can at least do numbers well.
So more guns does not immediately mean more crime, there are more factors to take into account like culture, gangs and other criminal enterprises. Of course, more guns will mean a heightened amount of use of them simply because of accessibility but it isn't as simple an issue. These are the numbers but that's not even taking into account the arguments that some would rather have freedom over safety and are willing to make the trade.
Again, freedom over security but even with that a lot of military equipment is illegal to have for civilians in the US. See grenades and other explosives designed for combat (This excludes things like dynamite used for mining etc.)
This is also multi-factored. Again, more guns equal more opportunities for them to be used. But Police killing because there's a threat to their own lives is sad but if a criminal decides to put an officer in that situation then I'm not shedding a tear.
*damn this got long, I really don't like writing long essay comments
