One lovely night, a mystery object appeared in the night sky. Twilight spotted it and, thanks to her new telescope, is able to track it as it races towards her home. What is it? Where did it come from? More importantly, can she stop it from crushing Canterlot?

"She has cleared the bodies from any rooms still holding pressure."
So, did she toss them out the airlock?
:rainbowlaugh:

8690197
Probably. They are just bodies at this point, after all- and she doesn't like burying people. Besides, what better cremation than atmospheric reentry?

Well, this sounds fun!

That was a confusing author's note.

Happy to see an update here.

Whatever exploration device mentioned there is probably unnecessary, though. Also she's been spotted already, not that she knows it.

What happened to the rest of the crew? Dead, or vanished? That was never specifically answered, I think.

8756565
Yes, it's probably unnecessary.... As for the rest of the crew, that was answered in Chap. 2, if I remember correctly: They all simply died.

8756806
There are bodies, then? I was never sure. I thought that the lifesign scanners simply drew a null, and I can't remember if she looked for them. Pardon my crappy memory.

Also, what the heck are lifesign scanners, anyway? Sci-Fi always has something like that, but aside from a motion sensor, what are they? How do you detect something as esoteric and yet physically mundane as life, anyway? That starts getting into metaphysics or something...

8757234
Yes, there were bodies- as I recall, it's mentioned somewhere that she's run some through the medbay and eventually jettisoned them. As for lifesign scanners... Probably (in this case, at least) a suite of different scanners, each hunting for a different sign of life- heartbeat, body temperature, motion, and so on.

Just the ONE missile? That seems odd.

Somewhat surprised that Pinkie was not able to somehow speak the language of the human, though. :D

It would be interesting to see this from the perspective of the Equestrians soon. I'm not too clear on what Twilight detected on the missile drives, and given that this was from the viewpoint of someone unable to speak the language, it would be a good idea.

She yelps audibly when she feels it. The feeling is weak- far weaker than itshouldbe at only ten kilometers, but it’s definitely there. Something is using strange magic, so powerfully contained its signature is nearly undetectable, even with all of the amplification spells she has on her observation room, even with her castle’s natural amplification to that same room. Even with all that, it’s still definitely strange. She takes a second to zero in on its position… And almost as soon as she’s done, it disappears completely. She takes off to gather her friends.

Five minutes later, when they teleport to the site, all they find is an empty field. No traces of any abnormal magic can be found- and they end up returning home disappointingly empty-handed.

I think that was the other missile, the one not in town?

But there's also another one in town that they went to investigate, which is when Twi got abducted?

8759741
Um.... Yes. Kinda. Once upon a time, I drew a rough sketch of this ship- or at least, of an old model. In that drawing, it's pointed towards the lower-left corner... See the two big booster/missile things on the back sides? This ship has those too- except their paired, with two (vertically adjacent) on each "wing". And each of them is a missile.
Now consider just how big this ship is... and try finding how heavy those missiles are.

As for that 'weak feeling' Twilight had- that's our non-Equestrian's little 'rift gate', which she used to jump her 'native' body out near the missile. Powerful technology... THIS system is very limited, in gate size, range, and frequency... Though it's normally used to get people from/to the surface from orbit... So "limited range" is relative, I suppose.

As for the missiles... There's the one in town she's going to investigate; there's the one laying across the top of Canterlot's mountain; and there's two more that managed to stick themselves in the plains North of Canterlot (Unicorn Plains, I think they're called). So, she's recovered just one of these missiles. Remember, the four of them make up 15% (or so) of the entire ship's loaded mass...

8759862
Okay, I've got it now, but you I thought she had already picked up a missile by the time she made it to town.
Dunno why; it's not the case, but it's what I thought I had read. I am not sure that means I am being an ID-10-T or if that means that it's confusing.

8760004
Ahh... maybe. I know she talked about needing to check the drive zones before ordering the recall, and she mentioned having a rift engine working properly. Oh- and the error code you're looking for is "1-D-10-T"... aka "keyboard to chair interface error". I do believe it has not occurred.

8760169
That's a new take on the keyboard one, certainly. I have heard of PEBKAC, but interface error is new.

8761059
Ahh... well, the user usually is the interface between the keyboard and the chair... XD (My dad used to work tech support, keyboard to chair interface errors and 1-D-10-T errors occurred a lot there)

8761092
I caught that, yes.

You may want to make it more apparent that Twilight is not locked in. The original didn't specify where the opening of that gate was, and "She would not be a prisoner" is not very clear on who it is talking about. I believe that the context made it look like she was talking about herself.

8761116
It did.... "On the platform".

Argh! I suppose I did ask, but it is hard to keep track of time jumps like that.

What was the drink supposed to be? I imagine it was some sort of magic-replacement or similar, since that seemed to be the issue, but despite rift-tech, how would our unnamed protagonist know how to solve it? As far as I am aware, the humans don't have native magic, so how could they fix it in others, especially since she does not have real genetics, just something made to look like an Equestrian?

8762674
My theory being that, while the ship may be capable of generating those rift gateways, that doesn't mean they're necessarily safe for living beings to pass through. The 'native' avatar was fine; its life was merely projected life, so its passage was just like the passage of a brick. Twilight, on the other hand....
Of course, a system this powerful, you're bound to have SOMEONE that steps through it "by accident". So, undoubtedly, they keep some antidote on hand, for just when that happens- and that's what she'd fetched, preventing the damage caused to Twilight from resulting in her death. It actually had nothing to do with magic- just a lot of technology... Nevermind that Twilight's magic simply didn't function while her body was so damaged- had she not been covered in that rift shield, it would have put her back together and healed her up in a matter of minutes, before returning to function. Once she was fixed, there was no reason for it to divert itself... Except that rift shield. Our protagonist had closed the gate back out when she realized Twilight was having this problem; the things are dangerous to living beings, and she didn't want to be responsible for the next funeral, among other things. Especially after disposing of ninety-three thousand deceased crewmates on her way in...

In the end, she'll probably drag Twilight to some bay or another, stuff her in an aircraft, and fly to Ponyville.

8762725
That makes sense. I'm not sure what sort of damage the gates could cause that isn't instantly lethal (or that a tech-potion could fix), but aside from that, it works.

Is this a crossover?

8790167
No, this is not. This starship- and its captain- are original.

As a further aside, both of you need avatars. :D

8790316
'both of you'... You mean spaceship & pilot, or...?

8790618
I meant you and the person you replied to. :D
Default profile images, and all that. I usually choose some sort of awesome-looking dragon artwork.

8791225
Ahh.... Whatever. XD maybe someday. I don't generally bother with that kind of thing.

ten to the ninety-first power tons of TNT

You might want to double-check your numbers. That's like... ~14 nonillion (1.4e31) times the total mass-energy of the observable universe. :rainbowlaugh:

8803544
Eh. It's only an estimate, anyways... Who's to say they'e accurate- or even anywhere close?

:pinkiehappy: Yes, I know SciFi Writers Have No Sense Of Scale, but... Do I have to? :scootangel:

8803588
IMO, it would make more sense narratively to show the power of the weapon by describing its effects (eg. "can blow up a star"), than providing an explicit value that's so catastrophically "out of range" as to be nonsensical and is guaranteed to grab the attention of irritating pedants like myself.

8804997
Good point. To that end...

The four Starcracker missiles are each genocidal weapons. When fired, they instantly decimate space for a range of a couple lightyears around, eliminating everything, both in N-space and in rift space. Planets, stars, singularities. Everything. No, even our heroine's ship can't protect itself against just the fringes of that blast.

Those spinal Thunderer cannons... pack that same amount of damage into a single target with a single shot. Nevermind the thing is capable of speeds of around 600 rounds/min, across all six weapons. Predictably, nothing in the known universe can tolerate its fury. Not even a singularity. Speaking of which, if she uses all six in tandem, they form a singularity cannon! ... Short-lived singularities, but still...

Yes, I know, it's a Mary Sue ship. I knew that long before I started this story.

Eeesh, reminds me of the ridiculous stuff the ships in the Culture setting get upto. That's kinda Gridfire on steroids! :rainbowlaugh:

There are a few with watermarks, but you can probably use the visit site option to find one without, or search on similar (drag the image into the Google Images search bar). I saw a few that would work really well, though.

I suggest downloading the image (view in new tab, then save as) and storing it somewhere safe (Photobucket tends to remove access, so not there) if actually using it as an illustration. I see a lot of them that are saved in cdn.fimfiction, so there's got to be some way to upload them here.

Have a (not so) new song I found!

and conscience-

I see that one a lot. You mean consciousness. Conscience refers instead to the sense of right and wrong.

To her surprise, Princess Celestia expressed an interest in that kind of ability as well- though, only if the second form couldalsouse magic, even if only by channelling her normal power. Celestia and Luna had both declined to answerwhythey’re interested.

Well, either they are liches in this world, or "Sunny Skies" wants more options when disguised. Wonder which it is...

I question her ability to write in Equestrian after one letter, though, no matter how verbose it is. Ignoring it for sake of not having a three month interlude on languages. :D

The ribbon was a nice touch. Purplesmart may be annoyed when she finds out. I wonder if Discord will say anything...

8825457
No, they're not liches- but imagine if you were Celestia, and you suddenly could be in two places at once- in the throne room, dealing with business as usual, and on a beach someplace, relaxing. Yes, not quite as relaxing as if she's in only one place, on that beach... But it sure beats being only in the throne room. Luna's probably going for something similar- though that might relate to taking care of two nightmares at once. She's got an entire country's worth each night- no doubt she doesn't have time for them all!

As for her ability to write in Equestrian... Eighty-three pages is plenty for a supercomputer to figure something out. As for writing in Equestrian... While she has downloaded the written language into her mind, so far she's only printed it.

Yes, I imagine Purplesmart is going to be very annoyed when she finds out. Speaking of Discord... He might play a part in that, as well...

8825791
The lich thing was a joke, since there's been speculation as to how they are immortal, and it DOES fit well with the remote-meat-car-piloting idea.

Another idea for one of your stories: Introduce Pinkie Pie to coffee (Turkish, if you REALLY want to be evil).

By hearing of the Royal Equestrian Court, we have decided in favor of identifying simple translation spells as lethal.

Celestia, stop greeting foreign dignitaries with the Funniest Joke in the World.

9517329
Because I forgot to update the story status- thanks for the reminder.

That's going to be a fun diplomatic incident!

Gotta work on those slight side-effects to the translation spell. :rainbowlaugh:

I have this morbid-yet-funny mental image of a bunch of dead avatars slowly burying everyone on that hill...

It's ironic that the translation spell is both the cause and the cure for the issue... If it were to work at least.

To bad this got canceled

You know, I'm going to have to agree with you. Maybe I'll rewrite or reactivate it at some point?
