Yeah, the ponies are a buncha hypocrites. NO army and if they had one, they ALL suck and don't even DESERVE to defend if all they're gonna do is be living statues. The closest thing they have to "defense" are six civillian mares (except one) with no penchant for fighting and ponies as a collective while are paranoid, pacifistic, speciest xenophobes. Sure, they're good diplomats, but that's just about it.
I feel like this fic is a satire on pony culture as a while.
i love people who don't understnd what happens to standing armies in peacetime, much less 1000 years of peace or a basic understanding of situations and what can and cannot be handled by a regular army. (Hint, none of the villians in the show can be handled by a regular army even if they were all battle hardened)

I still fall into the camp that Equestria couldn't possibly have existed for a thousand plus years if they where weak like this. So while I guess I get the idea, I don't like it.

Well, that's the thing; the thousand years of peace ended the second Nightmare Moon escaped from her prison. If the ponies had any bit of foresight whatsoever, they'd think "Oh crap, that ancient legend turned out to be real! We should prepare ourselves, just in case any other old legends turn out to be true!" And thought, threats like Discord and Tirek are things that the army couldn't possibly handle, the two separate changeling invasions is the exact threat they should be able to handle.
The first invasion? It's absolutely atrocious that they couldn't handle bugs their own size and ones that a baker, a dressmaker, a weathermare, a farmer, an animal caretaker and a magic student could take on by themselves. And without the use of any armor or weapons! I think we can agree that some sort of substantial military training would've been helpful here.
And the second? Nopony fucking noticed when the Elements and every princess got captured and replaced by changelings! Like, at all! This type of situational blindness is not something that should be widespread throughout a legion of guards, tasked with protecting their princesses and the common ponies of Equestria!
