[Please click 'More' - a bit of explanation comes after the description!]

Some years ago, contact between Earth and Equestria was established, allowing for both humanity and ponykind to cross over to each others' worlds. Immediately, Princess Celestia tasked the Elements of Harmony with conducting outreach missions to Earth - to learn humanity's ways, culture, history, technology, and sciences.

During one particular avenue of study on Earth, Twilight Sparkle and Fluttershy cross paths with one Doctor Ian Malcolm; a man shrouded in mystery, revered but misunderstood by his peers. What comes to pass is a chain of events that the ponies get ever further dragged into - industrial espionage, acts of international secrecy, and governmental cover-ups.

Twilight and Fluttershy learn the ugly truth behind the string of lies on an island nobody has rightly heard of - and it is here that the pair find themselves fighting for survival against monsters that have been extinct for sixty five million years.

A/N (Please read!) - Hello! This is my first attempt at anything really really long. I've been working on this on-and-off for nearly three years now and, at the time of writing this, think I'm about three quarters of the way through.

This is a crossover with The Lost World: Jurassic Park. I'm borrowing from both novel and film canon - the story is dated in 1997 (so film canon) but with a bunch of events that occur in the novel. The first two chapters or so are fairly faithful to the novel - as faithful as a story about the characters from My Little Pony wandering about on Earth can be.

I will not be re-telling either the film or novel but with ponies inserted. I plan on borrowing events and scenes from film and novel canon to some extent - for instance, the first few chapters remain faithful to the novel - but the overarching plot is of my own design.

The characters in the story all feature in the novel but many of them have qualities of their film canon counterparts. I imagined Sarah Harding as Julianne Moore when writing this, and Ian Malcolm as Jeff Goldblum (Goldblum is the one true Ian Malcolm, praise be to him.)

(I don't think you'll have had to read the novel / watched the film to make heads or tails of this. Hopefully. Let's see.)

This is a very wordy story. I've sort-of tried to emulate Crichton's writing style a little bit here, so there's a lot of high-brow sciency and philosophical-type stuff in here. Chaos theory plays a big role, for instance, and I've done my best to understand it but science isn't what I'd call my forte.

If you are after a story where dinosaurs rampage from the get-go, this won't be your jam. Sorry. I'm all for ponies running for their lives from Tyrannosaurs, but I wanted to explore other themes too - the dinosaur-y bits, though important, serve to further the plot and themes.

There is swearing and there is some gore. Characters get annoyed with each other a lot in this one, because a lot of them make very idiotic decisions. As such, they swear at each other. Also, dinosaurs eat people. There's gonna be some blood and gore and violence, so yeah. Just warning you. Might up the rating a bit later if required.

Twilight isn't an Alicorn. I guess this is sorta AU in that respect. But no, she's still just a Unicorn!

That's enough from me, I think. Enjoy!

First comment. Wooooooooo. I love you all!

By the way, I don't like this story. But I do like your writing, that's for sure. Props for that, mane. :moustache:

This story definitely shows promise. I'm liking it! But, I do have to ask which continuity this is in? Books or film? Because if film, we get Spino. If not, we get Carnotaurus. So, I'm hyped either way.

Just out of curiosity, from which is this fic based on: the movies or the novels? I feel like it's from the novels due to Dr. Malcolm's behavior.

Thanks for the comments! It's somewhere between novel and film canon - I think both are equally excellent and I've tried to blend whatI feel are the best bits of each. I picture Malcolm as Jeff Goldblum but with more of his novel counterpart's annoyed nature.

Edit: Check out the story description, I've gone into a bit more detail about canon and other things there.

6644129
I appreciate your honesty! Thank you.

6645436
Alright! But, now that means that we get BOTH Spino and Carno! Also, may wanna add an AU tag, with the whole "unicorn Twi" thing.

6647497

Ahaa, not gonna say exactly what species show up and when, but I can confirm that at least one of those makes an appearance. ;)

Thank you for the AU tag suggestion! I'd intended to tag it, but completely missed it when uploading the story. I've since added it.

Chapters two and three might make an appearance in the next week or so - I can't say for certain, but I intend to get them up soon!

I'm assuming while all this is happening, that Malcolm is meeting with Hammond? That or events will be very different from how the movie went.

6692103

All will be revealed. ;)

I don't think it's a spoiler if I say that events are currently and are going to be different to both film and book - I don't want to just re-tell either story with some ponies shoehorned in. This is pretty AU in that respect, but hopefully still a tale worth telling and enjoying (I hope!)

Thanks for the comment.

6694694
Awesome. You have no idea how much I hate it when stories end up with the whole "it's basically the same plot but with ponies" thing, there has to be noticeable differences for these things.

6695322

Yeah, I agree. Just because a story is a crossover doesn't necessarily mean "re-tell it as it is but insert ponies" - I guess it can do but personally I'd rather tell a slightly different story. Otherwise, it's sorta like reading a novelization, but with ponies, which to me doesn't seem like it'd allow for that much creativity.

Or something.

Thanks for following so far, hopefully the next few chapters will appear in the not too distant future.

A “ponies on Earth” fanfic that appears to be well written? And in Jurassic Park?
I am hooked! Pity it didn’t pierce through the sea of fanfics sprouting everyday. Sadly, most people seem to prefer stories with characters turning into trucks, superficial shipping and sex...

First we have “Ooooooh” “Woaaaa”... then we get screams and terror.
Things went wrong for the two ponies. Hopefully they will meet up with the good humans soon!
This is a seriously good and underrated fanfic. Pity it went under the radar.
I just hope you are going to come back and continue it...

Appreciated! Thanks for your kind words, and thanks for taking the time to read this. Although updates are (glacially) slow, I do plan on chipping away at this - at some point I'd like to think this will wind up being completed.

I've currently got a whole bunch already written but it's pending editing, and real life tends to be a busy and fickle mistress - so updates will occur as and when I can commit.

Thanks again though! Glad you're enjoying it :)

Sarah harding is an idiot who thought tigers were on the same level as t rexs

This levine guy is not so great.
He was not even brought on for the first jurassic park trial.

Great chapter again. Hope Twilight and Fluttershy (my 2 favourite ponies by the way  :yay: ) will reach the compound, alive. The humans better watch their own back as well. I’m afraid there will be some “RUN!!” moments in the meantime...
A truly underrated and underknown story there.

8524508
And don't worry about your speed. RL comes first.
If you call a few months glacially slow, then I wonder what you'd call some Incomplete or On Hiatus fics who have been waiting for years :raritywink:

I was just worried to see you hadn't logged in for a while when I discovered this wonderful fanfic. A lot of good authors have vanished without a word this year, and especially since this summer, leaving their incomplete fanfics behind...

These griffons are being unwise...
Nice touching scene with the 2 mares and the triceratops’ herd. But Twilight and Fluttershy better stay aware of their surroundings. Who knows what they will meet next.
Very good chapter again!

Huh, I wasn't aware the movie adaptation changed anything from the novel.

Great characterization here again!
Malcolm is as funny as he is in the movies (I didn’t read the books). Let’s hope they won’t go head to head with 2 tyrannosaurs.

8656283
Thank you! And I appreciate you keeping up with The Lost Ponies, certainly means a lot. :)

This chapter was honestly one of my favourite to write despite being light on ponies! The interplay between Thorne, Levine and Malcolm is really good fun to craft, especially Malcolm - as you say, his dry wit from the movies is something I feel that really shines in him as a character.

It would be interesting to see what might happen with the characters, InGen's 'mystery species' and a Tyrannosaur family, wouldn't it? ;)

8655608

I don't know if you've read the book for The Lost World but it's hugely different from the movie - not any better or worse, in my opinion - just different. A thoroughly good read and I'd recommend! Thanks for commenting. :)

8524764
Only in the movie. In the book, she was way more competent.

Dodgson should have watched Jurassic Park 2. Then he would have known capturing a baby T-Rex is suicide.
Twilight and Fluttershy have reached the compound! But they are no longer alone in the complex... they are not going to enjoy their cat and mouse party with the night hunters...

My response in a nutshell. :)

8748641

Appreciate your comments (as ever, Black Hoof!) and thanks for keeping up with the story, guys. Updates still progressing! I've been writing a particularly juicy chapter as of late... can't wait to get these published!

Ludlow! Ludlow! We've got Ludlow here!!

See? Nobody cares.

:)

8507840

This is a seriously good and underrated fanfic. Pity it went under the radar.

Well, at least it didn't go under our radars. :)

I will not be re-telling either the film or novel but with ponies inserted. I plan on borrowing events and scenes from film and novel canon to some extent - for instance, the first few chapters remain faithful to the novel - but the overarching plot is of my own design.

To use a well-worn quote: "You had my interest, but now you have my attention." I'm so sick and tired of crossovers that essentially retell the Same friggin story but with a few additions. I'll confess I've done similar in the past for a different fandom, and at the time it was fun to write, but looking back on it now.....yeah.

8656283
Good thing you didn't. Remember Malcom's leg being hurt after they picked him up after the first Trex attack and fleeing from it later? He died in the first book from an infection. The old man was killed by Compies (the dinosaur equivalent of Sea gulls. They have a full name, but I don't recall what it was. They attack the little girl in the start of the second movie).

8655608
They all did. Some moreso than others.

8758073

Thanks for your comment! I echo your sentiment; so many stories are just "the same plot but with ponies" which, to me, isn't exploring the creative opportunities afforded to the writer by using both fandoms. I've also done it in the past -certainly when I was younger and getting into fanfic writing - but for this I really wanted to create my own story. So far, so good, I feel. ;)

In other news: the dinosaur you're after is Compsognathus Longipes! Crafty little buggers, for sure.

Thanks for keeping up with the story and taking the time to comment; it's all very much appreciated. Hope you're enjoying events so far and with any luck the next update won't be too far into the future!

The way this is written promises great things. This reads like an actual book, and not a wish-fulfillment SNAFU. It's a shame my lunch break is over...

8758410

Appreciate your comment! Thank you. I've tried to keep it at a fairly "reads-like-a-book" quality of writing, so I'm glad you think so too. It's not always easy I must admit - there are a few passages I want to see play out later in this tale that would very much work on a big screen, but translating that into a way which works when written in prose is another matter altogether. Still. We'll see what occurs.

Thanks again for taking the time to read and comment! Always appreciated. The next chapter shouldn't be too far off; it's complete but I'm editing the hind legs out of it, and I've nearly caught up with myself with regards to what I've got written! There are a few big chunks further down the line that are already written; so I'm in the process of 'connecting the dots' in the story, if you will. :)

“Nonetheless, I can tell you both this, now, straight away –if he does follow through with his crackpot idea of going to find this ‘Site B’, I will not be joining him. Absolutely no way.”

Oh really, Malcom? *Knowing smile*
-
Building in the Gryphon lands likely would hold purpose two-fold:
1. given their nation is on the verge of economic collapse, it should be relatively cheap to build the 'dino-zoo' there.
2. Not needing to find a way to dodge both the laws both of earth's nations, and those in Equestria.

Given that gold and gems are probably more valuable to humans than to the locals of Magic-verse, they could make a huge amount more's worth of profit simply by gathering up the currency paid out for admission, melting it down, and shipping it home in bars to sell. There's probably more to it than that, but all else I can think of is exotic hunting from the dragons. They'd be about the only ones that could outright afford to have their own dinosaur grown in a lab for their sport.

8764549

Well, Dr Malcolm is a very presumptuous type...!

Indeed, Ludlow has his reason for wishing to build a dino-park off-planet as it were. Regarding the process of moving precious gems and metals across to Earth; it's a possibility indeed but all will be revealed in due course. ;)

Thanks for reading and commenting as always! Hope you're enjoying. :)

8655608
Are you kidding? The only similarity between the book and the film is the scene with the trailers.

The San Diego scene was the best change, in my opinion.

On an island of eat or be eaten, I think I'd have shot the critter with lethal rounds, too. Granted, now that it IS dead, and its mate has their scent, it's gonna be pissed, and won't be as cautious at approaching the New Creatures. Accurately shooting something big slowly approaching you is very different from shooting accurately at something big charging you and roaring.

Right? I mean, Rum is clearly superior to whiskey! :flutterrage:

And now I'm all caught up. Darn. Now what will I read on my lunch breaks??

8787433

Thanks for sticking with this! Appreciate you taking the time to enjoy.

Gonna be a little while before the next instalment unfortunately! This month has already been intensely busy and I think moving forward it's gonna be hectic, but I've got a good chunk of the story written as is - as usual, most of it is still pending editing. Watch this space though!

Thanks again.

8796582
Take all the time you need, and thanks for giving news!
Too many authors just stay silent, not giving any clue about even being still active, and leaving their stories "Incomplete" for months (and some for years...)

8806836

Not a problem! I appreciate the updates are sometimes a month or two apart, and I realise it's frustrating from a reader's point of view to be kept out of the loop when this occurs. I do what I can to update but also sometimes myself need a nudge! ;)

I've actually been working on the next chapter today; it's written and now mostly edited so it should make an appearance soon. There are two things to highlight, though: 1) It's going to be VERY long, and 2) the next update after that may also take some time!

Thanks for following The Lost Ponies - I appreciate you and everyone else keeping up with this. More to come soon! :)

8809375
It's alright. I'm eager to see what's going to happen in the upcoming chapter.

The fear feeling in this chapter is handled very well. The readers can imagine themselves next to the two mares as they try and stay hidden from the raptors... Great characterization of Twilight and Fluttershy as they fight their terror. The two equestrians will have nightmares for a while if when they make it.
They thought the compound would be a safe haven... It was a death trap.
Wonderful chapter here.

8812529

Thank you! I found this initially a very difficult chapter to write but after an editing spree, it seemed to all come together. More to follow, and thanks for keeping up as ever!

8524764
Don't blame Sarah on kidnapping the injured juvenile T-Rex, blame Nick for doing it!

Ya' know, this story is impressive, but it's hard to imagine the story.
