ForeverChasingRainbows

I read a lot, and occasionally write a few things of my own to pass the time. Mostly for myself, but some of it might end up here. Hopefully it's not too terrible.

T

A dark force from another world seeks an escape from its prison - and to create an entryway into a realm of limitless magic. With lawlessness and evil spreading from one desert frontier to another, Equestria was going to need an army of Marshals.

They got one.

Well, his horse actually.

He'll have to do.

A thought experiment about how a full size cybernetic horse, who also happens to be the last of his kind, might fare in a world full of little cartoon ponies turned into a couple of random scenes, then into a story with a plot and things. Powerful magical artefacts, the biggest hand-held positronic cannon this side of the galactic core and friendships on both sides of the divide are tested as everyone tries to figure out what exactly is going on, and how to stop Stampede invading Equestria.

Maybe it'll even be a good story. It's my first, so feel free to comment/give feedback. Maybe you'll make it better for everyone else reading it

EiE: Equestroid in Equestria
A BraveStarr/MLP crossover, because best horse needs to meet best ponies. No prior knowledge of BraveStarr is expected, but you should check the show out anyway. Or watch the pilot movie or something. It's pretty awesome.

Well, I'll be honest that I really didn't know what to expect when I saw a story with a picture of 30-30 on it, but this one s already better than what I did come up with. I look forward to reading more of this unlikely, but enjoyable crossover. Keep up the good work. =-O

6313290 Thanks! I've always sort of wondered why this hasn't been done up to now, seems like a pretty obvious crossover to pull with the amount of portal-hopping that goes on in BraveStarr. It's also different from the usual HiE stuff because Thirty is already pretty familiar with magic and several other things your average human character isn't.

I actually wrote this whole thing as a bit of a what-if for my own amusement. Then once it hit a couple hundred thousand words I thought "why the hell not" and started editing it into something a bit more readable. If it makes some other random person's day a little bit brighter, then bonus points :pinkiehappy:

Means there's a massive amount of this that's sort-of already written, which is a nice buffer for my terminally slow writing speed, but also there's a heck of a lot to edit :derpyderp1:

CCC

Nice setup, so far... now let's see how Thirty-Thirty does in an equine civilisation...

Pretty good thus far, please continue.

Please, for Thirty-Thirty's sake, have Twilight use a translation spell on him once he regains consciousness again.

CCC

6327529

Well, he could just manage via the universal translater stamped on Fluttershy's thighs... or run his life through charades, which Pinkie can probably pick up on pretty instantly, no matter how obscure. So it's not as if he's completely unable to communicate.

And given that Celestia/Luna have been in contact with Shaman, they might speak his language in any case...

6328964

Those are all good ideas.

Wonder how many they'll get to check before the plot catches up to them? :scootangel:

This needs more views and upvotes. Looking forward to the next chapter!

6337319
Thanks!

It's already got twelve more upvotes than I was expecting for something I basically wrote to amuse myself - hopefully it won't go horribly off the rails :derpytongue2:

I can't wait for Thirty-Thirty to wake up. There will be indeed 'fun'.

Really, this deserve more upvotes.

I am really liking this story so far :) keep it coming!

I looked up a few episodes of Bravestarr on Youtube because of this story. It really is a good show. I have always had a fondness for shows of that era. Not sure why.

Anyway, this story is coming along very nicely and I love how much detail you put into it. Not to mention that you are writing at an extraordinary pace; so far, you have put up a new chapter every few days. Quite a feat.

I wonder if the ponies will be able to handle Thirty-thirty's personality and love of fighting and if he can handle being in a world that at least seems mostly peaceful.

6351659
Thanks for the positive comments, and I'm glad I pushed at least one person to go back and watch that ridiculously awesome, rotoscoped-on-a-$5-budget show that didn't get the attention it deserved. Oh, check out Episode 26 ("The Price") if you want a pretty unique experience in children's cartoons. It's a doozy :fluttercry::pinkiegasp::raritycry:.

The writing pace I'm gonna have to fess up to though - it's actually editing pace at this point. I wrote part one of this story for my own personal amusement over the last year or so, so I only have to edit it a bit, mostly to make the formatting work (and rewrite some of the crappier bits I wrote an age ago). I'm pacing out about 6 more chapters I'm in the middle of editing, and there's a couple more I haven't finished polishing. Then (in-story, hopefully not out of it) the wheels really come off and part one ends.

dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/70602472/Progress.png

Once we hit the end of part one it's going to slow down while I actually write more :pinkiecrazy: Hopefully having a few people enjoying it will make me go faster :twilightblush: The plot outline's in place, I just need to write it and hope the characters don't derail it too much.

CCC

Ah! The communication problems start to get solved!

...and Thirty-Thirty should shortly realise that Fluttershy isn't even consciously doing that. This has all kinds of implications...

CCC

"fellow ponies". So the mystery voice at the end is an Equestrian one, not Stampede and his bunch...

I wonder how long Stampede et al will take to implement their Plan B? I wonder if they have a Plan B?

When will we see the next update? Loving it so far!

Thanks!

There are four unpublished chapters sat in the story being edited right now... but then again there were seven a few weeks ago :pinkiecrazy: I gave myself a huge buffer when I started posting the story, because I only write infrequently in my spare time, but it's still disappearing frighteningly fast. I just can't seem to let complete and edited chapters sit there for more than a few days before I post them, and it's starting to catch up to me :twilightoops:

I finalised the edits on the most recently posted chapters over the bank holiday weekend so I posted both at once, but I'm sorta-kinda going to have to space things out a little more now because we're approaching the end of the first part of the story. There's one or two more chapters to be turned from outlines into actual writing, in addition to the four awaiting edits - so I'll be spacing those four out while I edit them and finish the others.

Things are about to get significantly more chaotic for everypony (and non-pony) concerned. Stampede and the Carrion Bunch might have been frequent carriers of the Idiot Ball in the cartoon, but uh... let's just say I'm holding closer to the movie versions.

CCC

it wasn't as permanent as it had fist appeared

first appeared

Okay, so we've got a few antagonists here. Stampede and his crew are back on Bravestarr's side of the portal, and stuck there, Stampede personally being stuck in New Texas. While they may or may not have allies on the Equestrian side, they elected to try to turn Twilight instead of getting their allies to help out with the portal (and I'm guessing the only reason why Stampede hadn't gone through it already is that he's a lot bigger than Thirty-Thirty and couldn't fit).

Then there's a group of ponies, planning on taking one of the Bearers out of the way for an hour or so in an attempt to push their goal of "true Harmony", whatever they mean by that. They seem convinced that they could persuade the bearers to help them willingly (which is certainly interesting) but are more than ready to resort to violence if it will be more convenient for their goals.

Finally, there's the attackers who took out the carriage (and most of the accompanying guards), who may be affiliated with either or neither of the above groups but which have access to considerable firepower.

Shaman, meanwhile, has some means of communication with Celestia, though it appears to be a fairly slow and possibly noisy form of communication - BraveStarr and Thirty-Thirty would at least be able to pass simple messages back and forth, if Thirty-Thirty can get to Canterlot.

--------------

I can see two ways the story can go when the storm (and accompanying attackers) hit. Either these ambushers work with the True Harmony group - in which case Thirty-Thirty gets to see what magic can do in a fight, and the Bearers get to see what's so great about Sara Jane - or the ambushers and the True Harmony ponies are completely unrelated, in which case True Harmony might ambush the ambushers in order to prevent them from messing up True Harmony's nefarious plans...

6408150

Woohoo, first piece of detailed feedback! Now I get to be excited that someone cares enough to write this much about my story, and simultaneously terrified that someone cares enough to write this much about my story because I can now screw it up :applejackconfused: Not sure if I've ever been nervou-cited (nervacited? Nervicited? Damnit Pinkie, how the heck are you meant to spell that without it either looking terrible or ruining the spelling of 'nervous' :twilightangry2:) before, but this probably qualifies.

First, thanks for the spelling spot, fixed that one.

Second, a much bigger thank you for the next bit. It's really hard to divorce yourself from the knowledge you have as an author when proofreading, so the deductions and impressions of people who don't already know what's going on as they work through the plot are really helpful. Lets me figure out if I'm giving too much or too little information on things, and if I've left any giant plot holes by forgetting to foreshadow something (or given away something I was hoping to save as a surprise :trixieshiftleft:).

Now I just have to fight the temptation to explain what's actually happening right here, and do it through the story the way I'm supposed to instead.

It's really hard to divorce yourself from the knowledge you have as an author when proofreading

I know! I have a lot of trouble with that, too. In my story Paradox, there's a bit of a mystery around the nature of Paradox... and by the end of the Cutie Mark Crusaders chapter, I thought I'd left enough to work out the answer to that mystery. And then I made it even more obvious in the following chapter, I thought I was doing everything but saying it out loud...

...when I did say it explicitly in Paradox Explained it still took my readers by surprise.

So, in my experience, unless you say it quite clearly, you can't hint at something too much even if you try.

Oh, yeah! It's stompin' time!

(Stratus) "I AM FIRE! I AM DEATH..."
(30-30) "How cute..."
BOOOM!
"Meet mah' Sary' Jane, an' yer' under arrest!"

I hope Stratus enjoys his stay in the Canterlot Statue Garden. :trollestia:
Still if he was just the first wave with a freakin' Alicorn Amulet, it makes me wonder what else "Team Evil" is bringing with them to the table... :rainbowderp:

CCC

Okay, so there's not enough Arcanite in Equestria for a pegasus-type Alicorn Amulet. But there's already known to be another world involved here - Stampede et al could have pushed through enough Arcanite from New Texas to build a dozen Alicorn Amulets. And I imagine that between sending through some seriously distorted communications, and the power of the artifacts, he could have persuaded a few ponies that they had found "True Harmony" when it was really a set of Dark Magic artifacts... which would still leave the question of why he didn't use True Harmony to handle the Equestrian end of his portal instead of trying to convert Twilight.

CCC

On the one hand, yay, the cavalry's arrived! It's good to see Celestia being proactive about things. Though it would probably have been better to hear what Luna wanted to say, Luna should have time to say whatever-it-is now that they're here...

On the other hand, the "True Harmony" group have got hold of Rainbow Dash. That can't be good. With one of the Elements of Harmony out of the way, at least temporarily, they seem to have what they came for... and they may just be putting a corrupting Dark Magic pegasus artifact on her...

I liked the contrast between Luna's bright rooms and Celestia's dark rooms. One doesn't see that arrangement often in fanfic.

6456784

the cavalry's arrived

Guess what the extremely imaginative name of the next chapter is :derpytongue2:

I wasn't feeling very meta or full of references when I came up with that one, although there's still the lame pun double meaning to it - and Equestria is pretty much founded on cringeworthy horse puns. There's been at least a couple of separate references, both to in-chapter/story events or other stuff, in most of the other chapter titles though.

The light/dark dichotomy thing for Celestia and Luna is one of about fifteen different contradictory headcanons I've got rolling round my brain for the two of them. I need to get better at writing and/or come up with more story ideas so I can get some of the others out there - there's so little information about them that's actually canon that you can go in all sorts of fun directions.

Speaking of stuff with very little fixed canon... this is about where I start having to make up stuff for Thirty-Thirty as well. Despite being the secondary protagonist of a 64-episode cartoon and feature-length movie, and getting some significant screen time, there's a grand total of about 3 sentences regarding his nature or origins in the entire show canon. Even some of that is nonsensical or contradictory too. Hell, they never even confirm what proportion of him is biological, if any of him even is - in the toy line he's explicitly 100% robot, but the toy version looks almost nothing like his cartoon/movie persona and the show implies pretty heavily that he's almost entirely biological with a few augmentations.

Luna is pretty manic right now, for good reason. This story's version of her likes to try and divert attention from things she's uncomfortable about with humour... with varying degrees of both appropriateness and success. As much as I love mysterious, endearing, insecure and/or fun-loving versions of Luna, and her more recent canon appearances in season 5, I'm a fan of the slightly "moon-touched" (in the archaic 'origin-of-the-word-lunatic' sense) version too.

As for Rainbow... well, let's just say wandering off by herself and getting grabbed like that is going to cause some pretty big problems. Not just for her, but for everyone.

Why do my stories always end up making terrible things happen to my favourite ponies? There's probably a message in there somewhere.

CCC

6461185

I've read a couple of stories that suggest that the word "lunatic" was inspired by Luna, in the distant past...

Why do my stories always end up making terrible things happen to my favourite ponies?

Well, it makes for better stories than coddling them.

Well, that's the language barrier taken care of. Now, a bigger question: Where the Tartarus is Rainbow Dash?

The way 30-30 is acting, reminds me of the Mars horses of Perter Hamilton. Built for combat against insiduous overwealming opponants.

Still they haven discovered the loss of Dash yet. theres going to be self recrimination there.

Is it ever shown how 30-30 alters Sarah Janes settings, or is it a ,standard, smart link, through the cybernetics? As in the lever cock is a mechanical interface, preventing him using the gun remotely?

CCC

...so now Dash is still MIA, and both Princesses have stepped away from the field.

Moreover, the Dark portals appear to all have been Stampede - I'm guessing he'd trigger off a small portal, send a bit of dark magic through it, and shut it down immediately if one of the senior Princesses tried to close it; or drop a mind-warping Arcanite artifact through if somepony else turned up (he's probably got one with Twilight's name on it). With the aim of putting together enough of an Equestrian army to take down the Princesses before moving in himself and taking over.

The frozen pegasus should hopefully be able to provide useful information when he wakes up. I wonder whether that will be before or after Dash comes back? I'm guessing "before", because I expect it'll take a lot longer than a couple of hours for a Dark arcanite artifact to warp her mind...

Oh my, now that sounds like an interesting backstory for Thirty-Thirty indeed.

whelp that went well...really couldnt expect much more than that though.

Well, meet and greet hasnt lead to any more bodies needing to be dealt with, I wonder just how much kerium is in Sarah Jane relative to say a haulage truck or small spacecraft.

How long before Dash, one of the critical elements of last defence of the world is discovered missing.

Looks like Pinkie wont be unleashed here. You almost feel sorry for Tex and Stampede if she was.

Almost. :pinkiecrazy:

Productive (in a non-work kind of way) week off means two chapters done, yay! Hopefully everyone's still enjoying things.

Hoo, that was a lot to get through. Would have liked to push the time frame forward a bit, but there was a ton of stuff everyone was going to have to work through immediately once the language barrier was out of the way.

Couple of chapters to go 'til the end of part one now, so don't worry - Rainbow's going to be featuring again soon. Wonder what's gonna happen when somepony tries to give the Element of Loyalty divided loyalties, while simultaneously boosting her magical potential and amping up her aggression towards the out-group...

6526764
Canonically there's virtually no info on Thirty-Thirty, and even less on his gun, despite the amount of screen time he gets. I'm making most of this stuff up as I go, backfilling my own canon without stomping over too much of what little was in the cartoon. Based on its use in the show though, Sara Jane is a pretty normal (in-universe at least) energy weapon - it works like a regular firearm (it's a space-age version of a Winchester 30-30 lever action, which is where the character's name comes from), but it shoots red laser bolts that can have varying levels of lethality and doesn't need ammo. It's a lot more powerful than everything else around though (It's referred to as the most powerful hand-held positronic cannon this side of the galaxy in one episode, and in another he even mods it up to make it more powerful, but the attachment overloads and almost blows up a chunk of the planet). Like the show's other 'laser' guns, it's got the ability to do everything from blowing holes in walls (or, in Sara's case, destroying cliffs and whole buildings) to knocking someone across a room unharmed or just freezing them. They're also treated by the characters as if they're lethal (e.g. when threatened with them or in gun safety after-show messages), although nobody human ever dies or even gets badly hurt as a result of being shot.

CCC

Hah! New Texas is stuffed with Arcanite. Knew it!

Sarah Jane is a Sacred gun? With how everything else about New Texas works, not that different to think of mentality like 40k turning up. given the time of release of the animation and the board game, which came first though?

The longer they wait for Dash, the more time the evil has to work her over?

6618978 IIRC, Warhammer 40k was still gelling from Rogue Trader around when Bravestar would have been proposed as a show.
Stateside though, the hippy-dippy collegate writers and animators would have been playing Gammaworld in their freetime (post apocalypse RP), and it's immediate predecessor, set in a badly-damaged 'generation colony' spacecraft. I do remember reading some of it in a used bookstore. Working weapon tech from the "before time" was treated as Holy relics in those games.
(Hmm if WotC was more on the ball, they would collab with a certain game company to release a Fallout edition of Gammaworld...)

6623791

Gammaworld is Fun. The last time I remember playing that, I was a Praying Mantis blade master, who was terrified of blood. :pinkiecrazy:

6623791
6618978

I... totally hadn't considered that angle. Which is odd considering how much of both things I consumed around that time period.

BraveStarr and Rogue Trader (aka WH40K 1st edition) are contemporaries, both released in 1987. They do share a few themes I guess, especially given how 40k was a lot more hair metal and a lot less grimdark in those days.

Completely opposed when it comes to violence though - there's only a small number of canonical deaths in BraveStarr (and only one anybody remembers) and it was bound by extremely restrictive US cartoon legislation, while Rogue Trader was still, well, Warhammer 40,000.

I do have a head-canon reason Sara Jane is considered sacred (it's referred to that way in the show, but it's never explained why) that's tied into my completely made-up backstory for the rest of the Equestroids and Thirty himself, but I'm not sure that story is ever going to get told in any detail. A few bits might sneak through here and there, but Thirty's not going to be bringing it up voluntarily, and Luna certainly isn't going to be spilling any more of it without a really good reason. Guess it depends on what the characters decide to do when I'm not looking, they do have a habit of derailing things sometimes.

6625245
Ah, Thanks for correcting my timeline as I thought RT came out a little earlier than that. I try to keep my Gaming History correct.

CCC

Ooooh. Stampede's portals are clearly more advanced than I'd thought...

The villains error was grabbing the pony that holds the essence of the Element of LOYALTY.

All we can hope for, is that what happened to Dash on the Equestrian side of the portal, sets her up for a similar event with Stampede and the Marshall, in that her power is unusable by evil?

Trouble is, Tirek absorbed it.

Oh well, Strength Of The Bear.

Marshall sure aint Shy bout usin that. :yay:

6681696
Tirek absorbed Dash's pegasus magic, not her essence, she harnessed the Rainbow Power along side her friends even though he took her magic. Stamped is trying to take Dash's essence and twist it, to use it against her. Tirek can steal energy but not the fundamental essence of a pony's identity, and it looks like Stamped can't take it either since he tried to change who Dash was loyal too not make her treacherous.

Woo, and that's the end of the first part. All done for Christmas. Maybe if you've all been extra good this year Santa will be bringing the start of part two.

I made a blog post to collect some feedback/answer questions/have characters answer questions/whatever you like seeing as this is sort of a plot milestone, to see if I can try and gauge how things are going. So, you know, if people who have comments and stuff (or who want to ask super awkward questions) could maybe post things there that would be cool. Or don't, if you don't want to. But it would be nice. No pressure though, only if you don't mind :fluttercry:.

6681358
Heh, now I'm curious as to how you think the portals work. There's been juuuuust about enough information given away now that someone could potentially figure out what's up with them, but that would rely on picking the one correct explanation out of a whole raft of possible ones (and the critical bits of wording/factoids from across the story) so of course it only seems obvious from my end :ajsmug: The weirdness with the portals is one of the main reasons the gang are still in the fight at all, even if they haven't figured it out yet - although now people from both ends are talking, they'll probably figure it out in short order.
