They are capturing then for magic to infuse their weapons and shields. This is evidenced by the shields description, which states that it is NOW resistant to magical assault, showing that this is something that it couldn't do before. They seem to be wanting to take revenge of nightmare moon, so as shown in the canter lot battle, magic seems to be their biggest weakness. Could this be a foreshadowing of something darker indeed?
So did they find out about ponyville being separated from night mare moon via the survallence drones?

7266740 They are weak towards magic, but not quite for the reasons you might think. Pure magical energy is almost completely ineffective against them - if you remember how Ebony struggled to lift the Wisp Knight's armor when the Fracture over Canterlot first opened up and how Nightmare Moon could only 'trip' a fleeing knight in the first Rouge Knight invasion - but not heat, cold, light manipulation, and kinetic force, which magic can be transformed into. It is this 'on the spot adaptability' which confounds the knights.
