Twilight smiled at the three little fillies. "Don't worry. You're going to be amazing. Remember, just stick to what you know best." She leaned down to Sweetie Belle. "I can't wait to hear you sing."
She rolled her eyes. "Why does everyone think I'm gonna sing?"
Scootaloo jumped in. "Actually, Twilight Sparkle, I'm the main singer tonight."
Twilight stepped back. "Oh?"
"And I'm the main dancer!" Apple Bloom attempted a karate chop. "Hi-ya!"
Twilight took another step back. "Oh?"
"And I'm in charge of..."
"Costumes?" Twilight finished Sweetie Belle's thought.
"And sets and props, how'd you know?"
Twilight covered her face with a hoof. "Okay, that's enough. Sweetie Belle, your talent is singing; Scootaloo, your talent is doing stunts; Apple Bloom, your talent is fixing and beautifying things." She took a deep breath. "There. It's settled."
The three fillies watched, dumbfounded, as Twilight left.
Scootaloo sat back down in the box. "Oh."

They will end up underpowered because they have not been tested. Fluttershy never had to confront the cockatrice and stare it down. Fluttershy never had to deal with the dragon. Key confidence building and hero building moments have been lost.
Make things too easy and then when a REAL challenge comes up, you find yourself wanting.
5091611 I'm assuming that the idea is that they're already so much overpowered (in terms of their friendships and abilities) and cannot possibly grow any further. Like max-level characters with top-level gear and years of experience entering an RGP-game.

Well, it would be for the purposes of the show... but as for life in general, I thought 'stunts' were more accurate.
5091696 well... Lately I've been playing some Diablo 3 and I find myself losing interest when the game gets too easy to the point that I have to quit, raise the difficulty and restart. Lack of challenge makes it boring.
Although I did like coming back to lower-level regions in World of Warcraft after maxing my character, to get revenge on all the mobs that had the gall to kill me (that was 4-5 years ago when you could sometimes actually die while leveling).

Yes. This needs more upvotes. This is what people are not understanding. If it was like folks are saying, how they'll all be underpowered... being 1-2 levels above something isn't overpowered. Overpowered is being so much stronger than the conflict that it could hardly be said to have slowed you down at all. A real challenge -won't- show up, or you would cease to be overpowered and would then be at equivalency again.
... I find this chapter, displeasing.
But Apple Bloom already has her pigeonholing but tattoo.

5091611 Maybe it's a cyclical thing. Twilight is overpowered because she was tested more as a filly because the last generation was underpowered because they were never tested as foals because the generation before that was overpowered etc.

Okay... that's fine I guess... Um... Next episode! Dog and Pony Show... Rarity defends herself from being abducted and continues collecting gems with Spike. Oh! Or Twilight warns Rarity and Spike about the presence of Diamond Dogs so they don't go looking for gems in that particular area... or all the mane six go gem hunting so that there is strength in numbers... If I thought Spike would get to be OP he would rescue Rares himself using fire and get a reward kiss.

I always thought the three knew it all along, but had their own reasons for wanting something else: Sweetie Belle wanted to be like Rarity instead or was too shy to be a singer, Applebloom would much rather do other things besides repair as a talent, etc.
