A village of ponies that mutated with spiders as part of the balefire radiation are forced to leave when the village is overrun by hellhounds. One spider pony named Gardenia, after experiencing a tragedy after leaving, finds a friend in the former Unity alicorn who saved her.

Long before the Lightbringer and not so long after balefire rained from on high, the Goddess and Unity are weak. Every day threatens the fledgling alicorn race's survival. When a mysterious note promising power beyond compare falls into their grasp, the Unity jumps at the opportunity, even if they have no idea what this "Pyre" could be. These answers lie deep in the dark continent and the shell of the Zebra Empire.

When disaster strikes the small expedition, only one sister remains, alone and isolated from Unity by means she can't understand. If she is to survive and see her family again, she must adapt to the Wilderness, but that adaptation may remake her in every way.

As time passes, a growing fear nags at her. Will she even want to go back?

The land is harsh, and friends are few. Only one other question plagues her: just what is the Pyre?

Assuming that it is even real...
