Looking for Some Fic Recommendations · 4:24pm Nov 24th, 2012
I first entered the fanfiction community as a reader rather than a writer. Reading was the main reason I signed up for FiMFic in the first place. Then I wrote a couple of fics-that-shant-be-named, got a voice in my head that told me I was a "good" writer, and before I knew it, I was getting a hit after hit (though I think that one of said hits should have never been published—let alone reach the featured box—but I digress). Since then, I've kind of ventured away from the reading aspect of fanfiction. However, I've found myself reading more and more fics recently, and have found myself wanting to read more.
So, I'm going to turn to my watchers once again to help me out. What are some "must-read" fics out there?
I'm mainly looking for good Adventure, Dark, and/or Shipping fics, but anything you deem good will do (except for 2nd-person fics and Brony-in-Equestria stories. Those will be promptly ignored).

Well, there's Happy Adventuring Twilight, it's a romance and adventure, Mare-Do-Well: Regeneration, it's dark and though it doesn't have the tag it's still adventure-ish and then Discordant an adventure and Harmonics, the sequel to Discordant, also adventure. And if you want something darker try You're all alone, sweetheart, a pretty dark and interesting tale. That's about all I can think of. Hope I helped!

Gotta admit, the premise of that one doesn't actually seem like my kinda fic, but at the same time, neither did The Immortal Game, and that's one of my favorite fics in this fandom, so I've kinda learned not to judge a story on its premise alone.

Yeah, when I got into it I was like HiE eeeehhhhh, but I stayed because I was promised Applied and Theoretical Physics...but I stayed because it's a fun story. Not my favorite, but definitely a solid like. Just don't let the pacing get to you, it's a slow story (that's only half done, maybe less) but all the plot points have been slowly resolved or are in the process of being resolved. Also, the 500+k words take place over like 3 weeks or something, it's actually a surprisingly short time for something so long.

534177 Blue Angel is pretty good, I'd rank it towards the top of the HiE stories that I have read.
The Flight of the Alicorn is my favorite story in the entire fandom if you are looking for an excellent adventure story. That's the one I would recommend if I had to shorten my list down to just single story.

A Changeling Named Sin but you probably saw that already.
The Changeling Queen: The Changing of Rainbow Dash Twidash with a twist, I'll warn you, it has a bit of gore and sex.
First Times Mild allusions to sex, but it explores the darker, more morally ambiguous potentials. Personally, if you're looking for a work that shows that sex isn't a magical fix-everything rod, this is perfect.
I would recommend one of my fics, as it is a dark romance, but I'm rewriting it to expand the rushed ending I gave it before. If I remember I'll PM you the link once I finish the rewrite.

534177 If you've never read it, look up Of Mares and Magic (I believe it's called). It's a Twixie fic where Trixie challenges Twilight to a Magical Duel, then leaves to train so she can try once more to reclaim her title of Great and Powerful. The ending uses a pretty lame Deus Ex Machina so they finally admit their love for each other, but other than that, a freaking awesome fic.
I'd suggest fics written by my friends, but I won't link. I'm not big on self-advertising, and since I've helped on their fics, it'd feel like stroking my own ego to advert them.

Elder Scrolls: Equestria. Told in third person present tense, this story is as fun to edit as it is to read. And I'm not being sarcastic, it's pretty fun to see how we can change Elder Scrolls to fit Equestria. Main cast (so far): Caro, an Earthwalker, Tohro, a Pegasus, and Shae, a Unicorn. Caro and Tohro have yet to meet Shae in the story, but that's coming soon.
Synopsis: Caro is sentenced to death for destroying an entire town. When the leader of the Blackwings decides to intervene, his life and his destiny are called into question, as he leaves behind the forge and smithy he calls home to change the very fate of Equestria.

A bit of fair warning, this fic is filled with numerous OCs, only three of which do we plan to actually have relations with any of the Mane 6, possibly three, though the fourth hasn't been introduced yet. And while that sounds like a lot, we've got one OC for each Zodiac sign, and about 20-30 other OCs (Thankfully, we'll never have that many all talking at once... right?
), and maybe a cameo or two.
Remorse is a fic I enjoy working on, but be warned: The chapters have been staying around 8k words, excluding the first chapter which we're currently trying to redo because it's just not up to par with our current work.
Well, there's all the self-adverting I can do in a day.

erm....ok first of all i think that gif is making my computer lag like crazy, my words appear a second after i type them.... second, there was once a seeing the pattern 3: stopping destiny, I read the first two, and was saving no 3 for a later read... but it seems he scrapped most of it, and has somewhat hidden the story now.... I hate it when people delete stories...(or move them to a different place)

There is a disgusting lack of Quantum Castaways in this thread. It's one of the best and most stand-out adventure fics I've seen yet. So go read it.
Anything by Cloudy Skies is also a must-read, though you probably already know that.
I could throw out a massive series of fics. So I think I shall. I'll skirt around famous ones because there's a higher chance you've read them. Also, focusing on incomplete(Sunflower is complete but he's working on a sequel) because that way you can keep reading for a while.
Project Sunflower- Human in Equestria, it falls prey to a handful of the terrible things every HiE does, but is on the whole good, and is not Brony in Equestria. It alternates between slice of life and adventure, but the adventure is, on the whole, stronger.
Friendship is optimal- this is a really quite amazing fic, and that's all I have to say on the matter.
Game of Worlds- An interesting sequel to The Empty Room, which if you haven't read go read it right now, ignore every other suggestion and read that one. An interesting Adventure fic about a game that shapes the world of Equestria.
Rights of Ascension- A twilicorn fic where Twilight becoming an Alicorn is, in fact, as big a deal as she thinks it is. No calming down comes from Tia, and the adventure is off to a wonderful start. It does a marvelous job of working with the canon, and a better job of expanding on it.
What is a Name?- not adventure/dark/ship, but good enough to require mentioning- The sadfic is about Pinkie after an as-yet-unexplained accident removes all her memories from after some time before she saw the Rainboom. Philosophical and sad, this story is worth reading.
Hopefully one of those will catch your attention!
