State of the Horizon, Feb. 2019 · 2:39am Feb 26th, 2019

Hey! You know that thing you've been waiting for me to finish? I have exciting news!

… For 50% of you, anyway.

And I HATE having to say that! I feel horrible letting down readers. :fluttershysad: It's the worst. But at this point, I've got a big enough project backlog that working on literally anything will still result in disappointing the majority of my fans because Their Favorite Project remains untouched. It's crippling. It makes me want to hide in a hole and not work on anything at all.

But that's not what I've been doing. A few months back, I started making a point of regularly heading to local coffee shops with my laptop — and the rule is, while I'm there, I write. It helps a lot, because if I want to goof off, I head home and do it without the need to buy caffeine and sit in public. As such, while I've been as silent here as ever, I've written something like 30,000 words so far this year — which is TREMENDOUS output for me.

And more importantly … it's been progress on that backlog!

So let's run down the ol' project list, both the not-yet-successes and the successes:

Back When Tigers Used To Smoke

No recent progress. I'm sorry! There was a tremendous outpouring of interest, but I underestimated the amount of editing work, and both Aragón and I got dunked on by RL. I'm hoping to pick it up this spring.

Hard Reset 2

No recent progress, but it is definitely not dead. There are two chapters completed after the current stopping point and a third mostly done. I was blocking on them for QUITE a while, and in late December put in some revision that fixed a longstanding problem and cleared away the block. But I want to build up a bit of a buffer before I start posting again — both so I don't prematurely get hopes up with new content, and so I can get a whole arc done at a time rather than writing myself into a corner mid-stream.

It's my big "finish before the show ends" project. And it’s priority #1 after this next thing comes together:

The Bronycon Bookstore short-story collection

You remember that reader poll last month? You remember how I asked whether all-new material would get people more hyped for the book?

Well, about half of you said yes. And I can now announce that that will be the case!

DEVIL MAY CARE
14,400 words
[Adventure] [Equestria Girls]
Discord, Principal Celestia, Vice-Principal Luna, Sunset Shimmer

Sucked through the portal to the human high-school world while Twilight Sparkle is overseas on vacation?  Just another day for Discord.

But when a burst of reverse memory convinces him to destroy the world — and the power of Harmony seems to be taking his side — it'll take the full wit, courage, and magic of Celestia and Luna to save the day.

... No, not the Princesses.  That would have been easy.

The best part? Although rather different in protagonist and focus, this is explicitly a sequel to Administrative Angel (hence the title). Those of you who loved my deconstruction of Humanlestia and her sister will get a chance to see them in action. Those of you who hate-loved my shifting between past and present tense will get to hate-love me flipping between present and future. :trollestia: And I promise you that you've never seen a Discord quite like this before.

It's already gone through a Writeoff spin cycle — as "Destroying Pedestria: yrotS evoL A", taking a silver medal — and a significant expansion. Prereaders have enjoyed it. I think you will too.

GET HYPE!

Oh, and speaking of hype:

Time Enough For Love

… just crossed the 25,000-word mark last night.

OH HELL YEAH. YOU KNOW I'M NOT GONNA MAKE AN "EXCITING NEWS" POST AND THEN LEAVE YOU HANGING. Not while I can stand a little closer and harvest all that sweet, sweet anticipation, anyway.

What's happened to make it triple in size? Luna. Star Swirl. Cookie and Pansy. And a trip around the world. The original 8k story, as acclaimed as it was, always felt like a Cliff's Notes version of Clover and Celestia's tale; this fleshes out both their romance and the world around it.

Mister Smashy will ride, my friends. Before Bronycon, he will ride. This is the story that will make you want to buy the book. And I am doing my damndest to make it worth the wait.

Yea! Time Enough For Love is coming! Woot!

Nice! I'm glad the Smoking Tigers project is (might be) picking up again. I was really into it and rather disappointed when all the hype died off and everyone stopped posting.

YES
I AM EXCITED

A sequel to AA? That at least conceptually appears comedic... very much yes, AA left me hungry for more.

Exciting! :pinkiehappy:

Woo-hoo! :pinkiehappy:

You know, when I last actively thought about writing another bit of My Harshwhinnial, I really wanted to start it out with someone saying "Well that sure didn't work." As a little nod to a favorite story of mine, and a poke to get the lead out. But who am I to throw THAT stone?

Honestly, any word on it at all is A++ in my book. I mean I look forward to new stuff from you anyway, but Hard Reset 2 has a special place in my heart.

sees anything related to HR2 updates

dances like an idiot white girl with no groove

YEEAAAAHHHH BABY.

Sequel to Administrative Angel....
HELL YEAH! WHO'S EXCITED?! I'M EXCITED!

Also when you finish HR2 I'm definitely gonna throw everything aside and read the crap out of it.

Hard Reset 2, woooooo!

Hard Reset 2 isn't dead?

Oh man, I have to reread the whole thing then. I've forgotten everything.

Administrative Angel sequel and Hard Reset 2? Hyype!

I need to start reading horsewords again. There's so many to catch up on.

Oh wow! This is definitely a fantastic update!

Will these anthology exclusive stories ever be published here? Especially for the people who can’t make the con?

And a trip around the world.

that contest is still going on? :raritywink:

I, um, didn't do my Tigers project work. Guilty.

100% yes. I’m going to use the Patreon-bonus type of model: “get the book and you get some stories early” rather than locking out people who can’t attend.

The AA sequel actually happened?! TEFL expanded 3x?!! HR2 the #1 priority after that so I get to break my brain all over again!!!!!

I can feel the hype in the air tonight! Oh Luna!

5020310
Excellent! Either way, I look forward to them.

MISTER SMASHY RIDES AGAIN :trollestia:

Hype has been gotten! :pinkiehappy:

I can seriously relate to a small project exploding in the best possible way. I’m attempting to wrap up a 30k story that started life as a 2.5k written-in-an-hour short…
