A welcome breather of a chapter, after the hectic action of the previous ones – especially as it's likely a final breath before pushing toward the last leg of the journey in the second part. I'm eager to see the exciting pay-offs of all the little set-ups peppered throughout, of course, but it's also to be commended that, despite being only a 'part 1', this here chapter still works fine on its own, with clear themes and character beats. So great job, as always!
Such a smart idea to have them walking back this path, a wonderful and so heavily thematic bookend echoing back to the dreams from the very start of the story... Simply masterful. And delightful to cap it with Giggle at the Ghostly! There's a certain poetic flair that this little piece of the show, this little glimpse of Harmony expressed through Laughter during this one long night thirty years prior, preserved against all odds from Discord's oblivion by Twilight then brought back to life by human creatives, can now help the traumatized, kinda-resurrected ponies push through their fears and keep on fighting to bring an end to their tormentor's chaos...
Of course I'm so very tempted to comment on this surprise saddlebag discovery and all it entails, but I'll wait 'til next time. After all I should get back to writing, right..?
Oh this chapter ask so many questions and i have a feeling the answers are going to be scary.

You did a fantastic job so early on XD

Oh no, not just early on, right?? Lol.
But yeah, thank you!

Actually I haven’t read past chapter 2 yet, don’t worry XD

According to the BBC, Canada announced it would temporarily legalize "possession of small amounts of illegal drugs" in British Columbia.
More than 2,000 people in the province were reportedly killed for drug overdose last year, and the time-limited (three-year trial) legal overhaul was the first in Canada. Adults will be allowed to hold opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA in total of no more than 2.5 grams.

I'm glad to hear it sounds like prioritizing sellers over those who are hooked on the things because they have a seller.

The reason for the legalization of marijuana in Canada is that the circulation of marijuana in the Canadian black market is very rampant. Before legalization in 2016, it was not illegal to use it personally, but it was illegal to sell it.
The annual cost of the Canadian government to ban marijuana is higher than the total amount of transactions in the black market, and because of the annual treasury deficit caused by the Conservative Party Harper’s series of operations, the Liberal Party began to promote the legalization of marijuana after taking office. The purpose is to hope The government will officially take over the entire cannabis industry chain, thereby reducing the cost of banning cannabis and increasing national treasury revenue.
However, the effect of the legalization of marijuana is that the black market is more rampant. The official marijuana price is much higher than the private marijuana price, so more than 85% of marijuana transactions are still carried out in the black market.
The Canadian flag's maple leaf can now be changed to a marijuana leaf.

Is it legal to use psychotropic drugs in your state?
About 663,000 people were arrested by U.S. police for marijuana in 2018.
In February 2021, Oregon became the first state in the United States to decriminalize the possession of "hard drugs" such as heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine. People possess less than 1 gram of heroin or ecstasy and less than 2 grams of cocaine or methamphetamine. etc. will no longer be considered a crime and will be replaced with a $100 fine or a health assessment.
On April 1, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 220 in favor to 204 against legislation to legalize marijuana nationwide and remove long-standing criminal penalties for possessing or distributing marijuana.
Strong support for the American people in defending the right to smoke marijuana.

Not to my knowledge, no. It was quite a big deal a few years ago that our state allows marijuana with a medical card for specific conditions. One with a card can buy from a dispensary or grow their own. Any actual hard drugs? No. As for the story, there's not a ton of drug talk in this story, but more than the average I suppose. It's mostly incidental like with the benzos here. Mostly we're focused on Berry's worst addiction.
There were 52,000 drug-related deaths in the United States in 2015, nearly 72,000 drug-related deaths in the United States in 2019, and approximately 104,000 Americans died from drug use between September 2020 and September 2021.
A study recently published in the medical journal The Lancet estimated that 1.2 million people in the United States could die from drug overdose in the next 10 years.
Forbes magazine reported that legal marijuana sales in the U.S. reached a record $17.5 billion in 2020, a 46% surge from 2019.
The proliferation of drugs has brought about a series of social problems, such as family crisis, violent crime, increased intergenerational poverty, increased racial discrimination, psychological trauma of children, etc.
Of course, these social problems are not important, because the United States is a country of immigrants, and it is not afraid of how many people die, and there are a steady stream of people sneaking in from Mexico.
I don't know if you are in a high-end community or a slum street. What I am more worried about is whether you will be able to update normally in the next few years?
Whew! Started reading this weeks ago, but between family stuff and Covid terribleness it took until now to finish it. I find it fitting that the Journey to hell begins after you've already been through hell and in desperate need of a nap you can't take ;P
Pinchy is quite the little magical protégé, she's done Book Horse levels of magic at that age, not to mention her talent to rapidly generate a counter spell for chaos magic.
Careful, the last time a pone finish such a complex spell they became an Alicorn.I also love your understanding of what keeps your characters going and how Berry can recognize this. Being pushed to the limit, and knowing what that feels like to know just is enough to keep them all moving. All the oof from Berry's internal little dialogue about how much she needs to continue, how much it means to her and all she's done for everyone else and then just *not* having the energy needed. Ouch, that is just all the feels.
Tartarus. There is a lot of little beasties in there, Tirek if I remember my lore right especially. Finding all sorts of demonic evils in there, but the bigger question is which ones could be of use or just more trouble, not to mention fitting within the lore of all the other books.
Also I wonder if walking over their pseudo-graves giaes them shivers.
11336920 I completely agree. Admittedly I think a suicidal person is more inclined to hate themselves than just pity themselves, but I don't think a person cries in self-hatred, they rage and hurt themselves and others. Or at least, I did. Most of my cries meanwhile have a tinge of self-pity or stress to them and if there's anything consistent about this story it's about how there's an embarrassing amount of myself in this story.
First an emotional katabasis with the ponynappers, and now starting a literal katabasis here? Man, you sure love putting these ponies through the wringer, don't ya?
