What an amazing chapter! The whole getting to the portal and once there, oh my gosh, I had my heart in my throat – all the emotions, then the tension, it's so powerful! I think it's one of my favorite moments of your story yet.
I thought your handling of Nathan was perfect, you definitely made the right call. And as for what happened on the other side, so bittersweet... Now for the final stretch of hardships!
(Oh, and I always had that 'ponies don't smoke' bit from Last Crusade in my head when I was reading about Berry and Comet smoking, so it's really fun to now see it for real! XD )
and now the battle begins.
cute marks are earned.
and pony's die in the fight for freedom.
this is a awesome story.
It's such a strange type of nostalgia to have read so many fics that position themselves at the front of the action. Critical and essential roles, ensuring that their main characters are pivotal members and leaders of the great rally and fight. To have a point of view as one of the hundreds of ponies that were just as noble and deserving of valor as the traditional "heroes" of so many other stories. Seeing Berry saying goodbye to her other human friends (with a complex dynamic of their own!) having so much more impact because despite everything she has gone through, not being some Powerful Alicorn or Soldier she and all her friends are willing to lay their lives on the line. It's quite a powerful moment in a chapter others would likely dismiss as "setup." I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this story is such a love letter to the whole 5/score world as a whole and its just amazing.
Can we just take a moment and appreciate Chad? With all the shit he's been put through, he still chooses to help in any way he can, just out of care for the people he loves! Absolutely lives up to his name!

Chad and Nathan both grew on me as I wrote this. I like to think how all the characters seemed to have had an arc, even if we were only intimately following Berry's.
