I've taken a slightly different approach than he, I believe. In mine, can Rainbow figure out exactly what's going on? Can she protect her friends- and, possibly more importantly, when/how does she plan to reveal her identity to them, if ever?

Not all of them... I mean, Prime Delivery was pretty unique. But yeah, most of them share a common headcanon at the very least. This one's based on an abandoned story by another author as well, but it still uses my normal headcanon.
... it is the only one to really have much detail on the dark magic side of things, though. I developed a lot of my headcanon on that end with this story, and I like some of the implications, so you can bet I'll use it again sometime, somewhere.

It depends- I'm putting the shadow magic as extremely effective in combat... yet it's already been noted that any shadow magic- including combat stuff- is useless against Rainbow. So obviously, there is a variance to ponies' resistance to it, just most of 'em are pretty low.
