Please, PLEASE for the Love of Luna don’t let this Mare be a religious Zealot!
So, it's cool that he's trying to get an industrial revolution moving without using fossil fuels, but does he know how to make a dynamo? And batteries? Or how to explain their construction? Because I'd hope that the concept of "water mill" would already have been known to them, but there's quite a few steps between basic mechanical work and the creation and storage of electric charge, and if he doesn't have those ready to go then he's being really premature about this.
Oh my word, so this how the title and cover art come into play. I thought it was a metaphor for the 'innovations' he was bringing to Equestria.

The last two chapters were about him making and demonstrating a crude AC motor, so I'm sure he's quite capable of making a hydroelectric generator and explaining the principles its operation. He'll just have to take quite few steps to scale the crude model up, with assistance I'm sure Celestia will grant.

He's got a smartphone with books and reference materials, if I remember correctly.
It's basically "Isekai with my smartphone", but with ponies.
I think the important part of explaining electricity is that he REALLY needs to have a teaching session with Celestia herself, and explain the atomic model. At least to the point where he can point out what electricity IS in terms of the flow of electrons.

Read the last chapter and chapter before that, and little reminder he apparently has schematics on his phone so he always has a good reference to go off.

Which I honestly ignore for the sake of the story, cause seriously what sane person keeps some random schematics on thier phone in an age where everything is one search away, like seriously these are some very specific things that he kept on his phone for reasons?
And there's the whole always magically fully charged without overcharging/overheating or straight frying the thing, like is there constant 5v1amp in the air or something.
Not to mention if his phone ever brakes he's ducked.

A dynamo is an inverse motor. The complication is the calibration to ensure the voltage, amps, current type (DC or AC) and current frequency/phase. Batteries are more complicated, however lemons and potatoes can act as batteries with only two carbon rods.
Good thing he didnt try to describe Drax. A wood burning baseline power station that literally pumps out a continous bolt of mega lightning.
Best I can think of for 5 volts, is that its 2 lead acid cells in series, with a protecting, dropping silicon rectifier. Or 6 volts RMS equivalent going through diode drop rectification.
Better to work on Universal motors, forgot which varient of DC ones that because of self switching polarities, doesnt matter if the supply is DC or AC?
If he wanted to demonstrate solid state lighting, Galena with point contact is not just for radio, but is a Very inefficient LED, solar PV junction.

I replied to that post directly.
Too bad Celestia was not Cadance, otherwise she would ship Water and Ian on a whim.

Perhaps not. Equestria is blessed with various different species of sapients... we are all alone in the dark. They are used to the other whereas we are not.
10111060
You imply this isn't the case.
Water seemed really shaken by Ian's origins.
Does Ian have any insecurities of his own he'll share with her? She might find some comfort if she learns he's scared of stuff, too.
How smug. Well, forewarned is forearmed, right? It’s easy when you’ve got someone telling you where all the pitfalls are. Or is it? I once read an article that Nikola Tesla wrote for a magazine in 1911 (if I recall right) in which he called the burning of fossil fuels “a crime against future generations”. Obviously the world didn’t heed him then. Incidentally, in the article he summarized the alternatives and settled on geothermal as the most promising.
And that brings to mind something else. According to the producers of the show (as per comments in The Art of Equestria), its technology level is supposed to be roughly 1900-1910. A few times we saw specific items that seemed more advanced, like 1940s style superhero comic books or the 1950s style movie projector with color and sound, but those were only used when they were needed to advance a story or, sometimes, to make a joke work. This seems to imply that if our protagonist accomplishes everything he has planned, he could push Equestria ahead of where we know it should be when FiM begins.

I think Celestia is focusing on the wrong things, to be honest. The technology isn't the danger, the ideas are. The European monarchies weren't brought down by the invention of the steam engine, but by the ideas of philosophers. I quote V in saying "..ideas are bulletproof."

In this case they know of things that went wrong and can hopefully avoid them. Now some problems might not crop up because they knew how to avoid it but some might pop up because someone was stupid or greedy. That does cause a lot of trouble for our world.
