This is shaping into quite the tail. I can’t wait for the next chapter.
One nitpick, unless those seords are secretly made of another material that looks like steel but is way heavier, swords are really a lot lighter tban you expect, not the other way round. If he picked up what I'm assuming to be a shortsword, it would be around 1.5-2 kilograms, or around 3-4.5 pounds. Additionally, a swords's center of balance is very close to where you hold it, so it feels lighter when you move it than a bar of the same length and weight would. Swords are specifically designed to require as little effort to use as possible, so that their user would not tire. This was one of many advantages that made them often preferable to weapons such as maces, axes, and spears.

A shortsword is what he ended up with, as opposed to the first, larger, device.
The main difference between a 5lb half an half sword, and a 20 pound prybar, is that in towns with weapons controls, one looks like trouble, and the other looks like a staff or walking stick.
Wouldnt Water Lily be good at crossing eivers and lake? At least she would remember the caulking?

i'd want the prybar more oomph behind the hit!

Was the first sword two handed or one handed? A two handed sword, like the typical longsword, is only about 50% heavier than a shortsword, but is held with both hands, making it feel lighter than trying to use a shortsword one handed. This was a part of the longsword's popularity - it was a weapon that was very light, had a lot of reach, and took very little force to swing. A typical longsword is only around 3-5 kilos, at the heaviest.
Fuck, I forget who they're talking about, and can't find the name in the previous chapters.

Actually, in late medeival times, the sword was seen as a self defense weapon. It's light, easy to carry, quick to draw, easy to use, and isn't all that effective against actually equipped soldiers or knights. It's like frontiersmen and rifles - a utility weapon for self defense and hunting, not a sign that they're looking for trouble.

You seem to be stuck on human scaling. If the first one was meant to be used by an earth pony, it will be too heavy.

Sorry, too used to debating on human stuff. I'm a derp sometimes.
"Don't use my name, it will not defend you. Here, have one of my personal maids who serves me directly."
....
Eh?

Castle maids are not super popular. Saying 'I'm with Celestia' would have a strong response.
8790640
And I suppose she didn't even consider the risk of someone recognizing her personal maid, whom Celestia would trust more than the average citizen, and even some soldiers?
Nothing says, "I'm with Celestia" as much as her personal maid wandering with the person in question as they go into territory famous for not liking Celestia.
I can relent that maybe they won't recognize her, but its not impossible, to glance over the risk without a mention is one hell of an oversight on the characters parts.
And so kindness joins the group >.>
I have to ask. Is Water Lily going to turn out to be Lyra's ancestor or something?
8791339
She is a unicorn from Canterlot, so... maybe?
I'm loving this story so far, keep up the good work!

They'll still feel cumbersome to somebody who's never held a sword in their life before.
Even a wooden quarterstaff will feel unwieldy the first time. If it's anything like my own experience, Ian will get used to the motion within mere days of practicing with his sword.
If it were an axe, on the other hand... You're right about those.

Depends on the type of sword and the construction. Display, ceremonial, and practice blades often are much heavier than necessary. Depending on the style, whether it's a thrust, cut, or balanced cut & thrust, the number and depth of the fullers, the existance and degree of distill taper, if it's curved, straight, leaf-bladed, the material for the handle and guard, the size of the guard, the metal used, these all greatly vary the weight of a blade. Something like a Devil's Edge xiphos weighs in at only one pound seven ounces for a 19 inch long leaf blade with a wood handle, and even most Khopeshes, which are made of bronze that is heavier than steel, weigh less than two pounds. My water bottle is heavier than that when it's full.
8793033
That is pretty light.
Consider myself educated, then.
8795816
However, you would be correct on the weight if we're talking most curved or cut focused blades, as their center of weight is shifted towards the blade for better chopping, thus making them feel heavier, luke the difference between holding a hammer by the head and holding it by the end of the handle. For other one handed swords that are heavy for other reasons, you have something like the wakazashi, a blade that's heavy for its length because of blade construction. Traditional Japanese swords are much thicker than their contemporaries because of the mixed quality steel they were first made of, making display or practise japanese blades heavier than normal, even considering that display and practice pieces typically are heavier than functional models. There's also the prevalent myth that European swords were blunt and heavy, and broke bones better thnan they cut flesh. So, you've got exceptions to the typical, light weight of a one handed sword, display and practise models that throw off people who haven't held the more rare and expensive functional pieces, and a bit of popular misinformation clouding the issue.
Edit: I need to break my outdated weaponry addiction. Why am I like this.

Out of... How many maids in the castle? And the only people who WOULD be aware of her occupation as a maid at all would be... defected nobles? Guards? Besides her erotic fixation on the human and forwardness brought by it, Water Lily doesn't seem all that social at all, so she's unlikely to be known outside the castle. All in all, the risk of bringing her is negligible. She might become a burden at some point, but she's not directly harmful to the team effort. She's a quality of life asset. Good things get better. Bad things get less bad. Terrible things... Well, if it really comes to that, she's expendable.
Although who knows what Celestia was thinking when assinging her. I have no idea.

Assuming any one of the people they meet is or was a noble themselves, I promise you one of their abilities would be to remember faces.
Its one of the things nobles in olden times spent most of their brain doing, remembering faces, connections, and lineage. They might not know immediately, that would be weird, but they would definitely find her familiar.
I think I know who Water Lily's descendant will be. It's totally Lyra. That whole line will be obsessed with human hands, starting with one who followed Ian into danger because he has hands that are good at petting!
(Of course, I say that, but realistically, everypony in the modern day is likely a descendant of just about everypony in Equestria 50-100 years after Luna was banished who was able to have a bloodline that survives to the present day. Just like how every European or person of European descent today is descended from just about every European who was able to have kids back in the 800s-900s).

Welcome to the story! You've been reading avidly.

Historical record fixed.
Swords are actually pretty light. Greatswords were among the heaviest and they weigh up to around 2.5kg
9234646
Spoken like someone who has never held a sword with weak arms. Upper body strength is a must even for lighter swords.
9234646
Yeah but it's all dead weight and heft. sure you can easily lift the thing, but swing it around or use it like an extension of your arm? Nope. especially considering this protag is a total nerd
Give that boi a pike, bitches love pikes.
And they're super effective and easy to use after all. Just big.
Swords are wasted on the untrained. A good club or spear on the other hand, anyone can use with minimal practice.
