she doesn't seem all that into the idea of locking away "his" ideas, the knowledge of nukes might change that though

agreed Celestia fails to understand what, she is asking for the fastest way to make her understand is to teach her to fear it and in doing so she could come to respect it from what i can see Celestia failed to respect the true horror, power and usefulness of Sciences Show her Pandora's box teach her to fear and respect Science. story's are not enough show her its glory and horror, beauty and death.
A good way to get her to agree is indeed leaving the keys in her hoofs. Let's hope she can resist the temptation to burn it into the ground when confronted with the nightmares knowledge can create.
Celestia missed the point. If Ian thought they (ponies) are not worthy of his knowledge, all he could easily do was not mention it at all. He already promised he would record his knowledge, but the leader of ponies such as her should be the one to decide which one should be shared to the public - not him.
Please don't tell me Celestia has never locked up dangerous knowledge from public eyes so far.

1. Bribing your way to victory is just corruption and that's not unique too patenting
2. Patenting is first come first severed. If your too slow it's your own failing.
We build statues and roads, and yet not just dislike but hate even the idea of attribution only.
Companies have it as standard in their contracts, you come up with anything while you work for them, that idea is Theirs, all rights. Depending on the company, a really good idea will get you fired and sued into suicide, to make sure noone can even attempt to fight it on your behalf.
Other companies will accept you have an idea, and then delay, knowing that you, being destitute relatively, cannot afford to start production or even pay the second filing payment. So the price offered drops. Eventually they pick it up for a fraction, then place in the portfolio to use for trading with other companies. Thereby setting the price of what patents are worth, without having to spend anything, and showing a far better bottom line for the trade. Rinse and repeat.
I forgot if its the Linux network stack or crypto core or something critical for the operation of the Linux idea in general, the running of the internet backbone, at least only a year or two ago, was the work and responsibility of just One person, who because it was Open Source, wasnt employed or payed by any company for his work.
How would a license tax work in a similar way? Every item sold has a licence percent tax, that goes through the License office, which then are audited to see that the money is paid to the patentees? But then, Flim and Flam could be making money both ways, unless Standards Authority was enforced? So how would selling things at large markup from a table be handled, lifestyle tax? You have to show that you are spending all the bits you are taking in to show you are not making the equivalent lifestyle profit to be taxed? Trading money between equivalent worths are little cost and so do not count against the profit? How would you apply Neightons Flux in intertrade cost analysis and taxation anyway?
Short Sight introduces the Trie search system, and that is why, through a misspoken announcement, why Ponyvilles Golden Oaks becomes a library?
As for the forbidden wing, how about the names and employment records of the Black Clerks?
FIRE!

Locked, of course. Celestial Control Spell, which allows unicorns to move sun and moon. It was a major plot point in 20th chapters.
I kind of feel like he is implying that he can teach them to make what, guns? Nukes? Clopfics?!
In all seriousness, how the F would he know how to make either guns or nukes? That's a hell of a jump from creating a sewer system.
10318953
is it though? all a gun is, is a pipe, a sewer is a pipe.
10318953
You think handing over Wikipedia to a primitive _but eager to learn_ society wouldn't result in dramatic changes?
10319296
Point taken.
10319079
I'm not an expert on gun making (though I do own one) but even I know there's more to guns than just a 'pipe', you have to make sure the ammo can travel through said 'pipe' without getting stuck or blowing up in your face. Certain guns take certain ammo you can't just slap 556 or 762 into a revolver that takes 38 special and expect it to fire . there's also springs, the trigger, trigger safety, hammer, firing pin etc. that all need regular upkeep to make sure the weapon continues to work.
10319408
I'm no gun expert either however you're talking about advance guns, I'm talking more flintlock rifles or even the gun that proceeded it, while a LOT less accurate all you need is a stock a sturdy barrel and a simple firing mechanism. Gunpowder is stupid easy to make, no joke look it up. Now you need steel or lead balls as ammo. That's not a very hard list and that's not even accounting magic, which in this story might make the process even easier.
this was a duplicate comment so i'm going to change it
Fantastic chapter
10319408
I mean, the theory behind a nuclear weapon is very easy.
It's getting the right materials and the enrichment process (first successfully done by the UK) that is where the difficulty is.
AKA
Turning theory into practical application
10319827
Completely true, but there are a lot of dangerous ideas in that phone.
10319915
Little things can ruin the unprepared.
The agrarian revolution alone overturned the British society...
Chapter 1
Why he called Celestia "queen", if he knows she's going by the "princess" title?
10318953
He could teach them the fundamentals of how they work and that is all they would need. It would be a long way off before the ponies would have the technology to build a nuclear weapon however primitive firearms and explosives would not be hard to make. I hate to think of the political instability that would be wrought if Ian taught them this.
If the radiance of a thousand suns
Were to burst at once into the sky
That would be like the splendour of the Mighty One...
I am become Death,
The shatterer of worlds.
Aaaaand I don't get it. Inventors stay on the shoulders of giants, previous inventors. So what's the point to not drop all his library to the patent library? Ponies will learn to swim in this sea of informations, and eventually they will stand on the shoulders of this library and make their own addition to it.

You don't tax, you negotiate. If someone wants to use your patent, they have to negotiate a deal. Maybe you want a a flat fee. Maybe you want a percentage. Maybe It's a combination or something else entirely. There's no need for the government to decide what is fair, they just have to enforce whatever deal is made. They could have a filing fee for the contract, though, to make sure There's a permanent record.
