Nice chapter.
'Plumber' comes from the ancient Roman word for lead; 'plumbum.' The Romans made all their water pipes out of Lead.
They're all dead now.
The first water pipes were chunks of hollowed out wood. think pencils without the writing bit, and were hammered together like the spigot in a barrel of mead. They leaked badly, rotted, easily damaged, had lots of shot sections etc.
The big advancement was use of hammered lead sheet, latin Plumbum (Pb) rolled up into tubes at a horseshoe bent round till its edges closed, then overlaped and folded then hammered tightly shut, like the rim on a storage tin can. Lead can be used if a coating is added that wont corrode or break, although I have seen tinned copper pans, I have yet to hear of any attempts, sucessful or otherwise with tinned lead pipes.
The big advancement with copper pipes, was the creation of massivesly strong cast iron and steel presses that could squeeze a solid block of copper metal so hard that it would steadily squirt out of a hole, like a wire die, but with at first a centre piece in place like a lance from the front of the die, limiting the length of pipe produced each time to the length of the lance, and the speed by how long it took to remove the lance, until material technology improved to the point where the lance could be buried inside the machine, being so strong that the solid copper metal flowed around it and reformed a continous tube as it exited the machine.
With strong enough materials, its possible to make continous steel pipe. Using pressures that make steel flow like wax. Think of Dragons and lava baths. Thats why Dragons would need Tungsten machines and Pure Alumina/Sapphire Pipework, as its a lot cheaper than all Tungsten unless a really good supply of the material is available.
Im Just wondering who is going to build the generators at Ponyvlle Dam, given thats a big res to supply only Ponyville, and Canterlot has all the water it needs at pressure?
Another way of using lead, is one of its ores, Lead Oxide, which is toxic, but when melted can be used to produce extremely tough glass, Pyrex. Lead oxide, Borax, not sure of the full chemistry but would be intresting if silica was avoided by using Alumina etc?
Copper pipes with Tin coating, can be melted down to form Brass fittings?

Not just lead, but the also used things like: Wood, Leather, Terracotta, Stone and Clay!
10214576
Leather? huh. weird.
10214682
Yeah, leather doesn’t suffer bleed through and can to a degree prevent evaporation and freezing. It’s why, for a long time, they were used as bladders for holding water during travels or for military’s.

It is also the source of the terms "plumb line" and "plumb bob"- a plumb line being a weighted line to make sure vertical lines are straight, and a plumb bob being the actual weight at the end, usually made of lead in olden times.
Many inventors do not have common sense when it comes to finance - and eccentric ones rarely thought of their own salary.

If only they had used something different for their pipes, they might still be alive today. :(
I'm sure Water Lily would like Ian to 'slap naked flesh against naked flesh' too.
10215877
I feel like it would take more than better water pipes to prolong their lives this long.

Maybe with that attitude.

I still have lead pipes in my house.

Certain stuff has to be added to the water so the lead pipes don't rust. Unfortunately for the Roman's (and the people of flint) they didn't have that.
