Great chapter, really loved the Princess Bride reference too!
Love this chapter! Ossius reminds me a lot of the Hannibal Lecter portrayed in the Hannibal TV series.
"secured the Expresswith chains"
"secured the Express with chains"?
"shedding massive scales the salt that thudded down in the"
"shedding massive scales of salt that thudded down in the"?
"The skeletons, worm, and legionnaires pushed"
"The skeletons, worms, and legionnaires pushed"?
"your friends. Hatshepsut too. I knew I simply couldn’t"
"your friends. Asheput too. I knew I simply couldn’t"?
"Don’t worry. I won’t let you die die. Not till the General orders it,” she said with a smirk, then reached into her rags and pulled out a vial full of tarry syrup. “Don’t worry. I won’t let you die, die. A shot of this will keep anyone alive for a little while. You’ll still be breathing till the General orders you dead."
Was that supposed to be stated twice?
"That was likely the mistake."
"That was likely a mistake."?
"Scotch stared at it silently for a moment, then muttered softly, “Oh, crap.”"
...Yep. Good assessment!
"Also, sorry this took so very long. I've been dealing with a lot of depression and anxiety lately and should have had it up weeks ago. Sorry about everything."
Ah, sorry, Somber; apology accepted, and good luck with the headspace stuff. I enjoyed the chapter, too. :)
"But good news! I should be making it to EFNW this year, since I'm moving to that area. Hope to see folks then!"
Ah, nice! Enjoy!
I have no expectation of being there, though, I'm afraid.
we talking bout THE black book here? O.o
would imagine it could potentially come back from a balefire blast though would imagine it would take..... a while longer.
8893686
Different one. Just as nasty though.
My morning was going quite terribly until I saw the notification email about this.
<3 you Somber. Please don't take this the 'creepy fan' way.
Now, on to actually reading it...
Great work! I know this takes long to make but it’s worth the wait everytime. I hope you finish it dispite season 5.
Well, this sure beats raiders and slavers
Really smart, Scotch Tape, you learned a thing or two of Blackjack and co, I’m sure they all would be proud of you and you can be proud of yourself, trying to help anypony in need
8893733
hmmm. hope it is different in many ways. maybe not weaker but different..... maybe weaker >_>.
i could imagine someone attempting to replicate the book for themselves if they ever had their hands on it. fears of it being stolen or destroyed. maybe the book wanting another like it in the world in case of that very thing.
Well worth the wait. Good to see you're okay.
Scotch not thanking Justice seemed a bit... Off.
I like how things are a littleore clearer. But,it seems it's going to take more effort if Scotch has to try and get the 13 tribes to a table and try to restore order. I bet that's what Riptide is trying to avoid, a reunification of sorts. One could say the tribes bickering and warring is the Blinded eye of the world and restoring unity to the tribes might be the only way to unblind it.
But maybe I'm reading too much into this.
I'll be; I was just thinking about this story, noticing it hadn't updated in a while. Even flipped open project horizons on a whim.
do I have powers?
Anyway. Something to read for later.
This was an awesome chapter to read, and makes me wander what Sotch is going to do with the book
Hype! Can't wait to read this,
8893917
I think it’s a separate book like one of a set of black books covering different things
Great chapter. It's funny this got updated now. I just got my into FO:E recently. We were actually talking about PH cause she came across some blog talking about the "Somber effect." We both agree it's bs and that PH is awesome.
8894156
To be fair, from her perspective justice tried to kill the leader guy.
I'm still hoping that each chapter is when Pythia finally tells Scotch her feelings.
I'm a shipper, don't sue me
Are we gearing up for a Mad Max chase...?
Oh, fuck me.
If only someone here knew plumbing!
Oh for the love of--
Leave it to zebras to write the Necronomicon into a twelve-volume set.
Huh... so this legion is kind of... communist?
Odd... so the Caesar got forewarning, but only a tiny bit. And he thought he'd be able to return from... where?
This order almost seems calculated to produce as much discord as possible. Was this a false order? The Shadow Legion already at work? Was the Caesar perhaps already dead when the megaspell hit?
...uh. Is Scotch going to be running the Bone Legion in a few years?
Hmmmm. I wonder whether the binding-ness of the command is predicated on it being a valid command, or them believing it's valid. If it was falsified, would the spirits know that? Or would they continue to enforce it until the general got proof that it was false?
Hmmm... trying to remain at the bottom of the heap, beneath notice? I can see how quality-of-life improvements would be bad in that case.
WOAH. I think I see why some refuse to join any legion. They might kill me for it, but at least I'll die as myself.
Yup. Sheesh.
I wonder if his birth name was Orpheus instead of Ossesus.
Considering the other generals we've seen, I think the fact that it balanced for even a moment speaks highly of him.
Well, that's a thing. And not even the same as his original mark. Did he just get a capital-D Destiny?
Zebras have a really weird way of thinking about life. Like, it's ruinous and a curse to no longer be forced to do something terrible? Stability is more valuable than morality? I get that Osseus was working to restrain the worse impulses of the legion, but still. I continue to wonder if that's the strength of ponies -- without contact with the spirits, they worry less about How Things Are and don't fear to look toward How Things Could Be. Which can be either a good thing or bad thing, but it makes them a force for change and disruption... which is the only way life advances.
I wonder if, in D&D terms, zebras would be considered Always Lawful, to the point that they could use a dose of chaos every now and then, whether they like it or not.
Oh, crap.
8908219
It's slightly different. A curse is effectively a 'May you live in interesting times.' And while those interesting times may not be ultimately bad, they're generally disagreeable as a rule, for the curse and for the people cursed by them. When the spirits notice you, they also notice the people interacting with you, and Scotch has got a giant neon 'notice me' sign over her head for spirits.
The bone legion is extremely lawful, as is the Iron Legion, which is Lawful Evil. The Storm Legion is Chaotic Neutral, and the Blood Legion is Chaotic evil. (Seriously, the Iron Legion and Red Eye would get along splendedly!) The closest thing you get to a 'good legion' is the Whites and Greens, who would be (barely) lawful good and neutral good. But as to the Empire, all empires are lawful. Unlawful empires have another name: decline.
Oh that ain't good
8908523
That wasn't really what I meant. From what I've seen, adhering to tradition and the status quo, even when it's clearly harmful, seems to be a fundamental part of zebra culture at the same kind of level as "don't eat things off the ground" is to ours. Like, they acknowledge that they're doing something really shitty, then proceed to do it anyway because that's How Things Are Done.
Compare that to, say, modern American culture, where we like to think of ourselves as Generally Good People, so acknowledging our cultural wrongdoing makes us very uncomfortable. There's a sense that such wrongs need to either be addressed or justified so that they're not actually wrong.
Oh crap!
When you read translated chapter earlier than the original one
Ah! I have reached the now! Now I guess I have to break my Fo:E exception to my bookshelf system, so I can keep updated. Hmm.
I like this one. Less action than Horizons means it's not quite as "big", but I'd go as far as to say the worldbuilding is even more intriguing. I love this big spirit mystery, and I'm still waiting for the Scotchlord ship to pay off!
I don't know what the current editor situation is, but there's a lot of work there left to be done: consistent punctuation errors, larger perspective and clarity issues, and occasionally matters of narrative order and pacing. Unfortunately, I'm no longer free to edit without being paid, or else I'd volunteer . Ah, the drawbacks of making a career out of a hobby!
Bah, what the heck. If you want me as a prereader and one-pass proofreader for future chapters, I'd be happy to take a look!
(Btw, I'm still not convinced that Charity wasn't an earth pony in Horizons.)
Great chapter. Thanks for writing. I hope you feel better.
its*
is he ever going to finish this?
I am just a little annoyed at myself that I didn't even realise this chapter was up TWO months ago until I got the saus for chapter 19!
It was neat to see zombo Tatzlwurms
I'm visualising WH40 000 laser cannons
I wonder if that consumes a lot of oxygen or if it doesn't because it's magical fire.
I really liked how Scotch's specialty was the resource that gave her a way to figure out how to avoid disaster, and Ossius' reactions and rationale for it was all just as believable. That mark of generalship (and membership of the legion in general) though is definitely worrying when they were supposed to be about Justice. I really liked the way that the Bone Legion's history made their current location and situation and mentality all make sense. It was a good thing that the Legion's spirit.. thing was Justice; I would imagine Scotch would have had to come up with more convincing words to get other legions' spirits to help her out. It feels slightly arbitrary that Scotch can switch her vision so intuitively, and it's unfortunate that there really doesn't seem to be a less awkward way for an equine form to hold something in each hoof and walk at the same time (Justice's sword and scales) excepting telekinesis, but the way that the Justice avatar(?) looked down at her at once, and the fact that it had that smile at the end was definitely awesome.
Should this be scour?
'What would that dark magic have done to her?' ? 'What would've that dark magic done to her?' ?
Should this say Ossius' bed?
Missing quotation before 'The' ?
Maybe the most boring?
missing space
root-like?
The wording seems to suggest that somepony else was supposed to be mentioned at the controls
8969369
We would have to at least wait to see what happens in Roam before we start getting antsy!
8969369
Hahahahaha.
Have you seen how long Project Horizons is?
This ride ain't ending for a loooooooong time.
9004384
Could still stand to have more updates. it been almost 4 months cents the last update, is he okay, or is it something else?
9005180
I just finished it this weekend. It'll be on my patreon for a few days, then I'll upload it here.
9005255
sweeet
9005255
Huzzah!
*waits patiently for story update*
Wow, FINALLY sat down to read this chapter Is it too late for the "settlement requires help" joke? ;p
Highly entertaining as always
I kinda feel like it was Shadow who started the Legions fighting. So long as they worked together, Shadow couldn't do what they did best, subvert, replace, and lie. They're zebra-shaped changelings, from what we've seen.
And then the Dread Outcast Ossius retired to live like a king in Patagonia.
First of all, thank you FIMfic, and your shitty notification system, for not letting me know that this chapter was updated BACK IN FUCKING APRIL and only letting me know now once chapter 19 was added. *siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*...
Good to see positive change come about, even after what looked like a real "oh shit" moment. How fortunate that after the Bone Legion rounded up that settlement, they ended up with the combined resources of a farmer's expertise, an engineer's expertise, viable growing land, decent water, seeds, and materials to begin a farming settlement.
That book is bad news, though. It's bad enough that such a thing already made its way to Equestria, but a similar book existing in the Zebra lands, and possibly others? Not good. And it's following her, somehow.
I wonder if this is the last we'll see of Ossius. My gut is saying "no".
I ship Skylord and Precious so fucking hard. They need to bang. And they need to make the babies. And the babies will be.... Pretty fucking ugly, but they'll still be pretty fucking awesome!
Whew goddamn! You're back! After what feels like forever... it's good to see another update to this, and holy fucknuggets... shit got real in this chapter, though it is Homelands so when does it not get real? Hahaha
I say to you good job on this chapter and hope you're doing better Also damn, I wish I could go to EFNW, but alas, I can't afford it right now, perhaps next year.
Good work once more Somber!
thank you a lot for your great stories, they keepp distracting me during episodes of depressions and anxiety.
8908523
nice to use the d&d alignment.
what would black jack's alignement be? chaotic good? neutral good?
9137667
Blackjack? Neutral good with chaotic tendencies. Scotch is Neutral Good with lawful tendencies.
9138804
thanks for those insights. it perfectly explains why bj and scotch are so similar in certain ways but yet very different... especially concidering scotch's constant denial towards the dealer when it comes to him comparing her to bj and her apparent fear of becoming or being too much like bj
This was an epic chapter, Somber. Great work. I like the definition of the Legions you've created. Very cool.
Love you too, Sandy
My oh my, how did that get there?
I'm sure somebody will be missing that little gem~
Loved the chapter. I was half expecting some bad shit to go down, especially after Scotch's little walk.
The only MAJOR flaw with this chapter that I find is the face melting scene. In the context of Ossius being a long time killer it makes sense. But he just killed a defenseless mare she was a rat and a bad leader, but still even after a major show of overwelming force. I've no doubt that if Scotch hadn't worked to change things he would have 'liquidated' the settlers.
If the Enervation was only brought up for shock value and not built on later, then there really wouldn't be much point to it.
I guess what I'm saying is that deaths shouldn't ONLY affect our protagonists. There should be some sort of long term connotations from his action. The only positive thing that came of it is Xora? Being a stronger/ more cooperative leader. But she still at the mercy of the General.
9138804
I kind of feel like Blackjack started out more on the Lawful side, and moved Chaotic as time went on.
Truly the more impressive reason to tow them along.
Is the spice flowing?
*brahmin
*loose. Also, yeah she would.
I don't know, but I suspect that whatever star touched her just convinced Ossious to agree to her terms.
Yeah, because she's going to make it that far with spirit induced asthma.
You're going to eat those words, Lieutenant.
Is she supposed to be repeating herself?
Jim Butcher taught me to be worried about guys named Octavius.
No no, the correct line is, "I'll most likely kill you in the morning."
I'm going to assume that nozebra ever came up with the whole "duty to disobey an unlawful order" bit the US military has.
Missing a period.
True, but everyone needs to have a hobby.
Hmm. Calling it now, Scotch was touched by Equus itself to come unblind it, and the Shaman of Caesar/New Empire is allied with a star to stop her.
I feel like that was the wrong thing to say.
I wonder if Scotch's curse would stick to her animated skeleton.
I don't think it's going to be any healthier with her gone.
It's just a little light reading.
I've heard that line before somewhere. "Good night, I'll probably kill you tomorrow." It's something someone said every night to someone else but i can't remember what the circumstances were or who the characters were.
