Oh wow an update and a great chapter
It's okay, better late than never, loved it! Keep zp the good work!
This kinda makes me wonder, is person actually a word in Equestria? Seen them mostly use pony in fics, but person, little to no use at all
10646798
Person was used in the original Fallout: Equestria to mean anyone not a pony but still sentient. So gryphons, zebras, and eventually Hellhounds
10646849
okay, i just never saw it before
Hey! You hit the front page! :D
10646864
For 15 minutes. :D
I'm sorry, did you say that this was PART ONE?! Of THREE??!!
On the one hand (hoof?), I'm thrilled to hear that there's so much more of your wonderful writing to come! On the other...
...I was so sure that we were getting near the end of this epic! How much more suffering can you possibly inflict on these poor kids?!
*rereads Horizons* ... oh. that much.
10646962
Still awesome :D
Congratz!
Always worth the wait. Thanks for the hard work putting these out, but your stories are so good.
Today was a good day to wear my Blackjack t-shirt! :D
10646962
You're an amazing writer, you know that? Like are you aware of how frigging good you are? You are frigging good. Like holy shit you are good, damn son
What a perfect way to spend a lunch break. Really digging the hostility and description of Roam. Once all this finishes up in the future, it's going to take it's place alongside my copies of FOE and PH on my bookshelf.
epic as usual. nothing else can be requested. you continue to bring fantasy to life. thank you.
Rome in in Homelands s not a good vacation spot.
10646975
PH makes Homelands look like an episode of FiM. So far nobody in the group has been raped or is responsible for the death of a filly or lost any body parts or is currently dying of cancer.* Worst thing that happened was Scotch lungs getting damaged, but all things considered this group is still in a much better shape after several months in Zebrica than Team Blackjack was after a week in Hoofington.
*Haven't read Chapter 24 yet. So maybe some of these things mentioned just happened in this chapter. Which would be a strange coincidence.
10647894
that's deliberate. I'm trying not to repeat Horizons.
Reminds me of a literary quote. I think I know the source, but I'm not sure.
"Hello, Devil. Welcome to Hell."
Inherit the wind, maybe? been too long since high school.
Such a raw line and a perfect summation of the tragedy of 99.
Sure enough, the circumference of Earth is 40,075 km, so there's confirmation Equus is the same size as Earth, or at least really close.
Decapentahexahepta, huh? All I can get from that is 10567, a postal code in Westchester County, New York. I'm probably digging way too deep into this, but who knows, could be important.
Scotch... that's all she ever fucking did.
God, I love this story, but Somber, don't push yourself too hard ya hear? In times like these, updating Homelands shouldn't be at the tippy top of your to-do list.
Awesome new chapter! And only part 1 of 3!? Looking forward to the rest.
A previous commenter got me wondering if we'll see the blood plague/Raider disease again?
10648156
Maybe there will be a reference to it, but I doubt it’s going to play a part in the story.
Then again there’s the Blood Legion who has a lot of manpower but not much else. Perfectly okay with throwing troops at the enemy until they run out of bullets because they have reserves. I think it’s even mentioned that they practice cannibalism because they don’t have enough food to feed all their troops. Of course, that’s what Skylord said and he’s Iron aka their enemy. So, this could be him trying to portray them as worse than they are.
Still the Blood Legion sounds like a breeding ground for the raider diseases. And being a bloodthirsty maniac who charges at the enemy without fear or self-preservation instinct probably make you a model soldier in the Blood Legion.
10648229
I guarantee you, Blood Legion absolutely know about that disease.
10648458
I 'm just as confused as Scorch about this and for long time:
Putting single goal ahead of self to reach, how that's not removing other choices? But it is a choice, a foolhardy one sometimes.
As of 2020 in many ways that year didn't happen. Aside from some bright moments. Was glad to "see" you, Piper and others on the virtual con, even that's not a person but avatar.
I might have looked too quiet, sad or unapproachable, but watching peple having fun and doing at least something so noone would sour that - that's a "happy place" for me. Keeping a vigil.
Another great chapter, Somber, and I can't wait to read more.
"in a morass of the whole world was trudging besides them"
"in a morass of the whole world that was trudging beside them"?
"What’s does the Flame Legion"
"What does the Flame Legion"?
"near a I understand Shamanology, is"
"near as I understand Shamanology, is"?
"Charity sniffed with a triumphant business model. Charity "
Was that supposed to say "business model" there?
"stared from one the next"
"stared from one to the next"?
"When you get the tribute drop off"
"When you get to the tribute drop off"?
"Did things like that actually fly? It seemed impossible! Where were the storm clouds to keep it aloft?"
Hm. How does this fit with "Outside the market was a strange flying machine she’d never seen before. It seemed rather like a Raptor without the clouds, but smaller, shorter, and rounder. It possessed a number of propellers that she guessed lifted it like Xara’s little gun bots. Without gems for talismans, she guessed it was little surprise zebras would have non-magical means for flight." from back in Chapter 15? Am I forgetting or missing something?
"take you to your leader"
"take me to your leader"?
"On the far size, burning"
"On the far side, burning"?
"but I know a lot of mess up things did"
"but I know a lot of messed up things did"?
"a thoughtful pull in the cigarette"
"a thoughtful pull on the cigarette"?
Thank you for writing, Somber, and thank you, editors!
10648458
Hope you don't mind me asking but how does the Blood Legion deals with this? Do they take precautions to prevent the disease from spreading? Do they simply kill anyone showing symptomes? Do they not care because 95% of the lower ranks - disease or not - don't last long anyways and in the meantime you have some fearless cannon fodder eager to kill? Or are large numbers of them already infected and the Blood Legion is basically what Daisy would've done if Blackjack hadn't stopped her?
10649360
Nope. If they can't take a city, they starve them out and then chop up some infected, smoke em, and let the 'rations' get captured and wait a month. By then, the defenders are usually HAPPY to surrender.
And with that, a new ship was born. The S.S. Hexity. Sail her true, lads.
Am I the only comparing the Flame Legion to Fire Force and the whole "fighting fire with fire"?
The chapter may takes some times to came out but it's always a pure joy to read it. Continue like this Somber and may Scotch storie be in our heart forever.
Alas, Roam. I like this already!
This is absolutely METAL, AND I LOVE IT, GOOD GOING SOMBER

Sorry , I know I’m a horrible person.
I feel your pain Somber. A story always seems to be shorter in one’s head than on paper and realizing it’s going to take way longer than intended to finish it is never fun. But rest assure I’ll attempt to stick around till the end. Your stories always do a great job at making the world and the characters in it feel alive and I’m eagerly looking forward to what else you have in story for us.
I share that sentiment.
The cat people from the movie made it into the story. Honestly never liked the design of most of the movie species. Still, nice to have them make a cameo.
Sounds charming. Place must be popular with tourists.
I figured the Legions wouldn’t waste time raising their own children to be soldiers. Just conscript villagers and promote the ones still alive after a few battles.
Makes sense. She spent most of her childhood in a Stable seeing the same 500 faces every day. And Hoofington was a big city empty city with a few settlements scattered among the ruins. Seeing an actual huge city like Rice Rive must’ve been a real culture shock.
Makes it hard to believe that Equestria was able to fight a whole continent and not getting immediately crushed by vastly more numerous Zebras soldiers. Especially since the Zebra weren’t that far behind technologically.
50/50 chance that this is a trap.
A Zebra who’s sick of Zebra culture. That’s surprisingly refreshing. There are a lot of likeable Zebras, but as a culture they are horribly flawed.
This whole “We totally won the war, we swear!” attitude really annoys me. I know that it’s a nation-wide copying mechanism that helps them deal with the shittiness of living in the post apocalypse but still.
Not to mention them striktly enforcing their tribal identities and if you don’t act like you’re supposed to do, you’re an outcast. Unless you happened to be part of the Starkatteri. Because then you’re everyone’s scapegoat if something goes wrong.
Say what you want about Pre-War Equestria, but at least they didn’t told an Earth Pony that he couldn’t be a scientist because Earth Ponies are supposed to be farmers.
Somepony getting jealous? That’s cute.
That’s probably the worst thing you could say.
Fun fact: Leg shoots can be as lethal as shoots in the chest or head. Hit the wrong spot and the target bleeds out in seconds. Of course, Skylord is the type of Griffon who doesn’t know or care about that.
That made me chuckle! Now matter what continent, species or tribe… parents will be parents.
So Logos are useful if you want to build an effective settlement in no-time, but the worst people to invite to a party. Got it!
Everyone in his family tries to hock him up. It’s great! I’m surprise she’s okay with him marring a Starkatteri. I guess by now they at least a little bit desperate.
That was actually extremely helpful. And extremely unexpected. I assumed this would be a question Scotch would never get answered until the end of her journey. But then it was causally revealed to her by a random Liberian in a ordinary village. Kind of anti-climactic.
Then again, to me the journey itself was always far more interesting than the destination. Especially since the main quest is pretty vague.
Part of me starts to wonder if Somber is just pulling our legs. Maybe the Eye of the World is still in Roam and we’re quickly approaching the final of the story? Maybe he’s just pretending that the story is far from over, while in reality it would over in under 500 k words?
Then again, we haven’t met all tribes/legions yet and still have no clear idea of the New Empire’s goal. So probably not.
I’ve got the feeling the really awesome story will be the one of her adventures with the Green Menace.
I would be freaked out by this, too. No wonder he wants to go as far as away from this place as possible.
I love this family so much!
Sounds like the start of a great Fanfic. Maybe if Charity survives this ordeal she actual does that. If Speak is canon to this story and Hexan still wants to go the Equestria .Mayor Charity could set up a very profitable casino in Hoofingon.
God call! She already has enough trauma to last a whole life.
Imagine being a Flame Legionary having to deal with this hellhole your whole life .And then suddenly six crazy foreigners show up and eagerly tell you that they want to go into Roam.
Then again Scotch survived everything Hoofington threw at her. That basically makes her an expert in surviving cities turned into hellholes.
Is supposed sex is also a possibility. She has a thing for mercenary assholes, so you might be exactly her type.
Okay, I think we just discovered the one place on the whole planet that might be worse than Hoofington.
I wonder what these burning corpses are. Could spirits or some nasty new type of Ghoul?
We’re entering horror movie territory here with monster that can poses bodies and turn them into undead fire monsters. Defiantly spirits or something spirit related.
If what he says is true, then they’re actually the only legion besides the Greens who aren’t making things worse for everyzebra. In fact, by preventing this from spreading to the rest of the continent they are actively preventing things from getting worse.
So, the guys who look like scar collectors and burn others alive as punishment may actually be the most heroic and selfless legion. How ironic.
So my current ranking going from not-so-bad to horrible would be: Flame > Green > Bone after Scotch > Bone before Scotch > Gold > Storm > Iron > Frost (not sure if that was their name) > getting ripped apart by ghouls while still being alive > Blood. No verdict on Shadow yet, because we don't know anything about them.
Does she have to go in there? I mean the Eye of the World is probably somewhere else. At least try to look for clues at other places before venturing into that hellhole. A lot of bad stuff that happened in PH could’ve been avoided if the group hadn’t walked into obviously dangerous places and instead looked for another solution.
50% bad decisions (“We know that a whole bunch of ponies went to the upper floor of the hospital and never came back. And there’s Play written in blood all over the walls. Let’s investigate future.”)
50% bad luck (They ALWAYS picked the worst place to seek shelter.)
That’s exactly what Blackjack would’ve said.
The more I learn about them, the more I admire the Fire Legion. They really are the closest thing to a “good” Legion who still tries to do what they are supposed to do.
That’s actually something I’m really curious about. Home is a minor but recurring theme of the story. It's even in the title.
The reason Scotch decided to accompany Pythia and Majina on their journey was because Hoofington didn’t feel like home. So I hope she will eventually find a place she can call home during this journey.
Carefully. I’ve heard Chris Redfield maybe around here somewhere.
Phew and here I thought Scotch have to do something impossible.
Handing over a balefire bomb to a Legion, no matter how well-intended they seem to be, screams bad idea. They know they can’t just use it to blow up Roam, so they need it for something else. Maybe to keep the other legions off their back. Maybe for something more sinister. Maybe Flare is even working with the New Empire. Sadly, there’s doesn’t seem to be another way for Scotch except agreeing to his demands.
Flare, you are one smart bastard! You know that the Green Menace - who has supposedly done impossible things before - is probably your best bet at getting your hoofs on a Balefire bomb. And being the one who got your Legion a Balefire bomb, probably gives you an instant promotion. Assuming there’s no hidden agenda in play.
I think Majina should stay behind, too. Sure, she tries to be thought which is admirable, but Roam is a hellhole. Only group members who are absolutely necessary or have experiences in life or death situation should be there.
Okay Roam is horrible. Good job at making this place an absolute hellhole no one would enter without a good reason. I’m actually surprised none of the unnamed conscripts died yet. Says a lot about the Flame Legions experience with this place.
All in all this was a great chapter! Looking forward to all the horrible things that are going to happen to the group.
My prediction is that they’re going to learn what exactly caused Roam to be such a hellhole and possible even put the restless spirits to rest. May sound like an impossible task but Littlepip destroyed the Cloud Cover and Blackjack turned Hoofington in a place where ponies can actually have a decent live. So, everything is possible in a Fallout: Equestria story.
Maybe Scotch even finds a way to not give the Flame Legion a Balefire Bomb and still gets out of Roam.
Finally, I’ve been wondering about the whereabouts of a certain rock. I don’t think Rocky has been mentioned once during this chapter which strikes me as odd. It is still with the group, right? Shouldn’t there have been at least a mention about whether or not Scotch took him with her when she went into Roam?
So happy to see a new chapter.

>Me seeing a new homelands chapter
I am currently reading Fallout Equestria:Murky Number Seven and it feels ao refreshing having to read something positive. All the constant suffering and worry is absent in here. Homelands is an interesting book, it doesn't have much in common with the fallout part except for beeing in the same universe and Scotch beeing from a stable. And even with that she does't use her pipbuck. This is far from fallout in general and far from what PH was in terms of approach? Not saying I don't like it, on the contrary actually. This feels like a lighthearted and goofy adventure story, at least compared to PH, which it shoudn't be, because it's totally different.
Eye of the World new location: Shadowbolt Tower
I know you aren't going to repeat that, but it seems oddly simmilar.
If I ever make an OC, it might be a Logos, just my cup of tea. I will repeat myself: with all that I love here the most favourite of them all are the tribes, that in this book get the proper attention they deserve.
Fallout Equestria: Remains spoiler:
Roam is like canterlot, just the most absurd of enemies and enviroment.
Roam is so cool, instead of beeing just a city we see another interesting megaspell at work. And what work it is, damn. I guess we'll be seeing Scotch jumping into a pool of lava to have a conversation with the burnponies. Or any other shamany stuff she does to 'Do Better', wait that was the wrong book, 'Be Good'.
Really, any update on this story is good to see. Not even a chapter, but at least a blog post anoouncing a new chapter coming soon. At least for me it would mean a world of difference. I have no problem waiting for another chapter as long as I know it will come. Hard times, less motivation to do anything for months, yea I gotta go study now.
Hope hearing from you soon.
10653640
ACK! You're right! ROCKY IS THE NEW BOO!!!! WEEEPS!
Also...
- Somber 2015
OMG I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR SIX YEARS WHYYYYYYYY!!!! ::Runs off and dies.::
10655746
Someone needs a hug.
derpicdn.net/img/view/2012/10/18/126220.jpg
Sorry.
He’s a spirit bound to a rock. He needs others to carry him around and has no way of communicating with non-shamans. Boo could still interact with others and walk around. The only person Rocky can talk to is Scotch and maybe the occasional spirit or shaman they come across. It makes sense that he would be out of focus most of the time. However, Scotch went to great lengths to “save” him during the last chapter, so one or two sentences just to acknowledge him still being there would’ve been nice.
As for him being a permanent addition of the group who sticks around for the rest of the journey ala Boo: I actually like that idea. Spirits are an important part of Homelands. Having a “benevolent” spirit in the group makes sense. He could be used to explain spirit stuff to Scotch (and the readers). Just like Skylord often explain stuff about the legions they meet or the places they travel through. And while spirits aren’t just Ponies/Zebras/Griffins without a body he has his own fears, hopes and dreams. We also know that spirits can grow to “like” a shaman and then do stuff for free as seen with Lumi and "his" spirit. Maybe not a real friendship but still pretty close.
On the other hand, we already have six main characters in the story and adding another one is just making things more complicated for you as author. And as mentioned above, he can only interact with Scotch Tape and not do much on his own. If Rocky stays with the group, there’s a huge risk of not knowing what to do with him and thus turning him into a character who’s just there but lacks any impact. Him leaving the group sooner or later is probably the better choice. Last thing I want is talking you into adding another main character you don't want and nobdy cares about, when you already have enough other stuff to worry about.
Its here it has finally arrivedd!!
Where's Rocky? After going through that trouble in the last chapter, I expected some mention of him in this one, but nothing. Did Scotch fulfill her part of the agreement and found a new place for him or is he still with the group?
This feels a bit disjointed, as if she looks up at the group for the first time, two times.
This feels like a song, but I can’t figure out what song it's making me think of.
I like how this can be associated with Heartshine mentioning how Blackjack is a prey species managing to behave as a predator one.
This is a fascinating counter-intuitive monster. Makes me think as well of the porcupine paradox.
Makes me wonder just how bad of an oxygen sink Roam is for Equus. The city must be a perpetual low pressure system even with ethereal fire for anyone to still be able to breathe around it, although those haywire talismans could be oxygen making ones just as easily as the methane ones Flare mentioned.
I imagine salves (magical or otherwise) are the biggest business after bullets around Roam, or else the cellular necrosis and rotting would be a big problem for these conscripts just as much as burning too much flesh for their muscles to work would be.
As Perky Ears points out, the vastness of the Zebrican population is an interesting thing to think about, especially if this present day level is less than the War-era population. I can only project that the twelve and one tribes, along with the other species, and combined with the breadth of the continent, meant that a lot of energy was spent just keeping the system from collapsing from internal disagreements and cultural inertias.
It’s also a wonder that even with the Mountain King’s particulate-cleansing how Scotch’s lungs can stand to function at all in this city
As much as Scotch, her friends, and those seemingly incidental characters they encounter are enjoyable to follow, each chapter brings up questions that are fascinating to think about! Looking forward to the next!
Time to dive into the fireworks.
I liked the Logos village. I hope they encounter Hexan again sometime.
Oh, hello Fibonacci Sequence.
Dang, finally finished this, crazy chapter... well things are getting very interested, I'm excited to see what happens next.
10666036
To quote Somber:
He’s still with the group, Somber just forgot about him.
Are those human skulls you are eluding to in those last couple of chapters?
So Roam is on fire. Wonder if Scotch and friends will find remnants of Jetstream.
Say Somber, what does Charity look like?
Thanks so much for a new update! This fic is the only reason I sometimes check back here.
10676220
Yellow Unicorn with a blue mane.
10681612
And here I've been assuming she was pink. Don't know how that happened. Thanks.
10682676
Weirdly enough... so did I
Huzzah!
...Oh! Wow.
10674536
Considering that more than half of the Marauders were still around 200 years later and all of them suffered a more or less horrifying fate, my money is on Jetstream either being the giant fire monster or some other angry spirit thingy that keeps Roam on fire.
So....I want to know more about Ixion now, how was it made and why does it know Tannit/Pythia?
