Hell yeah! Checked my mail in the middle of the night and BANG - new chapter for Homelands to dive in ).
i an interesting change but still, great job! i really hope you are safe in those uncertain times
UPDATE! worth the wait.
I know all about surviving Covid. It almost killed me last year. I wish it would finish the job.
I was a bit lost with one of the earlier sections for not having brushed up before reading this, but Thrush and Mahealani's interactions are absolute gold. Loved this chapter!
I'm not sure if you ever figured this out, but writing edgy MLPxFallout crossovers as an outlet for your manic-depressive fueled sadomasochistic fantasies is not and never will be a viable alternative for professional therapy and antidepressants.
11048001
True, but it is cheaper.
Chapter 17 had Xharo as the son and Xarian as the husband.
Major, major OOF. OMC.
oh no
Fascinating, fascinating stuff whether Taliba's mind for truth is just interpreting the spirits' activities as a court or if that really is more or less what they're doing when not pestering people in person
It was neat to see the Bone Legion-Propoli town working to emerge. I'll continue hoping against genre that the generations-long taint of the brand won't overcome what Marrow, Xona, and Xarian can work out.
The mystery regarding the mechanics of Lumi's spirit being devoured is engaging, and I fearfully look forward to what Niuhi does on the Seahorse!
I stayed up late coding. It was 1:30. Checked Fimfiction. Now its 3:21. Worth it! :) Thank you!

4:12 now. I have a lab due tomorrow.

Projection is unhealthy.

I’ll give you the benefit of doubt and assume this is actually a jerkish way of telling Somber to get professional help. In which case I would like to point out that he already did that. And that maybe - just maybe - writing “edgy MLPxFallout crossovers” while obviously not being a substitution for medicine, is something he does enjoy and actually helps him feel better.
But if you just wanted to tells us that you don’t like the story while acting like an ass, feel free to ignore this comment. 😒
11048076
thanks for pointing those out. They should all be fixed.
Thank you for doing this. Keep on keeping on, hope you will overcome all your problems!
Damnit! I've already used the "It's alive!" meme twice this week. Joking aside, very happy to see this one continuing.
Great to see a new chapter =)
Sorry to hear about your Covid stress, but you're not alone
"the older stallion in a sharp, brittle voice"
"the older stallion replied in a sharp, brittle voice"?
"An equine skull sat on the corner with a small glyph that read ‘It’s how overdue?’"
"An equine skull sat on the corner with a small set of glyphs that read ‘It’s how overdue?’"? Unless that really is contained in a single glyph? I'm afraid that I don't at present recall how plausible that is, sorry; it's been a while.
"That got a guffaw from the sailor, who took another drink from the bottle as Thrush returned it. “Eye Scream’s meeting with Riptide?”"
Who is the speaker there? Mahealani?
"“Ship,” Thrust repeated."
"“Ship,” Thrush repeated."?
"Thrust flung the coins at the face of the other"
"Thrush flung the coins at the face of the other"?
"Thrust said as she pulled on the rope."
"Thrush said as she pulled on the rope."?
And another quite enjoyable chapter; thank you for writing, and thank you, editors!
I'm sorry about the mental health difficulties, though; good luck.

Who are you?
As always, well worth the wait! Great chapter, keep up the great work!
Awesome update! Man, I can't wait to read this again; usually I'm pretty great at remembering things in a story, but this really had me grasping for strings on who the characters were.
I have a terrible foreboding feeling the curse marks on all the Legion is going to be some kind of Order 66 work of magic.
Glad to see Nihui (shark girl) make a comeback.
Scotch has already been in Roam for 6 months, or is that how long Vicious has seen her? And damn... she's too young to be getting cancer! Hope Scotch can heal her curse. Also see the whole horcrux thing going on. I'm looking forward to the big reveal on that front.
Cool to finally get a bit of closure on the hit on Charity's group. Really liked that Perky pointed out they're adults now.
Love these little vignettes of everything going on in the world. Also makes me dread when next big "life boom & bust" happens.
I Love it when you update. Thank you for sticking with us. I know life sucks right now, but you can always talk with us. Please take care of yourself Somber.
Love this chapter, so much has happened! Thanks Somber, can't wait for the next!
Always glad to see this one update
Yay, updates! I will wait as long as necessary for more (I know how hard it can be to maintain a good upload schedule). Also, oh my god I love Thrush. She is like a more insane and less likely to die version of Blackjack and I love it

Your a smuck
Hey Fivisey! (@ Niuhi) what do I win?
Is this the chapter where Scotch is being held hostage by Zebra wearing a strange mask , wanting to play a game?
Leave it to the Propoli to create a settlement in record time. In two months, you have plumbing. In three months, the first school opens. In four months, you get an area where you can watch drunk Logos beating each other with sticks.
To say that I have a low opinion of the Propoli would be an understatement. After reading their tribe entry, they became the first (and only) tribe I genuinely don’t like at all. Now Xona, Xarian and the rest of the setter are decent Zebras who helped Scotch without expecting anything return. And they left Bastion, which implies they are sick of the Propoli system and wanted a fresh start where things a different.
But ruining nice things is something the tribe is awfully good at. MY inner cynic expects that after a few generations the descendants of the current settler have all but forgotten why their ancestors left Bastion in the first place and things take a turn for worse.
This is such an awesome line. I'm going to steal it.
It’s possible to resist this urge. So at least the branding isn’t completely overwriting common sense. Another notably thing is that only the leader of the legion shows these effects. When Marrow was a lieutenant she didn’t show any signs of strong paranoia, but as soon as she got promoted to leader the effects kicked in rather quickly. It’s unlikely that the rest of the tropes aren’t affect as well, but at least it’s to a lesser extent. Maybe if you are not a Zebra – like Tempest – it even easier to resist because you don’t believe in spirits?
Also makes one wonder about a certain Griffon and how much of Skylord’s behavior is actually Skylord and how much the subtitle influence of the branding.
I wonder if this is the first time a shaman noticed that something is wrong with the branding. Some legions have shamans, but since they are branded as well, they are probably unable to notice the side effects. Non-legion shamans, on the other hand, don’t really get close enough to the leaders for a close examination. And If they do, they keep their mouths shut unless they want to get on the bad side of a guy/gal prone to irrational behavior.
Still, it has been 200 years, so it’s unlikely that none has noticed this before. It’s just that nobody was able/wanted to do anything about it until now.
These two want to play Command & Conquer, while the rest is more interested in Anno Domini.
Wow Taliba, that’s pretty condescending. Zencori aren’t the only ones interested in books, you know.
This guy is just so down with all these overexcited Zencori he has to deal with during all his years as door guard. He clearly must’ve pissed of the wrong Zebra to be punished with that position.
Good thing nobody knows about the part where Blackjack became the Lightbringer’s immortal lover. If she knew, I’m sure she would call Security a self-insert character in a fanfic written by a twelve-year-old filly or colt with a crush on Littlepip.
To be fair to her: Taliba just showed up proclaiming that the crazy tale about the cyborg alicorn who went to the moon and somehow came back from the death is actually true without any proof except “the spirits told me”. Not instantly believing her is perfectly understandable.
For the first time in the history of the entire Zencori tribe, the fictional story in the head of a tribe member was less crazy than the truth.
Okay here’s what I think:
- Broken is either Hiroto or a very clever Red Herring.
- Since we already saw a few of Tremendous Twelve still being around and kicking, I’m making a wild guess and say that all or at least most of them aren’t death. The reason for them still being alive has something to do with the Last Caesar sharing a part of his power with them. Alternatively, Tanit (see below) has something to do with it.
- Tanit is the only exception, being immortal for a much longer time than the other members of the Twelve. Because she was the one Starkatteri who sabotaged their plan to awaken the Eater. Her immortality is a side effect (curse? gift?) of this.
- The Last Caesar isn’t death . He’s either involved with the New Empire or living as hermit/in a slum under an alias and blaming himself for his actions destroying the empire.
- Subria is the one secretly in charge of Lexia and Hiroto knows it. Since she has a hard one for glorifying the war, she ensures that only the “correct” version of the Truest Truth is being told. The Lightbringer didn’t affect the Zebras at all, so she doesn’t care about that. But a pony defeating the Eater of Souls? Big no!
Looking forward to see how right/wrong I was.
“This job is bad enough as it is. I don’t need hours of agonizing screams. So can you please shut up and die already?”
Okay, obviously someone very powerful told the guards to not intervene.
I had a feeling that had was connected to the Old Road. If there’s any truth to these hallucinations then my guess is that he was sacrificed on the road and his spirit bound to it. Maybe in an attempt to create some sort of Guardian Spirit of the Old Road or to make sure the road would endure the centuries?
After reading this again, I now realized how scary the implications of this scene really are. The Dealer can interact with other characters! He isn’t just stuck with Scotch Tape due to her connection to Blackjack. He can talk with Taliba despite her only having met Scotch briefly. And she can see him, while spirits are normally invisible to even most shamans.
The only spirits that could been seen by non-shamans was Discord. So how powerful is the Dealer? And why does he only now chose to interact with other characters? This is all very worrisome.
I’ve been thinking about this New Empire and I have to ask: Are we sure that they are the bad guys? Yes, the members we have met all have blood on their hooves and use very ruthless methods. But the same could be sad about many of the “good guys”.
The Irons? Fighting a bloody, pointless and never-ending war against the Bloods with the civilian population having to pay the price. Only better than the Bloods because they are more likely to enslave you than rape and kill you.
Vega? Head of a crime syndicate and you don’t reach that position without getting your hooves dirty.
Carnico? Purposely allowing the razor grass to exists so that they can profit from the farmers suffering.
The Sky Legion? Pirates. And not the kind who only steal from the bad guys.
While we don’t know the goal of the New Empire, one could assume that it involves creating a New Empire. Which actually sounds like a pretty good thing. For all it flaws the previous Empire brought an era of stability and peace where the average citizen could actually live a peaceful live without having to worry about becoming a causality in the war of Raider gangs the size of entire armies.
Of course, there’s probably some far more sinister end goal and I rather not want to put Haimon, Riptide or the Shaman into a position of power. But I would totally be onboard with the part that includes getting ride of the legions and uniting Zebrica.
He’d been one of the five. The only one to keep their mouth shut and not object. The only one with a career. A future.
A shitty as the current situation in Rice River is, it may actually the best thing that could happen. Because it forces him to either grow a spin and get ride of the razor grass problem or let the city die. Without the pressure it would be just buisness as usual.
By the way: What happened to his assistant/secretary who was backstabbing him and helped Haimon and Riptide in their attempted takeover of the factory? Is she still alive? I somehow forgot what happened to her.
More similarities between Vicious and Blackjack. Both REALLY love weapons and fighting. Blackjack, however, doesn’t want to kill and always tries to reason with her opponents whenever possible. Vicious on the other hand, doesn’t gives a crap and goes straight for the kill. Or just goes after their families. She would have totally killed Notshy just to hurt Sanguine. Ironically Vicious lack of care about others is also what keeps her mentally stable compared to Blackjack.
Seeing Vicious trying to be nice a traumatized foal is pretty funny.
All things considers Lumi takes the death of his whole group rather well. Hope he isn’t trying to pull a Scotch Tape and is just putting on a brave face.
That sounds like a pretty stupid idea. Most people would try to skip the country and not turn themselves into inmate objects in a presumably painfully and traumatic procedure. Then again, the Starkatteri of old, weren’t the sanest ones.
I really want to know her backstory and how she ended up in Rice River. She probably was from a Stable because a) the Pipbuck and b) it would be another parallel to Blackjack.
You don’t travel across a continent to fight an unnatural being than can eat spirits just for a roommate. Benefits or not. Neither would you break down crying when said roommate left you and is heading into dangerous territory. Not sure if it’s friendship or love, but Vicious cares more for Scotch than she actually realizes.
Thrown Stones and Broken Glass. Pony naming conventions are the best.
I’m still baffled about how ruthless Glass acted. She was a Crusader like Charity. They lived and grow up together in Chapel. Yet Glass still sold her out for a quick profit without a second though. Stone-cold. And a good example what kind of pony Charity would be without her redeeming qualities and principles.
How long have you been working for her? Charity isn’t going to kill you for that.
Obviously, she’s going to deduct it from your wage.
“Buy some slot machines and roulette tables. I'm going to open a casino as soon as I and my new husband are back.”
Narrator: “Captain Mahealani was a proud Atoli Sailor.”
Mahealani :“Admiral, I know that Riptide is involved with the New Empire! We need to arrest her!”
Admiral: “I don’t want to hear any more of this! Riptide is an upstanding pirate. And even if not, she still has diplomatic immunity. Our hooves are tied. Look you have promising career ahead of you. You could be the next admiral! Don't throw it away because you want to chase ghosts.”
*Dramatic scene of Mahealani throwing her boat captain badge on the Admiral’s desk*
Narrator: “But for her next mission she needs the help of an unusual ally!”
Mahealani: “Is she good?”
Random Zebra: “They say she once killed ten Alicorns with nothing but a broken whiskey bottle.”
*A drunken Thrush gets thrown through the window of a seedy bar.*
Thrush: “Hey! I paid for that beer!”
*A beer bottle get’s thrown through the same window hitting her on the head and knocking her out instantly.*
Mahealani: “We are screwed!”
Narrator: “From the writer of “Reapers” and” Goldenblood: The Musical” … “
*Mahealani and Thrush outrunning an explosion.*
Mahealani: “I haaaaate you!”
Narrator: “Comes the next Horizons Cinematic Universe blockbuster ..”
*Mahealani and Thrush kissing while a warship explodes in the background.*
Narrator: “Staring Mahealani and Thrush in: Boat Pals”
Thrush: “We’re gonna steal the ship of that pirate bitch! Are you in?”
*Rampage grins and chews a Mint-al. *
(Isn’t she death? Who cares! Everyone loves Rampage. Putting her into movie will increase the viewership. Let’s just say she’s from a parallel dimension or something.)
…
I have far too much free time.
Let’s if I’ll be able to finish this part without making a single reference to Pirates of the Caribbean.
This is probably pretty offensive. Plus, I’m not sure how easily a pony could pass herself off as a Zebra considering the different snouts and tails. Then again, Eye Scream hasn’t picked them because of their intelligence.
The key to blending in is acting like you belong. And having a clipboard. Although for pirates a bottle of rum is more effective.
Is this a punishment for underperforming or does he purposely hired new sailors with then intention of throwing them into the crates? In aby case, If I was part of the crew that would encourage me to leave at the next harbor and never look back.
Riptide isn’t just a pirate. She’s worse! She has a vision. And for that vision she needs an army. Not just a bunch of rum-drinking thugs and looters.
Okay this isn’t going to top the scene where the mare puked out her guts while beuing dragged into a toilet pipe – nothing can’t beat that scene – but it’s still pretty high on the list of horrible fates that make you want to vomit. No wonder Lamprey was so freaked out and preferred death over this.
The New Empire has access to a coin press. They can print money.
In PH Thrush knew the names of her crew because most of them had been sailing with her for a while. Yet in Homeland’s there’s a completely new crew and she doesn’t even bother to learn their names. Wonder what happened to Oilcan and Sea Biscuit...
Did the rest of her old crew die? Is that the reason why she’s drunk and carless most of the time? Is she not trying to learn the names of her crew because she knows they will all met and gruesome fate and she’s afraid of getting to attached?
Or I’m just overthinking things again?
I didn’t expect Niuhi to join them. I’m also disappointed that we already going back to Scotch in the next chapter. I really want to learn more about her
Weather forecast. Lots of fire.
Hey, so why did Niuhi actually board the boat? Excuse me, ship. I thought she couldn't breathe out of the water.
More than understandable about the toll Covid takes on people. Remember self care first.
That aside I really enjoyed getting to see what was happening in so many other areas and with so many different characters. Granted I will admit to missing Scotch Tape and the gang but this gave us a nice glimpse of the big picture.
I already look forward to the next chapter when you have it ready.
I really should check this more rather than eagle eying the reddit so much for updates.
Will edit this comment after I've had time to sit down and read this but a new chapters always cool.
This is my favorite recurring gag. Even the universe acknowledges how over the top Blackjack's story is
Quite possibly the most unabashedly self-deprecating paragraph I have ever laid eyes on.
DAMN YOU DEALER, QUIT STICKING YOUR DUSTY-ASS SNOUT IN EVERYONE'S BUSINESS JUST TO FUCK WITH THEM
Oooo, "devivify", that's a good one.
Pernicious! You're on a roll now.
Badump tsss.
You love to see it! So glad to see some more
Not going to lie, I had lost track of some of the characters so I had to go back and reread some stuff. Hope this next year is better for you Somber
Did that Secretariat have a Death Note?
11056991
Yeah, I think she did. Afterall, she did wright her name in a black book after they had their talk.
I leave for about 5yrs and you're still at it? Right on, guess I'll have some reading to catch up on in the coming months.
Glad to see a new chapter, keep it coming whenever you get the chance. This story is an awesome sequel.
I haven't commented on this story before because I only recently read it in epub format, so I'd just like to say that Homelands is among the best-written FoE stories out there, and is superior in quality to PH in terms of pacing, character development and interaction, tone, and world-building, and I hope you're proud of what you've accomplished with it and how vastly you've improved as a writer.
Your continuation of Homelands over so many years is an inspiration to me. I've written a lot less, and my story is much smaller in scope, but I still have the drive to finish it, while also working on an original novel that occupies 80% of my brain's idle time, thanks in no small part to authors such as you.
So, thank you for an incredible journey and the inspiration.
Had my mature notifications disabled for a year without realising. Wondered why things were so quiet, and now I have a lot of catching up to do.
Even so, it's a testament to your writing that I can still remember all these characters, storylines, and new implications even years since I first encountered them.
It's been another hell of a year, but be well, Somber.
A full chapter with nary hide nor hair of Scotch. Rather interesting seeing what’s happening around the country though!
Oh excellent. Can't wait to read this. I will have to skim back a chapter or two to get back into the story. Thanks for this update.
New chapter cool

This aged pretty well, considering what happened in the G5 movie.
Charity
11055147
Nah, just the storyteller tribe does. Universe is just amused.
Excellent and compelling chapter. Lots to think about and digest. I like the references to Blackjack and PH. Strength to you for the future.
May have taken me more then a month to read, but it was worth it.
Love the chapter, and I am awaiting the next installment, whenever it is done.
11105605
I've also been collecting notes with the intention to start adding them to wiki after I finish reading. I even have a map (though still missing a lot of details).

Somber has lore on his Patreon page for I think $1 patrons.
11106599
I'd like to see this map.
