Wheeeeeeeeew the updates man, goodness.
Awesome chapter man, awesome chapter~ I like Vicious... she's awesome~
I'm beginning to start to wonder if through Blackjacks suffering and determination, that she gave birth to a new spirit.
The Dealer seems like a bit of an instigator and bringing guilt to those that are in situations out of their control. Hopefully Scotch Tape can get herself out of this situation. Edit: Though I have to admit Scotch Tape certainly is developing an odd ability... Could she be developing Shaman abilities? Seems odd if true. Seeing as her special talent seems more geared to being an engineering and construction.
Well dang. First I was getting the feeling that things were going to go horribly wrong, then I started feeling okay after everyone had dinner and actually started enjoying the festival after Desideria got knocked into the water.
And THEN everything started going horribly wrong. Ay-yai-yai...
Hmm...Vicious isn't all that bad.
Also, Dealer. WHAT.
i.ytimg.com/vi/6pGIWdfXpJw/maxresdefault.jpg
Looks something like that I'd imagine.
I been wondering for a while now, do Scotch and her friends speak to each other in Pony? Or has it just been in zebra, even in privacy?
Scotch Tape, rat whisperer! Some sort of Animal Friendship, perhaps?
Depending on your proclivities you might, given the upcoming festival!
So this guy's a Guardian of the Galaxy trained by Mad Eye Moody XD
You mean the rat, that was yours? Hmmm. Did it keep quiet because she asked it to? Sounds like you've got some competition then!
Probably nothing. Certainly not a ghost or a spirit or anything. Probably has nothing to do with accepting this treasured mask. Nope.
That seems a bit suspicious. Procrastination is a seductive thing, but this city is objectively awful to the majority of residents and given how some of the others will later give extremely similar responses to this statement I'm betting there's some supernatural shenanigans involved.
Well, the moon's toenail did kind of annihilate an undead star, so there's some credit to what she's saying.
Waypoint added! I wonder what the chances are that she'll get interrupted before actually saying where it is.
What about the point-blank matter-antimatter annihilation death throes of an exploding undead star? Think that's a bright enough flash to cause at least some temporary blindness?
Ah, so you mean with that Blackhole Megaspell or Starkatteri sickly light voodoo. That's... not all that rare when you get down to it, not to mention actually feasible given the right exotic materials. You don't even need to go to the moon to pull that stuff off.
Again, further evidence that Errukine's gravity-based examples are on pretty shaky ground.
Whu-buh? That's a bit sudden of you, I'd say! ((Did we miss a moment of internal dialogue here, was this a spur-of-the-moment thing?))
Baring her face but guarding her heart? Either way, Spirits traditionally favour honesty and forthrightness, right?
Erm... there are issues with this phrasing, Scotch. One man's Controlled Burn is another man's Scorched Earth. Not just a simple tree or snake spirit you're invoking here.
Maybe everyone's weirded out that she's being super informal with the spirits, on top of being a foreign Earther? (come to think of it, she's probably still got a wicked Equestrian accent)
Got some heavy Pentecost vibes there.
Alert, Scotch Tape! You got more downtime than Blackjack ever had but the plot has finally found you again!
Given how zebra curses and spirit legality work, best bet is to deny anything and hope they don't notice you.
Also, this totally won't come up in a later chapter, where it's actually the residents are tied up, lit on fire, and thrown into the river. =D
IIiinteresting. She specifically kept herself mask-less, and made an effort to remove Scotch's mask. And the sons she has on hand to be violent for her ARE masked.
Whoa, that's some brutal unluck. Should'a worn a mask, buddy. Roll natural 1s for your next checks.
Dude, did she just crush a rat into a freaking visible SOUL?
A chance to see new horizons. XD
Ah right. Since they'd be away from the festival they'd be out of range from the censure.
Was it the rat? You can hear a rat die? Well, I guess you are a part-princess Life-Zeb after all. Still though, wow that's a handy power.
Strong distinction there, "Not Fighting". Definitely not violating the peacebond or anything. Certainly going to keep his mask on, so that the spirits don't know who he is, even if he were fighting. DENY EVERYTHING.
Ohhh, so the Rat was a SPELL... or spirit I guess given Life-Zeb mentioned one? That explains how it was pulverized into ectoplasm at any rate. Explains his part of Vega's "Track Her" order, earlier.
Well, aura sight pretty much confirmed. Good luck, Scotch. Better ante-uhhh... hrm. Maybe just take a hard swig and don't go mad?
I thiiiink I'm seeing the pattern here. And just after we see more Shaman Scotch, too. HRMMMMMMMMM.
Hey Scotch, I think The Wasteland is following you. Sure is a good thing that a Cursed Pony was the one who invoked the spirits of the Bacchanalia, eh?
That Bacchanalia sprit-breese is perking right up, isn't it? Hey Dealer, I happened to notice you don't have any eyes. Are you by chance Blind and some sort of Watcher or Eye? Possibly of The World? XD Whatever the case, I'm sure this Kindly Spirit's going to have a Grand Old Time.
Ah, more spectral shennanigans. I guess these red phantoms trail mad spirits with them. Something tells me that bringing your own spiritual atmosphere means that you don't have to worry so much about a kindly-spirit's censure.
Not quite at "Dirty Sludge Miasma", but it seems like the Iron Legion is into some dirty shit as well.
Shaman-visible, clearly. Can't keep your Karma up when you swagger with these fiends though, Des.
Ahhh, so that's why you wanted the Baccanalia delayed a year. Wouldn't want the Kindly Spirits to see the shit move you're pulling against your own people. It's rather ironic that your refusal to invoke ANY spirits for the festival lead to someone else lead to your enemy invoking the worst possible spectators for your event. Those spirits of life and growth are totally going to favour you after this stunt. They might even reward you with red stripes! Lucky day! =D
Oh hey, Red Eyes were mentioned before, weren't they?
I guess now we know what Scotch meant about Skylord's unsettling Red Eyes. Skylord wasn't sludge-coated, so I'm guessing he's not too far past initiation. But then again, we're only really seeing this come up after the Spirit Invoking, so maybe his was burned away in the Fresh Beginning?
What? Torture and death from the blood legion? Perish the thought! I'm beginning to seriously wonder what Des' play was here, or whether she even stopped to consider the logistics at all. Clearly this Glass Leader failed to clearly look through her own plan to foresee the consequences.
Iiiiinteresting. Horrible mutilation followed by Murder is just a tiny amount of black sludge, is it? And you're flowing with this stuff? I'm sure you're a wonderful person and that everything will be wonderful forever!
Colonel of Iron vs Major of Blood, stomping outside a city-divided.
That...
...sounds...
...familiar.
Perhaps a pattern here? Some kind of Sword of Damocles situation? Either way, Nobody Leaves The Syndicate, especially with Tchernobog around. ((Techernobog->Chernobyl->Wormwood?))
Looks like Scotch interrupted a scheduled ethnic cleansing and rampped it up into a Supernatural Incident. She'll be lucky if she makes it to Carnico before this mess explodes. Gotta hand it to Scotch, though- Blackjack didn't have to deal with this kind of escalation, this early. "To those whom much is given, much is expected," I suppose. =)
I think it's rather funny that zebras say ponys don't know anything about spirits. Here comes Scotch, who seems to be a shaman and noone tells her anything or they try to kill her for it. But yes ponys are sooooo ignorant too the spirits. Hypocrites!
0.0
Desidera is Cersei and Haimon is the High sparrow this is gonna blow up in her face
As for Scotch's new ability I can think of a couple things that might have caused it from PH, alot of spirits trapped in pitbuck matrices; stars; moon dust and whatever the legate was but I dont see why it have an effect now after a year in rice river.
7264907 Hey, you try and zebrafy Messier. I don't name em. I just try and use them. But yeah.
7263082 Yes. About as shocking as a pony meeting a zebra Twilight Sparkle.
7263014 Thanks. I love reading those. They are extremely helpful.
As psycho as Vicious is, at least you know where you stand with her. If she's got a problem with you, she'll smash your face, not snipe and undermine.
Still psycho, though. This is... uncomfortable, to say the least, though I admit not the most uncomfortable situation Scotch has ever been in.
I'm not sure how useful masks are when you're color coded, but anyway.
This answers a question I had a couple chapters ago. Neat!
Oh, interesting. I wonder whether they're branded as Dashites or if they could slip away to Zebrinica without so much fanfare.
I'll grant, if you've had something shot off, this beats several of the alternatives.
I wonder if they run off of blood sugar or if you have to feed them Carnico brand Symbiont Chow. Surely they must link into the host's circulatory system to get oxygen and reject waste. Otherwise this mare would have to avoid standing in water for too long, and periodically go outside to walk her foot...
Yeah, I'm over-thinking this.
And "invincible" is stretching it rather a lot.
This is remarkably specific for a 'bad feeling'. I'm going to ascribe it to spirits.
I swear, Somber, if that rat's name turns out to be Jenkin...
Okay, weird skill then?!
Hmm. So she would know how to sabotage them, too...
I love that Scotch thinks of rotgut as 'solvent'.
I'm not sure I'd be proud of a diploma from the PIT.
(I know, it's probably actually something more like "Istituto Propoli di Tecnologia".)
Huh. Funny to think that the alicorns might be familiar with Scotch.
...I'm not sure whether I want the purple to be Psalm or not...
Oh, I like it.
That's interesting... one of Tchernobog's watchers, or a metal spirit? And is this a sign of her growing shaman powers, or is the mask special? Or perhaps participating in a holiday ritual naturally draws one closer to the spirit world...
That sounds much better than a nuclear war. Can we get a redo?
Wow. That was a remarkably moving speech.
Fruit Stripe Gum!
Iiiinteresting. Sounds like wearing a mask on Bacchanalia does draw you closer to the spirit world.
Huh! I thought zonies were supposed to be sterile...
Again with the zebras and the "impossible". Maybe an ant can't meaningfully interact with a pony, but an anthill sure can. And Twilight Sparkle had a spell for turning gravity sideways, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea of manipulating fundamental forces. Hell, if the Eye is everywhere, then maybe the blinding is a temporary, localized effect that can be controlled -- like, say, that thing that happened at the end of last chapter. If you can do that, you just need a big enough power source to extend the effect to the whole planet just long enough to wipe out all life.
Heh, clever.
Oh, I dunno. A certain filly managed to make it work.
...okay, you have no idea how ponies work, do you.
Well then. Guess it's all out in the open now.
Welp. Time to go.
Well... that's a thing. Does that imply that Celestia had some shamanistic powers, or was she just the guest speaker like Cecelio?
Also, cough.
Cough!
Oh, god. The way he presents that... his real name wouldn't happen to be some variation on "Peter Quill", would it?
Oh god so cute...
She strikes me less as "all the bad parts of Blackjack" and more as a close cousin to Rampage.
LOL. So awesome.
But they're so much fun!
I feel a little sorry for Vicious, but she's also showing some codependence I don't like. As if Scotch were never going to grow up or pursue her own future.
*sigh* Dick move, but I can't exactly blame her.
Oh, so THAT was one of Tchernobog's watchers...
Oh... oh! She shushed the rat, and it obeyed the order!
So Peter Quill. In my head, he's totally played by Chris Pratt now.
Oh... oh shit. So for the duration, the festival is Scotch's sanctum.
Tsunkatteri.
*facepalm*
...okay, Pythia, start talking now while you have the chance.
It's good to see another shaman who doesn't treat Starkatteri like they have the plague.
I wonder... maybe being in her (temporary) place of power is enhancing Scotch's spirit senses?
I most emphatically do not hope that's Psalm.
That is, quite frankly, far better than the alternative. I don't trust Carnico any farther than I can throw their factory, but "can't trust" is a damn sight better than "likely to kill on sight".
...this was filler?
Oh. I guess so. I hadn't actually noticed. So, ah, no, it didn't. :D
7263014
Tchernobog was a Slavic deity of darkness, most famously portrayed as the "Bald Mountain" demon in Disney's Fantasia.
So it shows Blackjack hanging by a tree and then switches to Scotch, but, isn't Blackjack still alive? Maybe it's a mind trick since Scotch believes that she is dead. Either way, Dealer has become more sinister, in my opinion. Got that vibe off of him.
Shit has hit the fan... Again !!!
That card... was that the Hanged Mare tarot card?
7263004
I do imagine zebra just to help Scotch and Precius with it.
7274997
Maybe Blackjack is still dead? It looked like some time passed, like few years at minimum, before she awoken... again.
Also, it's not like that anypony exept Psalm and Boo knows thah she is alive.
And you know what? This story needs more, much more Boo. I will love to see zebras react to her, a inteligent Blank, who is also a next Discord. :D
7289274
I support the inclusion of Boo but seeing how the story goes, I cannot imagine Mr. Somber adding her to Homelands.
7300245
Knowing Boo, I think that we will se her later, much later. Exatly when she will be needed to do a "little" chaos. ;)
I've been trying to put off reading this till there was a few chapters but I can't wait much longer. I NEED IT.
This a fantastic world you are weaving here Somber, keep it up!
I just got caught up. I immediately dove in after just finishing Project Horizons. I love your writing. Keep up the truly excellent work!
The black ichor thing which seemingly indicates corruption kinda reminds me of the curses from "Princess Mononoke". Together with Scotch's shamanic powers things are getting more and more interesting ;]
7301038 Then we find out that Discord, 'boo', is Actually the 'Spirit' of chaos, Disharmony, and the physical entity for the world. Aka, the eye of the world.
I can't wait to read more.
I was expecting a bit more from that festival after having all that hype around it. Thought Scotch Tape was going to have a nice time, for once :/
7274997 Dealer is getting pissed off that he never seems to have the Ace.
That had me laughing way harder than it should have!
Hey Somber, you feeling ok? Chapter seven and no sex, thats not li- oh....there it is
Is Skylord a parody of Star Lord?
Badonkadonk-fu?
But somezebra are more equal than others?
Aww, that's adorable!
The spirit of Blackjack?
I'm kind of wondering how the ponies pulled all this crap. Not why, just how.
That's an interesting point. What happens if Scotch starts talking about how kidnapping is breaking the peaceful intent of the festival?
Hell with that, I want to hear her taunt a tank to death. She's the bard, it's her job!
Oh no.
And then Scotch&Co burn down Rice River?
I see it shaping into these OP novels i dislike. The Chase, Madman Diaries, you name it ...
lemme guess: Queen Scotch Tape, Legate Scotch Tape, or just goddess?
Things are really heating up. And more spirit stuff, yay!
Did Pythia say any such thing this chapter? I don't remember that, and I just read it. Could just be that my reading comprehension is bad, though.
For some reason, like the glowing stripes thing, I get the feeling this oily miasma is not visible to just everyone or anyone.
Scotch is undoubtedly developing seer like powers. She is becoming more worthy.
I find this a pleasant twist as it expands on a subject it's precursor only hinted at.
7263004
I think it's in Zebra until otherwise mentioned. It's like speaking Spanish in America - a way to hide what you're talking about.
Wait what?
WHAT.
...
I feel like we're learning a lot about Celestia we didn't before...
8867205
What? A thousand years is a really long time...
So there’s a lot of spiritual shot going on today. This town is gonna be burning by the time they leave I call it.
Precious, you gettin' thicc girl.
Please, don't become like Blackjack, especially with those things around! You're too innocent to be turned into a thing!
8869060
I think I remember mentioned in PH that Celestia would marry the Caesar for political reasons. Makes me wonder what the pony equivalent would be. A much prettier/taller little pony? Maybe that's who ponies like Fluer dis Lee and Sassy Saddles descend from.
Vicious is what Blackjack would be without her conscience. Blackjack became really good at killing ponies, but she doesn’t like it and doesn’t intentionally harm innocents - with varying degrees of success. Vicious is also good at killing ponies and she enjoys it. She brags about it and keeps trophies. And doesn’t give a crap about innocent lives. She would make a good villain for Blackjack, because if these two mares ever meet only one of them will survive.
Of course, there’s also a possibility that her behavior is just a coping mechanism. Blackjack often keeps up the facade of a goofy sex-addicts, so she doesn’t have to deal with her traumas. Maybe Vicious bragging about her kills, but deep down she hates herself for being such a horrible pony who’s only good at taking lives.
There’s a market for creepy Bodies modification symbionts in Rice River? I guess Riptide’s fliers are something similar. I was wondering what kind of sane person would stick something like that onto it, but then I remembered that there are humans who inject blue color into their eyes.
This part also finally made me realize why this story feels a bit off for being a Fo:E story. Because it’s not. It’s a Cyberpunk/Shadowrun: Equestria story. Huge overpopulated city where everyone is miserable and poor? Check! City is run by crime syndicates and evil mega corps? Check! Body modifications which may come with horrible side effects? Check! Dying from too many symbionts is basically the Essence loss of Shadowrun. Doesn’t make this a bad story, it’s just something I noticed. Maybe it will feel more like a Fallout story again, once they’re back on the road.
“We are at war with the most powerful nation on the planet? I better piss off a large bunch of my followers and lower their moral by banning their biggest festivals because I don’ like them.” Suddenly I can see why the Zebras lost the war with such a tactical genius in charge.
Scotch has forgotten the mission and settled down in Rice River. No surprise, a year is a long time. But I agree with Pythia, they are on a mission and they longer they wait, the worse things probably will get. Besides, being a sort-of relationship with a mare who enjoys killing far too much, isn’t a good thing. Scotch deserves somepony better.
So the Zebra’s are cool with Celestia? One would assume that with that the big war and all that happened between Ponies and Zebras, Suntripes would be outcasts that are slightly more tolerated that Starkatteri. Especially since we’ve seen our fair share of Zebras who still hate ponies. Maybe the common opinion is that Celestia was the good one and a friend of the Zebra and everything bad that happened was that “evil” Luna’s fault?
There are clearly worse people in this story than Desideria, but she’s still a bitch. Ruining the mood of the festival with a rant about purity and then refused to participate in the opening ceremony out of spite. Good thing that Scotch was there.
When you put all your skills points in Repair and try to pass a Speech challenge. Next time you try that better take some Mint-als first, read a copy of Meeting People and put on a checkered suit.
The friend-foe detection system of the Pipbuck never made sense to me and never will. It feels like some that was take straight from the Fallout Game without anyone putting any thought into how it would actually work. Yes, magic, I get it! But I fell it’s not a good enough explanation. How does the system know that someone wants to harm you? Can it read minds? Does it detect hostile thoughts? Why does it work on animals and marks them as hostiles? They don’t hate you, they’re just hungry and want something to eat. It makes no sense!
A griffon who named himself Skylord, is working with a group of criminals, dual-wields pistols and has redish-brown feathers. Peter Quill, is that you?
Yep she’s evil Blackjack.
Kind of a dick move of Pythia to manipulated events so that Vicious would kick Scotch out. Still, they have an important mission and Vicious... She’s everything bad people say about Blackjack and worse. Her first solution to a problem is murder and went that doesn’t work you murder the problems family. Her only redeeming quality is that she cares about Scotch.
What I noticed about Scotch is that she’s a lot less interested in sex that Blackjack. She had two one-night stands in this chapter and is in some kind of relationship with Vicious but that’s about it. If Blackjack was there, she would spend the three days fucking as many creatures as possible. I always thought Blackjack was Blackjack because of her Stable. But Scotch, who grew up in the same Stable, is a lot less obsessed with sex. So I guess Blackjack’s just a very, very horny mare.
What exactly is Scotch Tape's age right now?
Scotch really has lost track of time. It's been at least two years since she ran with Blackjack and her crew. One year passed from BJ's death killing The Eater to Scotch leaving Equestria. And now one year to the day has passed in Rice River.
I guess 24 months counts as "so many months"?
I really like that 'filler' you put in this chapter. Often I need to pause mid chapter and take a break because so much is happening at once
I really enjoyed the pacing of this chapter ^.^
Poor Alicorns didn't deserve this.
