It can be written to be VERY descriptive or trashy quickly thrown together ship fics. Obscene you could switch with NSFW meaning something you would not or shouldn't bring to work. Pretty much not public stuff but there are exceptions to this. Smut can also be magazines with pictures or even just the fics I mentioned. Smut always has some sort of sexual theme or interaction in it. Which is what classifies it as Smut.
