This was really well written. You captured Luna's personality and emotions perfectly. The story is a great look into what she could've gone through on the moon during her banishment.
6119539 I've always thought about her time on the moon. I feel like the reason she came back after 1000 years as NMM still is because she went insane with longing; she wanted to return so badly, she went insane with that desire.

I've never thought of her going insane with the desire to return before, but that makes sense.
It could explain why Nightmare Moon's "challenges" to Twilight and her friends where lest fatal then they might have been. Even in her madness she wanted more than anything to come home, and defeat was her only path.
