2) Convince Soarin, Lightning Dust and Sunset Shimmer to join. Check
3) Deal with the emotional problems of a timid coltfriend, a headstrong mare trying to prove herself and an all powerful mage that's terrified Celestia is going to show up and vaporize her?
4) Use said group to protect an alicorn of magic, who’s stronger than the entire Royal Guard combined?
5) Don’t stress out from all the press ready to bash away at every attempt you make to prove that you are capable as Captain?
6) Have three buds to take care of you when everything goes to Tartarus as you’re embroiled in a political plot that will possibly create soldiers that can fight against alicorns? Check.

So is this going to be a harem story for Soarin then? He's got the girlfriend he's already sleeping who needs him to keep her from going crazy but their relationship has cooled; you've got two bad girls, one that's reformed and another that is still caught up in the wild life; the staple twins that are underlings and has to answer to him; and you've got the bookworm who's his boss and also is able to hold conversations with him that go over most others heads.
Oh, there's also the other token guy in the story that won't be a problem for him because he's got his eyes set on someone else.

Its funny though, since I'm just dropping you guys into the middle of Dash and Soarin's relationship, and I'm playing a very socially ignorant Soarin, all signs really do point to him being Casanova. But as time goes, you'll see his relationship develop with Lightning Dust, and I meant what I said when they shouldn't even be able to be in the same room together. Their scenes are gonna be a lot of fun and a lot of just awkward.
Don't count Thunderlane out quite yet though. He may be taken, but like you said, there's a lot mares he's working with.
Also... this is due to not knowing about Dash and Soarin's relationship too much, but its far from cold.... more like they're just barely getting used to the idea of not being below freezing and just at freezing.

Dash might have a little bit more bark then her bite though, that's not to say her bite can't crush steel, but when you claim the ability to destroy planets, steel hardly seems scary.

Ah, yes. Princess Celestia. You're right, I may have gone overboard with the never losing a single piece, but I did it to over value a pawns worth for the object lesson, and too start on my depiction of Celestia. Most attempts I see at her (while still being a good character) have her overpowered or overloving. I'm attempting to do both, where she has this perfect balance between knowing how to not seem that she's over everyone, and yet at the same time be so far ahead that its impossible for anyone to catch up. We'll get more of that in the next chapter, so we'll see how that goes.

A little yes, but I agree it was a good scene. I really don't have any thoughts on how it would have been done differently, apart from having Celestia not letting Rainbow take a pawn but let her get a rook in it's place. Over several games, it would drive Rainbow crazy to see better pieces let go in place of a lesser piece, only to be shown that every piece has value and it's only ones perception that makes the value of a piece matter. I look forward to seeing the next chapter.
I love this story. It's too bad we didn't get to see Rainbow tell Sunset that she was dating Soarin. That would have been a funny scene.

I've been having a lot of issues with it. First, I didn't know how I wanted to characterize Luna... Then Celestia, and now I've scrapped my main idea for the story so I can focus on the characters of the even tide watch. Essentially, I've had trouble moving the story from act 1 to act 2, and it's been bothering me. Keep bugging me though, and I'll figure it out.
