They always say to love your neighbor as well as your enemy. In some cases, the person in question could be both.

Lol, called it!
Huh. I half expected her to FedEx it back to the hive
It's sweet to see that Chrysalis, Trixie, and Adrian have officially become friends. Still, I feel bad for Chrysalis' situation given how she was abandoned by her people and finally giving up her identity as queen by destroying her memento of her time as a ruler. Best chapter so far.
Huh... neat. Yeah, I'm with Chrysalis on this one; whichever queen comes next can get her own damn crown. A symbol of power and personal achievement can only be respected by the one who made those achievements in the first place.
a quick teleportation spell to zap myself, ouyt of the palace
ouyt?
That's the only typo that stood out.
Excellent chapter! Loved every syllable in there except that extra y.
When this chapter came out, my hype was thru the roof. When I saw this, I had fangasmed. 'Nuff said.
[Thanks (/ ^3^)/]
Sup,
Good chapter, it gave us some insight on how chrysalis feels about her banishment. Also it developed them as friends. I'd like to go on record and say I inspired the Ember pony but I did not make the final cut. Keep up the good work Sketchy!
D'aaww.
and that is why
queenchrysalis is my favoritestayclassy
An eavesdropping scene that doesn't result in contrived misunderstandings? What is the world coming to!
Comic book backstory references! Opening up without snarky commentary! Why, it's like they're capable of being decent people or something
Typo: "strong enough to being her to her knee" should presumably be "bring".
It's nice to see ones own contributions to a succesfull story and be a reasonable part in it.
And now... we celebrate:
Relationship Upgrade: Full On Friendship!
Or as I like to call it, a Super Potion!

6247015 A little excessive for a nosebleed. She hasn't even hit yellow health
When I read Moon Beam, I thought of Nnm servant that shapeshifts into monsters and stuff.
You know what? I actually forgot Moon Beam was one of my suggestions until I saw my name pop up in the author's note.
Trixie, is there something you've been hiding from us? Don't tell me you're experimenting with R63 spells for your next routine.
What to say about the chapter in general? It felt very different from the rest of the story. Obviously it was light on comedy and heavy on character stuff. But this change in the dynamic feels very organic and natural at this point. We've seen them go from mutual loathing to tolerating each other to grudging respect. Now the last defenses have crumbled, and we see them as friends.
The conclusion of this important scene feels very much like:
And I mean that in a good way.
It'll be interesting to see how their lives will progress from here on out, now that they're facing the challenges ahead together. Though I'm curious to know what became of the Changeling nation after Chrysalis. Kinda expecting them to have gone even more downhill, only to come looking for Chryssie in the future and begging her to return. And how will this new Chrysalis react to such an offer?

This is what I get for editing past midnight.
Huzzah for back story! Double huzzah for back story that didn't immediately result in conflict! So tired of the back story reveal just being used as a new source of tension and relationship resets.
Glad to see that the three of them are coming to terms with that they are in fact 'friends.' even if they don't quite believe it.
Also may have squee'd a little when I saw Comet Tail mentioned... and may have squee'd a bit more when she didn't go home. Congrats Sketchy, you got me to care about a fictitious TV show about modeling.
Really happy about that resolution!
The Daaaws! I love them!
How do you even know that? I mean it's a changeling you're using it on, not a pony. Have you even tested it on one?
I FUCKING KNEW IT! I FUCKING KNEW IT ALL ALONG!!!
No Trixie this chapter?

It's just healing a nosebleed. If we were doing reconstructive surgery, then we'd need to do some research.
There wasn't really a need to place her perspective in this particular chapter, plus characters have been skipped before.
6250427 Image link doesn't work well.
You know I think she got over this a wee bit too fast. Dunno. Last time she had it she was cherishing it.
6250618
While she was protective of it, she wasn't necessarily cherishing it. Remember, Chrysalis only kept her crown because it was something she made herself, and she didn't want anyone else to have it. In her mind, its best place was with her.
The problem with keeping the crown in the two years since her exile was that she wanted to forget her past life while still keeping that crown, but she couldn't have it both ways. The crown would continue to remind her of the old days, no matter how much she wanted to forget them.
In this chapter, Chrysalis makes a decision that she needed to make for a long time: dwell on the past, or live for her future, and the experiences she went through in all the previous chapters (her recent raise, seeing the concern that Cross Hatch had for her health, her opportunity to be signed to a top modeling agency, and slowly warming up to her roommates) makes her choose the latter.
Once she decided that what she has now is more important than her old crown, she decides to get rid of it, and her past experiences all built up to that moment.
6250716 I know what she did. She just did it a little bit faster than I had the chance to see the change evolve before my eyes.
6250736
Oh, well...
6250809 Eh... cut a little bit of my enjoyment sure but... I dunno. Maybe it has to do with the fact that you had the identity of the item hidden. I didn't have the chance to swallow it all in.
A good chapter, now bring the Changelings looking for it.
6252342
Eh, it's been two years, and Chrysalis was on her own for the first year. If they were really looking for that crown, they would've found her by now, especially since the last few months of Chrysalis's time alone was spent with her on a very low love supply.
The changelings most likely gave up on the crown and just forged a new one to give to the new queen when they chose her.
6252504 True, but I kind of think the Changelings would be sore losers over the issue. Plus you could have the fun of a new Queen desiring the old crown and not a new one. Monarchy love there regalia after all.
6252641
Except that's usually the case if you want to associate yourself with the glorious deeds of your predecessors. But since Chrysalis made that crown, she's the only one associated with it. At this point in time, Chrysalis seems to be universally hated by the Changelings. Why would a new queen want to be associated with one who is considered a failure? Even if they had gotten the crown from her and offered it to the new queen, it seems doubtful that she would have even wanted it.
I haven't commented on this before, but Chitin asking for the crown is really just kind of a dick move. Especially considering Chrysalis had already peacefully (if not graciously) surrendered her authority. She had abdicated! And the crown itself doesn't really matter to anyone but her at this point.
The only argument one could make is that Chitin wanted the crown surrendered as a symbolic gesture that Chrysalis would never again aspire to the throne. But again, after working with her for so long, apparently her word wasn't good enough. Cause this is what he said:
The only thing they asked. Which is what she did. Only then did they ask for the crown. One other possible interpretation is that Chitin and the others didn't really care about the crown in the first place. After Chrysalis surrendered the throne, despite the promise that she wouldn't be harmed, they were just looking for an excuse to kick her out violently. Which would be even more of a dick move.
Poor Chryssie.
6260334 They wanted her gone, no matter what they said and most likely buried. Noticed they offered her a place in the next Queens Council? The offer was probably valid until she was out of the Throne Room. I am suprised Celestia didn't use Chrysalis to keep tabs on her old hive. The crown though was a symbol, one Chrysalis created after her first conquest. A new Queen would want the crown until she made her own. After that it's scrap. But short term it's a symbol of continuance.
6260494
I don't think so. After a violent uprising, you don't want continuance with the deposed monarch. You want people to forget that monarch completely. If anything, you'll go back to what was before. It seems that Changeling Queens didn't even wear crowns before Chrysalis, so the new queen would actually make a better statement by not wearing one at all.
It's something called damnatio memoriae by the Romans. You want to erase any evidence of that previous ruler, even their victories. You can't have it both ways, cherry-picking only Chrysalis' early victories to identify with and distancing yourself from the later reign. Doesn't work that way.
And the offer to be on the new Queen's Council was likely insincere from the start. They knew there was a mob outside, and that said mob would attack Chrysalis on sight. They would have gotten rid of her one way or the other. The best Chryssie could have hoped for was to remain under house arrest for the rest of her life. (And that's why there was no real way for Celestia to enlist her as a spy.) A shallow grave under suspicious circumstances would have been more likely.
But upon further thought, I guess there could be one reason for them to want the crown. By putting that crown on the new queen (one time only during her investiture), they could create the illusion that Chrysalis approved of her successor, whoever that would turn out to be. The thought being that this would appease anyone still loyal to Chrysalis. Maybe that was the thought behind it.
Or maybe we're both putting way too much political thought into a comedy story.
6260558 The illusion of a clean succession I think is what the Changelings wanted. To keep any Chryssi supporters happy. Her lifespan after that would be short, and I doubt sweet. The real interesting bit would be if there still on the look for her, and would her attempt into the modeling industry open her up to there finding her. Because there probably are still a few that want her dead, and possible a few who want her back. How would Chrysallis feel if she walked into her room only to find a delegation of Changelings waiting offering to help restore her to power or lead a new break off hive?
6260558
6260870
Eh, maybe, maybe not, but regardless, both of you bring up some interesting and valid points to the whole crown thing. Here's the way I see it:
The changelings wanted a more violent uprising, but Chitin Chalice, the highest ranking soldier, convinced them to try a more peaceful solution for two reasons: One, on the off chance that Chryssie complied, it would just make things a lot easier for everyone. Two, despite the fact that he thinks Chrysalis is no longer fit to rule, he still has some level of respect for her (unlike Amaryllis and the other soldiers that were with Chitin), and still saw some value in her contribution to their "kingdom," for lack of a better word (I don't want to use "horde"), and that's where the offer to be on the council came in.
As for the crown, the way I imagine it, the changelings see the queen as someone whose duty is to serve her subjects (a duty that they thought Chryssie hadn't been fulfilling), and thus the crown belongs not to the queen, but to the subjects, and therefore must be earned by the wearer. When they deemed Chrysalis as unfit to rule, she was thereby unfit to wear the crown, and so they asked (and later demanded) for it to be returned.
I'm kinda tempted to make Amaryllis the new queen, since I've been itching to draw her, and if the new queen were to reemerge, I'd have to come up with a way for her to appear that wasn't totally contrived.
Regardless, I think we can all agree on one thing: Chrysalis got fucked over... royally.
6261441 I think making Amaryllis the new queen would be fun. Then have her decide to kill Chrysallis. And fail and die. Now how would the Changelings react to that?
6261500
Let's not go too far, now.
6261441
Agreed.
I would ask what weaponry is available in this universe but, really I can't. Your not the kinda guy to use a gun, sword, crossbow, etc. for anything, other than plot development. I don't think Adrian or anyone is the kinda guy that sleeps with a .44 magnum revolver under his pillow.
6265584
Yeah, I don't tend to go into the whole thing about weapons technology in my fics, since they aren't relevant to the story.
Personally, I would pretend I am giving them the crown, then destroy it in their faces.
Very cool story, can't wait for the next update. Keep up the amazing work!
Its like drinking your favorite drink, so refreshing~! Thanks for this chapter, can't wait for the next one!
shoulda burned them chrysalis
Aww, they're all happy and together now. Awesome chapter. Looking forward to what comes next.
Yeah, the other changelings are dicks. Because times are tough, they forget all the good ever did.
Yay, friendship IS magic!
