In the novel, Sauron butchered his way from the Dark Tower to Mount Doom, where he came upon the war-party of Gil-galad, Elendil, Isildur, Elrond and Cirdan. Elendil and Gil-galad were slain by Sauron but overthrew him in turn, and Isildur cut the Ring with his father's broken sword.
