This is a story about beginnings and endings, about gods and mortals, about love and death.

Over the past several months, Twilight Sparkle has been translating an old journal. At the onset, the activity simply served to appease the mare's curiosity and to help her learn the Ancient Equestrian language, but she finds the closing entries of the journal to be far more important than she had anticipated. These are the closing entries of the journal of Stargazer, Luna's royal astronomer some 1,000 years ago.

Princess Luna is ready to take on her role as Princess of the Night once again upon the night of the winter solstice. She remains unhappy, though, for her subjects don't seem interested in what the night sky has to offer. Twilight Sparkle must take it upon herself to prove to the princess just how much Equestria loves the stars, and make this the best winter solstice ever.

Three months after Nightmare Moon's attack, Princess Celestia has taken on her sister's duties as ruler of the night. But trying to fulfill those duties is beginning to take its toll on her, and she continues to be haunted by her memories of what happened that night.

This story is a sequel to Discord's Game

In the aftermath of Discord's defeat, the forest village of Everfree begins to rebuild under the protection of Princesses Celestia and Luna. However, Luna grows increasingly frustrated at the ponies' seeming indifference towards her night and seeks more and more elaborate means of drawing their attention. One night, she comes across the secrets of a powerful artifact that, if unleashed, could change the fate of Equestria and undo everything Luna and her sister have worked for.

Alicorn princesses Celestia and Luna arrive in the land of Equestria on a quest to discover who they really are. They find that the land is ruled by the mysterious and despotic Discord, who makes life unbearable for the ponies of Equestria for his own amusement. With the help of the small forest village of Everfree, the sisters set out to dethrone Discord and free the ponies of Equestria, discovering that the most powerful magic comes not from skill or study, but from friendship.

After delivering the "Chronicles of Starswirl" to Twilight, Princess Luna begins a letter to Princess Celestia discussing why the latter has been silent and sullen as of late. There is, apparently, much to discuss between the two.

Something is troubling Princess Luna. With ancient burdens weighing her down even as she attempts to reconnect with an estranged populace, she turns to an old friend for comfort and advice.
