The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Which pony -- mare, specifically -- from the show most deserves punishment?

I'm not talking the sexy kind of punishment, I mean eternal damnation and torment.

If you immediately thought Starlight Glimmer, maybe take a moment to contemplate? Suri Polomare? Lightning Dust? Just a couple examples off the top of my head.

Let me know what you think in the comments. :) Yes, this is for a story.

Reminder that I need a mare. Also, the punishment doesn't have to be eternal, that's just the vibe I'm going for.

The real villain... Starswirl the Bearded.

images2.imgbox.com/74/a7/fOqNS01z_o.png

Personally responsible (in the comics) for the creation of Queen Chrysalis. Dude was uncompromising, self-centered, more focused on heroism than kindness and sent creatures and questionable magical items to Earth instead of proper disposal. (Inter-dimensional littering!)

I'm not talking the sexy kind of punishment, I mean eternal damnation and torment.

Well, crap.

Joking aside, if I had to choose, it’d be Svengallop. For obvious reasons.

Celestia, for doing nothing but foisting her problems on others for 1,200 years.

5321601
Ya not wrong there. Definitely eternal damnation

I was going to say Well-To-Do, but he’s only in the comics, he’s not actually a pony, and he does ultimately get eaten by a hydra.

derpicdn.net/img/view/2015/3/18/852095.jpg

I honestly always felt Chrysalis and Tirek did. Both are entirely cold-blooded brutes who had entirely guilty actions and mind for what they did and kept a brainwashed little kid along for the ride.

Tirek is violent without reason and steals souls, as well as attempting multiple overthrows of Equestria. Chrysalis is a ruthless dictator who resorts to violence against heads of state, ordinary ponies, and has a host of other offenses. Abduction, mind control, and managing to be the closest thing I think is possible to a TV-Y rapist creature thing. The fact that people give her the biggest Draco in Leather Pants treatment of any villain and brush her off as quirky is just absolutely squicky.

There isn’t any atoning for stuff like that, though people have written plenty of good stories about them.

This fandom gets so weird about villains in a variety of ways. But it’s also produced many tales where redemption and forgiveness are actually done right and earned.

Also, by ‘punished’ I’m presuming you mean a character who is truly evil in the show and should be given no quarter. I think all the problems with the other characters (good guys or otherwise) could be solved with talking to, therapy, or normal problem solving/conflict resolution methods.

I’m not including the movie/specials/shorts because I don’t know the characters in those nearly as well.

I'm gonna go Tirek/Chrysalis. Don't see how they could have been reformed. Sombra is a good option as well.

And, you know, they got theirs. Sombra was blown to bits, and Tirek and Chrysalis will spend eternity in stone possibly aware of everything.

Angel Bunny. He got banished to Equestria after killing all those knights by the power of the Holy Hand Grenade.

He hasn't repented, I'm sure of it!

I'll show myself out...

Does Discord count as a pony? Because right up to the last episode it was shown he didn't give much of a damn for morality of any sort and would willingly endanger the entire world just for the lolz. I don't believe that torment does any good whatsoever and wouldn't wish it on anyone for its own sake, but if that would be the cost of preventing a nearly all-powerful, amoral troll from being able to do harm. Yep, that's my vote.

Rainbow Dash's parents should be a top contender... :pinkiecrazy:
More seriously: Spoiled Rich.

The Flim Flam brothers, for hypothetically destroying Equestria.
Although I guess hypothetically destroying the world is less Hell and more this guy's purview:
i.imgur.com/dCSiOuZ.jpg
But Time Jail is eternal, so it is the same.

Tirek and Chrysalis, in that order.

Of those who aren't already serving time in Tartarus? Flim and Flam, for continuing in their inept, unrepentant attempts to hustle everyone they meet, sometimes placing them in danger in the process.

Edit: Maybe I should read things a little more closely, huh? Punishment, yes. Rehabilitation? Yes. Eternal damnation and torment? No. We're literally no better than anyone who is guilty of crimes if we are willing to purposely torment (i.e torture) them. The thought of that just makes me ill.

None. No one deserves eternal torment.

Though Svengallop can be the last one out of Hell's door.

My vote would be Suri Polomare or Svengallop. Neither of them quite gets their comeuppance in a truly satisfying way OR gets reformed.

  • Suri treats Coco like garbage and cheats to get ahead, and ultimately what consequence does she face? Not winning a contest and losing an assistant that she'll probably replace with some other wide-eyed mare. As far as we know, she's still out there, being awful.
  • Svengallop no longer gets to reap the benefits of Coloratura's fame, but the last we see of him is him storming off, apparently concerned and doubtful that Coloratura will be able to go on without him.

Part of me wanted to see Suri's dirty tactics catch up to her and see her reputation go up in smoke, or see Svengallop embittered and trying to rebuild while Coloratura's fame grows to greater heights. I think almost every other villain in the show has gotten their just deserts or at least a big ol' slice of humble pie.

Starlight Glimmer :V

Maybe Twist? Or Fleetfoot. That listhp is hiding something <.<

Send Wallflower through the portal and choose her? Or maybe Tree Hugger?

Don’t listen to me though. As I probably won’t read it because I’m garbage that only reads lesbian shipping that doesn’t result in batponies.

Discord. Directly responsible for the Legion of Doom and the destruction of the Tree of Harmony.

I'd say Tirek, Sombra, and Chrysalis.

I do not see ordinary ponies like Svengallop and Blueblood deserving such punishment.
Sure they are self-centered assholes who couldn't care less if their actions actively hurt a innocent bystanders ability to thrive, as long as it doesn't damage the image that they are trying to build of themselves that is.

But really, are ordinary narcissistic ponies like those i mentioned really deserving of eternal damnation and torment? I don't think so.

5321610
Headcanon not accepted.:ajbemused:

Don't forget the skeevy guy who swindled Pinkie out of her Party Cannon (before Maud intimidated him into giving it back). You know that's not the first time he's pulled a scam like that.

5321626
Pretty much this. While I adore Chrysalis' use as a Team Rocket joke villain or frenemy, her actual canon is devoid of any reason to see her as anything but an unrepentant and horrible person who did horrible things. Same for Tirek. The fandom uproar over their imprisonment struck me as a big ol' joke.

Lightning Dust needs to be scolded firmly.

Starlight was probably mentally ill to the point she wasn't fit to stand trial; Suri Palomare was merely a jerk; Cozy Glow a child.

Lightning Dust? What she did to Scootaloo was attempted premeditated murder.

5321748
I was surprised people wanted them redeemed, but not surprised with the angle of “okay but eternal petrification might not be the best sentence” because there’s at least actual discussion in the second part.

I really like goofy/sympathetic villain stuff too, but then there’s always a story or post that tries to white knight/simp for/whatever the character’s canonical immortality is in the creepiest possible way.

The show has a lot of everyday villains that aren’t exactly what I’d say fits the label villain, so it’s understandable to see stuff that’s more in favor of fellas like Gilda, Blueblood, or even Suri because even if they aren’t NICE creatures, they’re not dark lords and sadistic tyrant queens.

Sombra could use some destruction

I don't think anyone really deserves eternal torment, but Tirek fo' sho'.

Okay, first, I hate you all. >:B

Second, Tirek is currently the winner, but he's ineligible for reasons stated in the first post. Chrysalis is #2, but she's not really a pony and already being punished with stone emprisonment. Svengallop is #3, but also ineligible. The rest all have one vote.

Let's try this again. -.-

5321658
Finally, a good fucking comment.

5321748
The uproar was mostly over Cozy Glow. Arguably, Tirek was also never given a chance to be anything but the bad guy.
Chrysalis, on the other hand, yeah she's just irremediable. The "virus of friendship" scene made that clear.

Also, of course, what Discord did in S9 was at least entrapment.

For me, the crime has to fit the punishment for it to be considered reasonable punishment. Otherwise, it could just be seen as an I hate x and I want to see them punished just because story. There were two quite interesting suggestions already made.

Wanderer's Starswirl suggestion actually has quite a bit of merit. He is, in my mind, the equivalent to Sir Arthur Harris or Curtis LeMay up to the point after Starlight and Twilight rescue Stygian. Someone who uses the claim of fighting for good to pretty much get away with a lot of stuff they really shouldn't have done is, at least, as bad as the supposed evil that they are looking to defeat. Just because you are supposedly doing what you are for what you perceive as the good side does not mean that you can just then do whatever. The problem with this suggestion, in my mind, is that, as late as it may be, Starswirl seems to be finally turning into a better pony.

Then there is The Hat Man's suggestion of ponies like Suri or Svengallop. They are, essentially, the Thomas Edison (Read up on him if you don't believe me. His only actual invention is the word hello. Everything else he stole the credit from those that actually invented said item while paying the person minimally for their work while he got the money off of their inventions. He also did his best to control said people and keep them under control of his scientific publishing house if you will.) or Donald Trump equivalent of Equestria. They go about trying to get whatever they are after with complete disregard to the cost of any others while also using others to get to their target goals. They aren't the only ponies that are introduced to us that are this way. I would argue that Flim and Flam are also this way. They just so happen to try to go about it in the more old fashioned style of traveling con artists. There is a massive moral dilemma with suggestions from this group. Is such punishment truly fair for a sociopath? Is the justified sentence of their actions really eternal damnation? As much as I despise those characters I am not so sure that it is.

Thus, in my opinion, the only ones really worth the punishment are already those receiving the punishment in Cozy, Tirek, and Chrysalis. I very much doubt those are the characters you are interested in writing for or you wouldn't have created this blog post. That said I do have an idea. If you are willing to write something for them you could potentially expand upon something Discord clearly hinted to. That you are still conscious and aware under that stone exterior. What is that experience like? Maybe this has been done but I have yet to see it myself.

I would say Tirek, but since it has to be a mare and someone who is not currently imprisoned in stone...

Lightning Dust could really use some comeuppance too, but nothing like eternal torment. No one deserves that.

5321658
I think I'll second Spoiled Rich

5321838
In our defense, I don't think you specified mare at first.

Which pony -- made, specifically -- from the show most deserves punishment?

Death by typo?:duck:

----

Honestly, I think Cozy Glow? People can say she's a kid all they want, but the reason children are generally shielded is because they lack agency and decision-making capacity. I don't know if we saw any evidence Cozy was naive or otherwise not in control, and she certainly acted with utter malicious qualities in long-term schemes aimed at devastation.

EDIT: I also absolutely passed on the S8 finale, so I don't actually know.

The answer remains Starlight.

No pony else casually brainwashed a whole town and received zero comeuppance.

5321761
I'm sure the tornado was against equestrian law in most places too.

5321838
Is it too late to suggest that all those crazy asshole fans from Fame and Misfortune should be punished then?

5321894

No pony else casually brainwashed a whole town and received zero comeuppance.

Twilight casually brainwashed a whole town and received zero comeuppance.

5321838
If those are the conditions, then I admittedly can’t think of any pony strictly from the show besides Chrysalis and Tirek. There’s a lot of every day baddies but none but those two were truly evil where the result you want would be proportional to their proposed punishment.

The movie/specials/shorts/comics might have a selection of more fitting characters.

If it has to be a mare, then Lightning Dust. There's no way she didn't kill someone. Also, it is fitting for her to experience eternal damnation since she undeniably died at the end of "The Washouts."

Oof. There's tons of ponies that had no on-screen comeuppance for offenses large and small… I would vote for Suri, Lightning Dust (who totally lived, considering Chrysalis survived getting blasted over the horizon at the end of the royal wedding), and Spoiled Rich, but if you're talking eternal or even super-serious consequences I don't think there's anybody that fits the bill…

Take one of these favorite rogues and add to their list of evil deeds. I could totally see Suri being a serial swindler and cheat, like a subtle and calculating version of Flim and Flam lacking any conscience.

5321839
Hardly. Discord considered him a friend before Tirek showed his true colors of using people when
it's convenient.
Also Discord sent them on a series of team building exercises in the Hope's that they could be friends with one another at the very least. They didn't get stoned because they did bad things Discord told them to. It was because Discord forced them to hang out and they empirically rejected friendship and abjectly refused to be anything but pure evil.
All three were also given so many chances.

5321950
None of that actually matters. Entrapment is when an agent of the state makes you commit a crime you weren't otherwise going to.

The pony that inspired the most negative reaction for me, especially relative to what he did, was Zephyr Breeze.

5321878
Shit, no wonder. :facehoof: I blame being at someone else's house.

And uh, you will have your answer if you watch all of S9. <.< I can only guarantee that there are as many great episodes as bad ones, and the finales are kind of worth it.

5321909
Too many ponies, sadly. Their punishment is history forgetting who they were.

5321925
I like this reasoning.

5321946
Oh dear, now I'm shipping them, help...

5322018
Zephyr is specifically why I (tried to) specify mares only.

Because he deserves all the punishments forever. >:B Even Mudbriar is better than he is.

5322050
Hmm... this is a tough one then.

I can’t really think of anyone other than Suri Polomare or Spoiled Rich.

If I had to suggest someone that hasn’t been suggested, it would be Tender Brush. Or rather, “that bitchy racist pony who appeared in the finale.”
derpicdn.net/img/2019/12/7/2214820/medium.png

Considering mares only, I'd go with Spoiled Rich. That she's a pony obsessed with status, who encourages her daughter to attack three fillies that are related to national heroes and are especially close to multiple princesses, shows that she's an idiot.

5322050
Gah now I am too.. but the question is: who’s actually scamming who? All of of them and none of them.

strawberry sunrise you're welcome

5321902

Agreed; but, if Lightning Dust had killed anypony with the tornado, it would have been manslaughter.

The rocket and Scootaloo was, as I say, an attempt at premeditated murder.

5322050

And uh, you will have your answer if you watch all of S9. <.< I can only guarantee that there are as many great episodes as bad ones, and the finales are kind of worth it.

Oh, I watched all of S9 and adored (most of) it.:coolphoto: I took a pass on maybe a quarter of S8 for reasons I'm sure you're familiar with.:pinkiesick:

So... yeah. Cozy Glow, change my mind.

Also worth noting that while Starlight Glimmer more-or-less earned redemption for her misdeeds with Our Town and time travel, she remains an unrepentant kite-flying degenerate and certainly deserves a place on the short list.

5322206
This too.

PresentPerfect

All right! After a day, the standings are:

Spoiled Rich with 5 votes!
Lightning Dust with 4
Suri Polomare at 3
Starlight and Twist (???) with 2
honorable mentions:
Windy Whistles
Fleetfoot
Wallflower Blush
Tree Hugger
Tender Brush
Strawberry Sunrise (she'd like it)

Spoiled Rich and Lightning Dust are very good candidates indeed! Hopefully something will come of this. :) Feel free to leave comments for another day, and we'll see if anything changes.

5322126
I've long had a Trixie/Flim Flam ship idea in the back of my head, but Suri is way worse and therefore perfect. Scams and babies all around!
