Remeber those previous blogs about fanfiction that I posted before? Well, it appears I'm not the only one that thinks there's more to what we do!
Before we proceed further down to the stuff that I'm referring to, I do have something of my own to say about our beloved (and legit!) art; I love Ratatouille. And the reason this is relevant is because it brings forth a phrase that is very true: "Anyone can cook."
Let's tweak it a bit to be even more relevant to what I'm trying to say, so when it comes up, just imagine it says: "Anyone can write." There. That's better.
But now we go to the other quote from Ratatouille which makes my point:
Well, yeah, anyone can, that doesn't mean that anyone should.
Why?
Well, to put it plainly: because it's true.
There are some people that should not be writing at all.
And just to be clear, I'm not talking about those people that have issues with language or grammar. I mean, that can be annoying to some, but the fact is, when they are putting their actual efforts into creating a story, and they REALLY want to improve? Those people deserve to have their stories read, their efforts appreciated and help offered.
Nor does this refer to those that don't take it as seriously as some wish they did, since you can be a casual writer of fan fiction and produce stuff of a range of quality.
I'm not even talking about the ones that write stories of dubious quality and don't care about improving. (Although I don't think much of them.)
Who am I talking about then?
I'm talking about those that write stories simply to annoy and denigrate; the mediocre producers of crap that is funny only to them and their inner circle of like-minded miscreants. Those who think that it's okay to be racist or ignorant and like to throw their crap at people just for the lolz. Those that don't understand the importance of social issues that have plagued and continue to plague society and think that 'making fun of them' in their crude and stupid ways is akin to something worth reading.
Those people should not write. Or if they do so it should not be published. It's not even troll-fic because it's not even thought out. There is no parody or irony; it's simple bashing and stupidity, put into words and hidden behind the excuse that it's "free speech". Well, you just read my free speech about it. And here's more: I don't want to read, see or touch crap like that, nor does my free-speaking-delete-button-pushing-finger. If you have crap like that, spare us and post it away from the rest of humanity. And don't worry too much when you do that; we'll still think you're idiots.
To put it into perspective, Glenn Beck has more common sense than you do.

Okay, I read it. I have already been saying this, and I am not just saying this to be a suck up. If you go around to some of those badfics and see my comments, it will prove otherwise. And screened plum below me is right. You can approve or not approve whatever the hell you want to. Hell, just look at EqD.
I know this is not what FiMfiction is about, but I really think you need to start filtering things a bit more. You know what a bad fic is, and so does every pony else who clicks on it. It would be a blessing to not even have to see that badfic because you had the sad misfortune of looking at it first and was forced to deny it for being terrible.
Free speech doesn't even apply. This is a private website, after all.

I love that reply, it's written in such an entertainingly informative way. Historyfic is my twin brother's new favorite term.
Now, for the second part: I'm a sophmore in highschool, who is looking towards a career in creative writing. Now, that being said, I feel like I should be working on short stories that I can publish into a collection. Instead though, I keep finding myself here, writing short stories; that to be fair, won't get me very far in life. And actually, some of the ideas I put down on here, are things I could have easily translated into an actual short story. So while I do LOVE fanfiction, I love this site, and the people on it, I feel like talent can be... not wasted, but guided here instead of somewhere else. I'm not trying to bash fanfiction, but, sometimes I get the feeling that I should be doing more.

This all too true and I support this with my blood and soul of wanting to take this further on. No more joke fics, just my main focus and there needs to be more serious fics that should be read and noticed. I mean, if you try, that is fine, but you should also want to improve and take some nice criticism.

And also, tooooo true with the first part. I have tried reading things (I wont even deem the word fanfiction appropriate; it's insulting to fanfiction) that are so painful my eyes nearly bleed after two paragraphs. Both for spelling and grammar, and and any semblance of sense or direction. Seriously, I've seen stuff that would make even Discord cry.
That was a singularly awesome quote, probably the best defense of fanfiction I have yet heard, I would love to have that guy as my professor, but I guess I have some pretty good ones, so I can't complain.
I don't see why you don't just put the kabosh on derogatory and hateful fics like the ones you are talking about. Sure I suppose you would still have to read them, at least enough to tell that they are like that, but at least you could get the satisfaction of denying them a place on the site. I am pretty sure that free speech here is what you guys decide it is, and regardless fics of that nature don't deserve a place on FIMFiction.
Just an idea, it'd be kind of funny if you numbered these rants, I'd go to my notifications, "welp, Wanderer is ranting for the seventeenth time, let's check it out."

You should write a blog about your favorite 'Orphaned' fanfics. Ones that have been abandoned, retired, or simply lost to limbo.
I'm of course talking about super classics like 'The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle', 'Equestria's Twilight', 'Sharing the Night', and others.

504745 Yes. And that is the reason why (in my opinion)... if you have a story that simply takes the archetypes of the characters for your use... make it original fiction. If it's something only the ponies can do... keep it as fan fiction.

That professor makes me feel so much better about what I, and many others, do here. Sometimes, I wonder if what I write is worth the time I put into it. Reading this, I now know that any time I sit down to write, I'm doing myself a favor by expressing myself in a constructive way.

btw, let me know if this has been answered but exactly how does the approval system work? Does one admin scan it to see if there are any blatant mistakes (i.e. poor grammar, no formatting, no short and long description...the list goes on) and then pass it off (if it passes the big mistake test) to another admin to check more minute things (i.e. category tags, should it be marked "mature", is this metafiction or not, ect.)
Or does one admin do all of that together?
