Friendship is Card Games: Trixie and the Razzle-Dazzle Ruse

We return to the pony novels this week, and hopefully a better showing from the titular mare. Last time we saw Trixie in one of these, G. M. Berrow was channeling the fandom circa 2011 and making her and Gilda the designated antagonists of the piece. Let’s see what she’s up to this time.

Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

For context, today we got an announcement regarding a new round of pony animation. We have the G4 voice cast, and well...

Yeah, it's not exactly encouraging to an older demographic. Comparisons to Teen Titans Go! abound, and not without cause. Still, I'm approaching it with my usual cautious optimism. If it turns out better than it looks, great. If it's terrible, I'm going to disregard it. There's no need to wail and rend garments; worst case scenario, it's something to ignore.

Remember, the vitriol and hate-watching were part of what made TTG so big.

Also it's not G5 I think some are a little to overly worried

The flip is this?

Honestly, I'm fine with an MLP GO if only because its better than nothing until G5. Fact is TTG isn't even that bad there are certainly better shows out there but I could think of a worse show watch when nothing else is on. Most of the hatred of that show comes from:

  1. The fact that we never got a proper conclusion to the original show and TTG seems to constantly mock the fact that we'll never get it.
  2. Most of the characters losing any of the personality or individuality they had in the original show.
  3. The creators being incapable of understanding what people liked about the original show (they seem to think it was because it was more serious)
  4. And finally CN shoving it down our throats so much it couldn't help but become its biggest show. After all, it's easy to become the highest-rated show when it's the only thing that's ever on.

We don't have to worry about number 1 so as long as these are still the same characters we know and love at their core and it doesn't completely disregard what we loved about the original then this little spin-off could be a decent distraction until G5.

Video: "Somethin' good is coming!"

Also Video: *has 3:2 like-dislike ratio*

Me:

My crappy attempts at humor aside, I think taking on a mindset like that is important. As someone who did spend a lot of time onboard the TTG Hate Train, I can safely say that it benefitted me in no way whatsoever. After all, when all that anger has been spent, what's left?

Nothing. Or, at least, nothing of value.

I'll probably give it a look. If I like it, then good. If I don’t, I'll change the channel—maybe even pull up an old FiM episode if I feel like it. That's all there is to it.

What if - and follow me here - it's good as hell?

I'm giving it a fair shot. My main issue is the toy design. Well, that and Spike having eyelashes.

Doesn't look bad honestly

I'll give it a shot. Doesn't look that bad after a settling period.

Still, I'm approaching it with my usual cautious optimism.

Not that it's particularly relevant, but what do you suppose is the opposite of cautious optimism? Hopeful pessimism, perhaps? I mean, the feeling of "probably going to be bad but I'm still holding out hope" is just as valid as cautious optimism, so it's odd that it lacks an antonymous idiom.

Like I said, it's not relevant, certainly isn't my reaction to this trailer - can't honestly say I have much of a feeling at all on it; might check it out if it turns out well, doubt I'll go out of my way to - I just think it's interesting.

Am I an awful person for liking it.
It's like they put hotdiggitydemon on payroll

I like to say "tentative pessimist." If I expect everything to suck/go bad/bite/explode/melt, I'm either right, or pleasantly surprised. It's a win-win situation... except for the constant foreboding I guess.

The actual cartoons look fine. The singing toys make me want to die. :applecry:

5155071
I'm not sure how I feel about another .5

Like, I still haven’t gotten around to watching all of G4 yet, so at the rate I’m watching, I’ll probably still be catching up by the time G6 launches.

Pardon me for being out of the loop, but--why all the hate for TTG? Art style aside, I was under the impression that it was TT with a little extra humor...

5155146 Too much of the TTG humor is "lol we all styoopid".

5155068 Hasbro execs wanting to cash in on POP-mania and paying the animators to make a cartoon about bobbleheads?

Please be good, please be good, please be good....

It's like I was saying in a chat earlier. It looks fine. Not as pretty, but not terrible. I don't hate it.

Either it'll be decent, or it'll be silly kid's shit and not my style. No big deal.

5155146
CN essentially took a cleaver to the original Teen Titans and butchered what made the show good. I've only seen one episode and that was enough for me to drop it.

I love TTG, honestly it looks awesome

5155121
Nah, you're an awful person for completely unrelated reasons.

I think it'll be cute and fun at least.

5155146
Like Kris said. The bar for the humor is a lot lower and all characters are Flanderized to an extreme level.

5155123

Yeah, that's the problem with that - "right or pleasantly surprised" sounds good in theory but, in reality, the more one expects things to go wrong, the more things they'll see go wrong and the less they'll see go right. And even when they do, they're too concerned with the next thing that'll go wrong to appreciate it.

Still, if you can make the outlook work for you, more power to you.:pinkiehappy:

5155212
So, like FiM seasons 8 and 9, then?

Even tho the designs seem to skew a bit younger, I wonder if the humor might actually aim a bit older. It seems weird having Y7 characters singing along to "Good as Hell". Even today I didn't think "hell" was a word that would get dropped so casually for that demographic.

Also wondering from the presser about the "potions" that Pinkie apparently keeps behind the counter. I can't stop picturing Pinkie as some sort of bartender now.

This is starting to mutate in my head into a ponified Seinfeld / Cheers hybrid.

You know, for kids!

5155223
Whew lad. Not even remotely kek.

5155148
This isn't canon right?

5155278 To the FiM universe? Probably not. To our universe? Well... I have some sad, sad news for you... are you sitting down?

5155280
Oh I'm sitting down on something but yeah... I'm ready...

I'm going to give it a chance if they promise never to do close-ups of Hasbro pony toys again. :rainbowderp:

5155077
Obviously you get the power of the Dark Side at the end of hate

So what we're looking at here is someone not very bright trying to figure out what the characters do on their off time like on TTG, then. My guess is that when they do pivot to G5, the last sound we here is Twilight yelling "LULAMOON!!!!" because she found out who created those silly, exaggerated caricatures of her and her friends.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have concerns, but...

Y'know, maybe it won't be awful. A lot of FiM's better episodes were the slice of life ones, after all, and that's what this one claims to focus on.

So I guess I'll keep an ear out when 4.5 hits.

I'm approaching it with my usual cautious optimism.

Same here.
Hoping for the best.
Prepared for the worst.
But like you said, at worst, it's just something to ignore.

Big Oof

I mean... yeah, if we really want to be fair then we haven't seen much of the actual animation yet. And frankly, the early season slice of life episodes I actually rather preferred to a lot of the later, more adventure focused episodes so...?

...but then again, do we really want to be fair to this? I mean, just listen to the song they play in the background. If anything was ever a red flag it's a song all about getting your hair done and checking your nails. :pinkiesick:

5155078
So it's as good as a plane of eternal torment? :raritywink:

5155105
Clearly the counterpart to cautious optimism is reckless pessimism, which calls for standing at a street corner and proclaiming the end times are here when you spill your coffee.

5155246
I'm actually working on a story where Pinkie tries to convince Meadowbrook to teach her alchemy so she can stock those potions.

“You ain’t makin’ an apothecary, Pinkie, you’re makin’ a juice bar.”
“So?”

There's no need to wail and rend garments;

True, there’s no need.
But I won’t let that stop me.

5155323
I'm still incredibly disappointed there wasn't an episode of GREAT AND POWERFUL ADVENTURES OF THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE with slight heckling from Starlight, Discord, etc.
Either 'fanciful re-imaginings' of To Where And Back Again or a totally new adventure, STARRING THE GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE
Guest starring the princesses!
you know, the cool ones, not purple, pink, or the foal.
also featuring some rural dingalings from horsetown or somewhere that were there for some reason

5155283 Now, it may be hard for you to believe this, but... the people who run corporations? They don't particularly care about how good the company's product is. In fact, most of them can't tell good from bad. All they care about is more money for them. Good product only happens by accident, when a real creative mind slips through the cracks. And that's how Equestria was made.

5155355
I'm now eagerly awaiting this new story with bated breath!

5155398
Oh boy... Still hope the movie and G5 will be better though

5155401 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for getting "bated breath" right!

I'm... concerned, but given how well MLP:FiM turned out, I'm not going to dismiss this out of hoof.

I actually do like those pony toys, with moving heads and all!

5155427
Heh, I try to be careful, especially on this site! I admit I thought it was "baited breath" for years, assuming it was referring to some predator perhaps eating or putting something in its mouth to make its breath appealing to some prey and luring it in. Especially since I'd see that kind of thing in old cartoons when I was a kid, and just thought it was a cartoony take on something that actually happened in nature. Figured it meant waiting eagerly for something like a predator awaiting its prey.

5155946 It does and it doesn't. "Bated breath" is a form of "abated", i. e. stopped. Someone waiting with bated breath is so anxious with anticipation that they've stopped breathing.
