The Day of the Dead Anthology

The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a now-famous tradition from ancient times that has been a huge part of Mexican Culture through the centuries. Like so many things in Mexico, it's influenced strongly by certain aspects of the Aztec people.

It has shaped the way those of us with that heritage look at life and death in many ways, and most importantly on the remembrance of, and honoring the deceased. We traditionally decorate little altars dedicated to the memories of those that passed away… but it's not a somber occasion.

PSA: Using AIs to Write and Publish Stories in Fimfiction

Hello everyone, this is a PSA (Public Service Announcement, for those of ESL) to put to rest consistent questions about using AI to 'write' stories and publish them here. This is not intended as a poll or a request for feedback. It is exclusively a clarification on an already-existing rule.

People ask: "Can I, oh great and powerful D, post a story or chapter that I got ChatGPT to write for me?!"

And the answer, my friend, is... No.

Absolutely not. Not in a thousand years!

    Because you didn't write it.

It is not your creation. You are NOT the author. In fact, you are the opposite.

There seems to be some confusion when interpreting the following rule:

    Don’t Post (Content)

    Phishing Awareness

Have you ever found yourself in a situation like this?

And then you magically find yourself in a suspiciously familiar site, except that you're not logged in, and it requires you to do so?

Well. Don't log in. This is a scam, and a cheap one at that.

There've been recent attempts to obtain Fimfiction users’ personal data, like passwords and/or emails through links like the one I'm making fun of above. And a distressing amount of people don't seem to know what phishing attempts are.

If you HAVE entered a site like this and put in your data, make sure to follow these basic steps at least.

All Our Best [Royal Canterlot Library]

As should be obvious from 15 months without a feature, life has taken the Royal Canterlot Library curators in different directions. While there’s still plenty of awesome stories being written in the My Little Pony fandom, we’re no longer actively working to spotlight them, and it’s time to officially draw the project to a close.

Thank you for all of your support, suggestions, and comments over the years. We’re grateful to have been able to share seven years of exemplary stories with you, and give more insight into the minds behind them. In the spirit of the project, please keep reading and recommending fantastic fics to friends—the community is enriched when we all share what we love.

    Reunions: A Swapped Roles Contest!

Okay guys here's something fun presented by Nitro Indigo.

Presented by me, I guess, but I digress.

Last year, I (Nitro Indigo) noticed that there was a surprising lack of roleswap fanfics on this site. To fix that, I decided to run a roleswap contest over the summer themed around secrets. While it didn’t get many entries, it nevertheless attracted the attention of some big authors and was the origin of two of my favourite fics. Overall, I think it was a success, so I’ve decided to run another one!

    Minor Rules and Reporting Update

Hope everyone is enjoying the new year.

Some small changes have been made to our rules as well as to the reporting process.

    Rules

"No attacks directed at individuals or groups due to race, gender, gender identity, religion or sexual identity."

This better clarifies our previously ill-defined hate speech rule and includes groups as well as individual attacks.

"No celebration, glorification or encouragement of real life criminal activity."

This includes past, present and potential future crimes.

    Jinglemas 2019

There's truly no time like the holidays. What's better than copious amounts of food, quality time with family and friends, hearing the sweet sound of Trans-Siberian Orchestra on repeat, and unmanagble financial stress from our capitalist overlords?

    Gift exchanges of course!

Still thinking about it, though will likely bow out due to prize money being involved (I know, I'm crazy like that :derpytongue2:)

I am going to take out first, second and third. Like a boss. :moustache:

If I wasn't writing a multi-part fic on my own, I'd give this a go (as long as it doesn't involve shipping, because I'm terrible at that). I'd probably not enter for the money, though.

Hmm... Sounds interesting enough to me. Depends on the prompt, though. But hey, who needs a reason to write something crazy?

Oh my god, 100$? Seriously? Nice :)
I like to write fanfictions, which are usually the worst ones, but I'll give it a try - 1st thing is the hardest - what am I going to write about...

Sounds fun to me.

You can count me...possibly in!

How will you know if someone is going back to their stories on multiple devices to rate it higher? How will you know if a troll is voting all stories but his own 1-star?

Depending on the prompt, I'mma give this a go.

But I want to ask: are we allowed to ask others for help with our story? Like pre-reading it or giving us ideas for bits of dialogue?

Hmmmm, interesting. I may try this out.

Sounds good, but unfortunately I'm finishing my first story and then continuing my second story after making all corrections to my first one. Otherwise I would give it a go.

The system will be set up to send you to random stories to vote in which do not have the author listed. Links provided will be unusable by other people.

I would give it a shot, but I write slow as hell. Plus, I don't really want to be involved with prize money and taxes and such.

So what this announcement is saying is...one of the people that already has a story up about 3k-10k words long thats already put up is subject to enter the contest? Can the story continue its story line after the contest is over or does the story have to be one chapter to say the least?

That's why there's a story prompt, to stop people using existing stories ( and to give a nice even playing field )

mite be cool :o

I like how you seem to have set things up as best as can in order to avoid abuse on the ratings. My only concern is the part that in the rules that says "Must not be posted publicly before the competition starts." Am I just misreading how that works, or should 'starts' be replaced by 'ends'? Because I thinking it would be hard and/or silly to publish a story for the contest before the contest begins, when the story is using a story prompt (which by the way I love, things like that always get my creative juices pumping).

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this. Best of luck to everyone else who enters, and a huge thank you to those involved in hosting it!

Hmm... interesting.
Where do we submit them? Will we just use FimFiction? Do we have to be anynomous or is it going to be read anonymous? Is there an age limit?

Yeah sorry it ought to say "end" really.

11175

They will be marked with a special tag on Fimfiction, and when the competition starts they'll either all be moved under a "Feb Write Off" author name, or I'll be coding something to just hide author names on those stories. Either way, you won't know who wrote anything.

Also, when will we know when the contest has started?

I really want to do this. I really don't care if I win any money, but it would make me so happy if by some act of Celestia I get on at least the shortlist.:rainbowkiss:

I'll be making a new post with the prompt on it on the 13th.

Time to be less lazy and continue writing. :)

Hm.... well if I enter and win could I just get you to donate my money to charity?

knighty

11181

Nothing stopping you doing it yourself.

11184

Why exactly?

Will Conversion Bureau Universe stories be accepted?

knighty

11187

The only thing you have to follow is the prompt.

11186
Prize money means giving up real-life information about oneself - that`s a showstopper for many netizens. Also, some of us happen to live across the globe and don`t have easily accessible means to cash that check in.

Just a thought - if you could provide authors with option to have money donated to some charity cause instead of having to cash it in themselves, it would be much more enticing.

When the whole competition is over, are you allowed to publish your story on your profile?

11190
Yes that's what I was going at when I said can you just donate the money.

knighty

11190

Sure, there's nothing I have against that.

11190
I second that motion. In addition, some writers think receiving money to be against their morals. They do it for the sake of writing, not for getting money.

I'll be doing this for the fun!

If the prompt includes shipping or Daring-Do, I'm not doing it. I'm working on 3 stories right now, but if this is an easy prompt, I'll try. It's probably not trollfic, but I'm still crossing my fingers:pinkiecrazy:

11166

:pinkiehappy: Awesome! That was my only doubt. Set up just like Ludum Dare :pinkiecrazy:

11194
Sehr gut. Ve shall vait till it`s time to sharpen the quills and unroll the parchments, then.

Hmm, I might as well give it a whirl. Will be intriguing to write some, I assume, clean fics for once.

Mmm... I think Ill opt out. Prize money isn't really my thing.

Interesting.
I suppose I could try to write it.

Sure, I'll give it a go. Nothing like some friendly competition to get the mind jogging!:ajsmug:

you may need a lot of judges - be strict on your criteria for failure/non-entry. I'm interested, I might participate.

Oh it. is. on. :duck:

Ehm... Mabey next time:derpytongue2:

Are we allowed to have prereaders?

Prepare your hindquarters, other authors.

11179
Will said post have a banner like this one did? I'd hate to miss it. It sounds like fun!
