YET ANOTHER reminder about bookshelves you should REALLY keep to yourselves. (Also, a reminder about the Tomodachi hiatus) · 8:35pm Jul 8th, 2016

WARNING: Rant incoming.

(User Name Withheld) added 友達は魔法少女 ~FRIENDSHIP IS MAGICAL GIRLS~ to Dead Fics

Do you people have any idea how much I don't want to bother writing when I find shit like this in my notifications?

If you're gonna make bookshelves like this, make them private so I don't have to see this shit.

And since evidently there are people who are just now reading this story and don't know WHY it's been on hiatus for over a year now:

As I mentioned back when I put it on hiatus, I won't be going back to this story until after I finish writing Persona EG. Persona EG and Tomodachi are both major projects with a lot of intricate planning involved, and it's a lot harder to jump between two major projects than it is to jump from a major project to an off-the-cuff, seat-of-my-pants story like Oops!, Comes a Crossover, or whatever else I need to get back to.

And, just to state it again as I said last week in my status blog: right now, writing has been bumped way down on my priority list, behind gaming and anime, so my output won't even be as high for a while in any case. This doesn't mean my fics are dead or abandoned. It just means I'm doing other things. It doesn't mean I've stopped writing entirely. It just means I don't spend as much time writing right now.

But when I open my notifications and see shit like this? It doesn't inspire me to say "you know, I've watched enough One Piece for today, I think I'll write now." It has the exact opposite effect.

So seriously, keep your "dead fic" bookshelf shit to yourselves, people. I'm sick of seeing it.

Would it cheer you up if it said "Living Fics"? :pinkiehappy:

please don't scream at me.

well tell you something they should keep it to themselves but dead fics could mean something else right im on your side but on no ones side at the same time

Good thing I don't have one, huh?

4078159 yea good thing i have rated shelves like E, T, M

Mine is called 'Stuff I'd like updated' to avoid any misunderstandings. Even still, it's listed as private, because I know how much authors hate update questions, myself included, and that's what it would feel like.

That is wrong. I get it has been a quite some time since, but still. That is just wrong.

At least you kindly put a Hiatus tag, the amount of Incomplete stories I'm following that haven't been updated in over a year is crazy. :(

[edit] And then when they do update, since it's been so long I've most likely forgotten what the hecks going on, and since I have trouble reading the same story twice, it ends up just sitting there unread.

Why even have a folder for "dead" fics? I could get wanting to know if a fic updates after a lengthy hiatus (since fics have returned after over a year hiatus), but if you assume that it's dead, then you should also assume its not going to be updated.

Passive-aggressive prodding. Any monkey can see that you're not dead or abadoning ponyfic, but that person doesn't want to backread your blog posts (which, admittedly, you have a metric fuckton of; your blog output has to equal your horseword output by now) or drop a politely-worded PM in your box asking the relevant question, so an oh-so-subtle shelf name is clearly the solution to the problem.

Personally, if I were to have a folder like that, I'd title it Frankenstein.

That way I'd be justified when my first comment on a new chapter was, "It's alive! ALIVE! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

But as far as bookshelves with discouraging names, I'm right there with you. I've lost count of the number of times I've had my stories added to shelves like that...and it's really depressing.

Mine is just On Hiatus/Cancelled. I go by what's on the fic.

4078176 There IS a search function for blogs, it's just that most people don't know how to use it. But yeah, I can see not wanting to crawl through my blog for notes on story updates. Even so, prior to today Tomodachi was labeled as "on hiatus until further notice", and today I updated it to say "on hiatus until Persona EG is completed". So there's really no excuse.

(And yeah, I blog a lot, but I have a lot to blog about, plus the daily OOCSST thing. :pinkiecrazy:)

And to add this, I recently had one of my stories added to a bookshelf called "Terrible Fics". I don't care about that, but don't make it public. Why someone would want a bookshelf that has stories they think are awful is beyond me, unless they want to make people feel bad about themselves or think that their word is golden and that everyone should kiss their feet just because they "have the courage to tell people their fics are bad". If you don't like something, dislike and move on. Don't be petty.

I think that they may have put it in a dead fics folder because a large majority of stories that go on hiatus for an extended period of time don't ever come back out of hiatus but the authors also don't want to label them as cancelled.

I bet it'd be awesome to see a folder with a title that says "Fics that are still Kicking".

4078210 Yeah, that's abusing the site features to passive-aggressively insult authors. :twilightangry2:

4078215 That's still no excuse for making a public bookshelf like that.

4078221 Yes it is. I wouldn't mind if they were private, or even unlisted, and even I had a private folder one time just for that, long gone now, but I made it private. They would not know about it.

Yet another reason why I stick with the single, default "Favorites" bookshelf.

Until next time...
Anon e Mouse Jr.

This is why I just stick with the default stuff. If I like it, I follow it, if it takes a while to update, fine, authors have lives, authors can't make a living off of Fimfiction, that's the whole POINT. If I like it, i just wait.

The only folder I publicly show is "It Took me THERE..." and that's for stories that made me feel... things.

This sort of stuff pisses me off too, and it doesn't inspire more writing. So I feel your pain. Just take your time, and get back to work whenever you feel best. You're my favorite writer on this site for a reason.

4078362 Aww, shucks.

And yeah, like I said, I haven't stopped writing, I'm just spending more time doing other things. I actually meant to get a lot of wriitng done this week, it's just that I kept getting sidetracked by summer anime premieres (I have found, to date, 14 new shows to follow this summer--all since Saturday. @_@ That's twice as many as I was following in the spring season.)

"Shit I Like" is the name of my favorites bookshelf, because shit is just an open term and refers to anything.

And this is why I never went beyond the "Favorites", "Read Later", and "Tracking" bookshelves that I have by default.

Can't you already search by last update in a bookshelf already? I thought about making a bookshelf for dead fics, but it seems like so much effort for no real reason...

This is exactly why I have my "Not-Quite-Favorites" bookshelf under "Private". Never know whose feelings you might inadvertently end up hurting.

Wow, that's rude.

I don't actually have any bookshelves, but if/when I do they'll all be private on general principle. I can't imagine anyone cares about my reading list.

4078187 wow six dislikes your follows hate me with a passion

4079436 Well you did kinda say something REALLY stupid :twilightsheepish:

4079446 i was just saying didn't need to get all the hate dead fics could mean and they probably put it their by accident

I myself have 2 public shelves and 2 regularly used private ones:
Favorites is my public shelf for stories I really like and are at "worst" a low to mid Teen rating.
NSFW is my (semi-recently) public shelf for stories I really like but are NSFW. (This shelf is somewhat disappointingly far larger than the Favorites one.)
Tracking is a private shelf for fics that are disappointingly high in typos or I'm still not sure if I like or not.
Read Later is a private shelf that "does what it says on the tin"

Right this moment I have 2 other shelves, one for the eventuality of me getting something written and published here (How much longer must I wait for the non-pony version Knighty?), and the other is a series I'm still somewhat considering reading at some point who's author just HAD to use a dozen different stories instead of just having a dozen chapters in the same story.

Man, whoever did that is an asshole.

4079449 Man, you need to work on your grammar skills. It's no wonder you got many dislikes.

4080482 ......... Alright
