So, I am currently at school, working in one of the open labs. Having finished with an assignment, and deciding to take a break from my work, I was working on the next chapter of Your Human and You. After working on it for nearly an hour, I decided to step out of the computer lab and quickly grab myself a drink. At the school I'm at, this is a common occurrence: people will leave their computers running while they go to the bathroom, answer phone calls, and get drinks because people generally DON'T mess with your stuff.
It would appear that that was not the case today.
After getting my beverage, I returned to my computer to find that someone had deleted the entire chapter while I was gone. In its place was the simple sentence "Being a male that loves my little pony is a sin, you faggot". Needless to say, I was peeved that someone would not only touch my work, but insult me as well. Seeing as GoogleDocs has a history function, I decided to forgive it and simply reload a previous saved revision from the file's history. That's when I noticed something that, quite frankly, caused me to snap.
The bastard had not only deleted the chapter's contents, THEY HAD DELETED THE FILE ITSELF FROM MY GOOGLEDRIVE!!! They had opened another document in order to leave me a message. The entire chapter is now completely gone for good; there's no saving it. 10,000 words. Gone. Just because one person had to be an asshole.
Of course, I asked around to see if anybody had seen anything, but since I was sitting in the back of the room, and there was barely anybody within the open lab, nobody had seen who did this incredible callous act. Sure, there are perverted bronies out there that give the rest of us bad names, but it's people like you, sir or madam, that make closet bronies scared to come out.

Luckily, I have a backup of the chapter saved on a portable hard drive, but I'm still out +4000 words. I'll try and get caught back up, but this may cause the next chapter to be delayed more than I originally projected.

A good habit I have is to lock my computer no matter what. Even at home when I know I'll only be gone max 2 minutes I still lock it. Better safe than sorry.

Oh shit... Sadly, I have quite a few of such people in my university group. They tend to make everyone who doesn't act like "they should in a normal society" quite miserable.

Think of who knew about what you were writing and who might have done it. Who knows, maybe you can get a revenge or at least know what to expect from this "person" in the future.
P.S. on the bright side, you know exactly what to write and you still have all other files intact. He\she might have deleted all your drive for what it's worth. Just relax for now and start again when you are feeling better

Considering that it was a room full of computers, I would assume there are cameras? It is possible that you could get the school to look at the footage and find out who did it that way. People such as this deserve to be punished, not only is this a violation of privacy, but is can also be considered destruction of property and harassment/bullying. I believe the last things are considered crimes?

I really hope you can get your file back from the Google support service that 2511880 pointed out. I really haven't started YHAY yet but I know writing is hard (well, for me it is).
It's so sad how stupid people can really be and I will possibly never understand the logic behind that person's bull***t way of thinking. 2511829 - Please do make a habit of locking down you computer (Windows + L key for Windows) - you will save yourself a lot of problem in the future (imagine the same happening with some secret documents related to your work [or, heavens forbid, the sequel to YHAY
]. Never ever leave your computer unlocked. Not now, not ever!
There is something much worse though - are you SURE noone has installed a rootkit onto your machine? You weren't there so you cannot be sure. I would treat this as a high-level security incident and changed all important passwords (INCLUDING THE FIMFICTION ONE and your email!!!). Also I would scan the computer with a quality anti-virus and some rootkit removal software (e.g. Gmer).

There's little I hate as much as having to start something again from scratch - I've quit personal projects over less. (ps please do not do this ^^;)
When I was much younger and my fandom was aligned with Pokémon rather than Ponies, I was part of a quite thriving message board. We had a huge amount of RP going on that board, the product of years of effort, twenty or thirty major threads, hundreds of thousands of words, and myself and several others were in the process of novelising some of it into proper fanfic form to post. The world settings, characters, and friends I made there influence my online and offline life to this day.
Then some asshole got onto a moderator's account and wiped nearly the whole thing. 95% of everything got deleted, including the entire RP section, and everything we'd written. Nobody had thought to make significant backups.
The place never really recovered from that, and fell apart shortly afterwards. I couldn't bring myself to finish most of the RP-based fics I'd started, and most of them ended up lounging in my fanfiction.net account in frozen perpetuity. (And 11 years later, I still get the occasional "Are you going to continue this?" which is nice, if depressing.)
I have absolutely no patience for this kind of destructive behaviour. I'm honestly just glad they didn't tear up the rest of your google drive while they were there...

2511977 That's the backup one. I uploaded that to make sure I actually had a backup before I made the blog. Otherwise, this blog would have been a different tone.
Not to mitigate your frustration, but this is why I use Windows Key+L. It's a lot less likely that somepony will mess with your stuff if the computer is locked out. (It also helps if the open lab requires student IDs to access.) Still, that fucking asshat!
Maybe not worth it, but I'm sure the lab has cameras. You could porbably ask the head if they can see who it was.

2511952 - please make sure to log on to your Google account and test if noone has tampered with the settings and (if you use that) that your mobile phone and additional recovery account is correct. The attacker could have done a much more malicious thing than you think. Also make sure to test for any mail forwarding rules (e.g. forward anything to scumbag@iamanidiot.com).
Even if you are sure he/she could not do anything of that magnitude, please do test it regardless. This will make me sleep better knowing that one of the best Fimfiction Authors is safe

2511991 I went through everything throughly before I made the blog. It doesn't appear that the person did anything else. No emails were deleted or forwarded. No new forwarding emails were added. The password hasn't changed (and I don't have my phone info log in anyways). Nothing was added, and all my other files appear to be untouched.
I am going to be keeping a close eye on my account, though, just in case.
Best of luck and I hope you are able to recover the work. I've lost hours of work, and the attempt the second time never comes out right. But either way, the idiot who did that may profess to be Christian, but he's not. Hatred like that is NOT Christ like.
