Site Post » Hello from California · 6:42am Apr 14th, 2012
So that wee bit of downtime for the last....2 hours or so was us moving servers....again! We're now on an even shinier box which should blitz through Fimfiction like a hot knife through butter.
But we've also fundamentally changed a vast amount of the site's inner workings. Consequently, there are going to be bugs, I can assure you there will be ones we didn't find.
So please let us know what's up below, and we can work on fixing it.
Massive thanks to Xaquseg for being the central pillar behind making the change happen smoothly. Wouldn't be the same without him! Go throw him some thanks.
Edit: The SERVER is in California btw, not me. Just thought I'd save any confusion...
Indeed, is it sunny over there?
Hmm, faster server? Brilliant! That means less down time for us right?! I can't stand it when my favorite source of entertainment is down.
70041
It's sunnier here.
<--Arizona
70041 No. It's raining and cold. It sucks.
idk if it's just me, cuz I thought you guys already fixed this problem. The site has been asking me to login any time I switch devices. Earlier today when I was uploading some edits to a chapter, it didn't save anything and tried to refresh to the homepage. Fortunately, I do my work in a word processor so I didn't lose anything (and I keep updated copies of everything in at least 3 different locations). It redirected me to an error 502 page after trying to load the page for a solid minute. This was around 15:00 US central time (3pm). It hasn't done it since then, but it still asks me to log in again when I switch devices
70041 Yeah, it's quite cold and rainy down here in California.
70053
Yeah, that's been happening to me for a while.
Anyway, it's 54 degrees here in New York
Might I toss up that the link to the chatroom on the main page is broken?
I use the desktop version on my phone, and since yesterday, I haven't been able to login. When I enter my username/password, it refreshes the page instead of logging me in.
I can't seem to import any new chapters from GoogleDocs
70041
Sadly, not really.
Ugh I really wish it would rain more here in Cali.....
advanced search is entirely fucked up as in you click it and it creats a void box (just background color) where it should be. grats on the new server though
You probably know already, but it seems like there are missing pictures on the site. Like the new status icons on the Manage Stories page, and the avatars for the staff on the FAQ page. Haven't found any real glitches so I'll leave that for others to find.
Congrats on the new server!
I had a bit of a problem updating a story, where it wiped out what I saved when I published it. The problem was solved when I saved after publishing though.
Well, it's raining where I'm at in SoCal right now.
Whoo California~! Too bad it's so friggin' rainy.
Welcome to California! Ye had better have a good time!
Oddly, the first slot of one of my Favorites Galleries on my user page isn't showing. I tried editing the module and swapping a different story in and back out, but no luck. Not a big deal, but kind of weird.

View mature checked?
Hey! For the record, shabam, I enjoy a good, foggy day at the beach!
70107
Ahahah, oops Sorry.
Silly cookies.
Edit: The irony is, I must have chosen something else mature when I tried to replace it!
There are some sunny beaches, but those are usually (and unfortunately) in relatively smoggy areas.during the winter, those areas tend to stay warm, and the smog lifts, so that's not a problem...but you usually have to fly there from the bay area. But heck! You can always go up to Taho and ski a bit!
Or check out the hills, the chaparral, the grasslands, the mountains, the coastline, L.A. (Smog City, from what I remember. Maybe it's gotten better? I haven't been there for a while.), the bay...heck, we've got it all out here!
Desert...okay, I think I've listed most of the terrain I can remember. And if we're lucky, we might get a good thunderstorm. I can almost smell it on the air! Ahhh...I live for a good storm. Wind, heavy rains, thunder, lightning, hail, sleet...it's quite amazing, really.
Never know what your gonna get in California could Rain could be Sunny Or possibly Snow :P
It is not sunny in California right now. You should have come here in December all the weather is bucked up were getting all our December rain in APRIL and we had sunny warm weather in December-February
oh and I live in Northern California and San Francisco is better than LA
Yay server hanging out with me :D
Encountering problem: I can connect to FimFic just fine on my phone, yet my computer won't allow me to access the website. Any help?
The only bugs I've found are old ones, not new:
1) The search on the "Read it Later" page is borked. you have to manually add "&read_it_later" for it to work as expected
2) The Dashboard sometimes gets a story stuck in the "Unread Story Updates" list, even when it has been 100% read. The story does not appear in the unread favourites, just the dash.
I did also see a bunch of question marks in all stories, but that was corrected before I could report it.
Argh!
The blog thing is on the right again.
Bu atleast the strories aren't all crushed this time.
THERE'S SO MANY BUGS
WHAT DID YOU DOOOOOOOO!
70138
What are the bugs? I didn't experience any except when every now and then I'll get 'sticky control keys' so like... if I'm typing and I put I, I'll get the italic things. Dunno whats up with that, but it's only minor and not that much of a hassle. Other than that, I'm glad the servers are faster now! Was sad that my source of writing was down for the time being though. Probably worth it though!

Switching webservers can have a number of unintended effects due to differing versions of Apache, PHP, Databases, etc, especially on sites like Fimfiction that were (I believe) coded from scratch and only ever tested in the target environment—though that means they should be easier to fix too, rather than looking for a fix from your open source CMS people and getting laughed at for using a *.0.0 version of PHP even though that's what came installed on your server...
Bitter? Me?
Trying to figure out why the cover for my story won't change...
70041 No, but it's always sunny in Fillydelphia. I'm sorry. I don't even know, I'm in Maryland.
70126
Have you checked to see if any security software is blocking it? It was for me (specifically the new IP address was on a blacklist).

70053
The same thing happens to me (502 Gateway Error; 504 Gateway Time-Out), except it's near 9:00 PM EST.
Right now it is 43 degrees and slightly cloudy, high 70's, sunny.
For some reason I was not e-mailed when one of my favorite stories updated even though the get email updates thing was checked...
70050 Could be worse
Could be tornado-y like good ol Texas
70041
In good old England its...
Well it's not raining for once.
Well, I'm gonna be in Cali in a few months!
70198 Or like Oklahoma!

We had a twister here in Ireland this morning!
70213
Really?
Which Ireland?
The British bit or the other bit?
70214
East Coast, not Northern Ireland.
My mum called me down to look at a video on youtube posted today. A Twister, touching down off the coast of Wicklow!
My initial reaction was: WAT
But then... I was still like: WAT
70215
Wow.
Atleast it didn't hit England.
70216
It wasn't serious, but on the bright side, it brought snow!
70218
Yay.
Snow!
