This isn't a pleasant story. In telling the group about what happened through the medium of this blog, I'm hoping to make a few people think. Passing on the details of events -- or rather, mostly doing so. Because in writing this, I'm not going to include any names. Not just yet, anyway. Every so often, logging in to my Patreon account will generate a popup: this is generally the site trying to tell me about a new feature. In this case, I've been given the ability to write posts which only members on the 'Free' tier would see. Spike, through All the Generations, still exists. Which given rumors, and depending on marketing returns, will there be a Spike in if there is a Gen 6 etc, given their marketing have fallen into the trap of it can only advance if its bigger, better, larger, more expansive etc.
Spike is still a Dragon. At least the We cant have difference as that would make them not like us crew hasnt killed off this story like they killed off the Oompa Lumpas and many others.
Oh sun and moon, what is that? I thought, maybe I'll just wait until G5 is done, pucker up and binge the thing ... but every screenshot of the actual show post-movie tells me it's best to simply ignore its existence.
Dragons in general in G5 were something of a disappointment, design-wise. In G4, just about every dragon's look was unique, and there was a whole host of variations in shapes and body-builds. In G5? Palette swaps, basically. Like, I get it; 3D models are a lot more time-consuming to make, so copy and paste when you can to save time...but still :/
When Rarity passed, Spike could no longer see beauty in the world, so he asked Twilight for an ugly stick, and the first thing he used it on was himself.
5767915 *sadbronysounds* The second half of G4 could be very hitn miss in terms of the writing ... but especially for the older viewers who'd grown up with jap anime and who'd gained the ability to tune out too over the top or annoying elements, there were still lovable characters and a base level of quality to enjoy. It's sad they don't even try to make a good show that gets ppl interested and invested in it without the constant nostalgia baiting.
Cutting corners by using modified pony models for the dragons.
It's probably why the other G5 dragons have manes and pony ears - to hide how bulbous their heads look without them. The problem is that Spike has a canon appearance that severely clashes with the new aesthetic and 3D model.
It could certainly be better, yes. But I can't hold it against the animators when they were clearly working with not so much a shoestring budget as a dental floss one.
5767902 Spike is to My Little Pony as Cid is to Final Fantasy. I take comfort in that.
Post-movie G5, it seems, has an almost immaculate propensity for stabbing itself twofold on the double-edged sword of being G4's direct continuation: saying too little of its predecessor, then saying all the quote-unquote "wrong" things whenever it finally dares to speak of it.
For some inexplicable reason, I can't even say I actually hate this. Fade me.
5767936 G5 has the distinct disadvantage of having to *buy* any G4 likenesses or characters that it wants to use due to fun with licensing, so this "Spike" has to look a lot different than G4 Spike or it will cast an evil spell that summons hordes of lawyers. Ick! Terrible creatures.
Ok I can admit it’s not the greatest redesign but compared to some other redesigns over the years it’s not that bad and changing a 2d design into 3d isn’t easy if you’ve ever seen Be Cool Scooby Doo you know what I mean about redesigns I watched one episode of that said nope can’t watch something with that character design compared to that Scooby Doo redesign this version of spike is a masterpiece
Look at it this way. MLP already embraced the concept of the multiverse with Equestria Girls. Every inconsistency and hiccup like this just makes it easier and easier to accept G5 as an alternate parrallel timeline and conclude that the Mane 6 and Equestria we knew, saw and invested in probably turned out fine.
Honestly, the spines could probably do without purple splotches but otherwise I don't mind the visuals for this, though Dragons as a whole are a bit sub-par for my generally positive opinion of G5 aesthetics (writing is another question). He's aged by centuries and that's going to mean a lot of change for a Dragon.
Look at what they’ve done to mah boi
Two thing to be glad of though.

Eugh.
Spike has physically grown; Torch looked very similar back in G4. His bipedal design from the Last Problem was apparently done for fanservice.
Even I felt bad for him.

Eh..... compared to the plot, continuity, & character problems, it's trivial.
Of course, that's like saying "Compared to Chernobyl, Three Mile Island was trivial "

Seems like they ended up not delivering with a lot of the actual quality that was present in G4.
They also seemingly tried to make up for it with constant callbacks to G4...
It's always a shame to see something I love get commercialized
G5 once again shows that budget 3D will always look so much worse than cheap 2D.
5767913
3 mile island WAS trivial, in terms of it being a nuclear disaster. It was a public relations disaster.

WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO GIGA-CHAD SPIKE?!?!? and why does he look like a girl?

Looks more like one of those weird vinyl troll collectables if you ask me^^

(Prior to G5, Applejack shared this seat)
Bro went from being the fifth Pillar Man to being a background member or Josuke's group

According to the Internet, the NRC says Three Mile Island won't be completely decommissioned until 2079.
ÌDK if G5 will still be around then.
Ok but compared to Giga Chad spike? It's fantastic

I mean, technically...

He looks like the ugliest possible version of Spyro the Dragon.

The "Summon Lawyers" spell is a VIP ticket to 'ell. Use it just once and your destination is assured.
Ah, one of the pitfalls of the "TV series based on a movie looks to be in a poorer quality than the movie" trope.
Honestly, Spike's voice threw me off the most. Way too deep for my liking, even if it has been millennia.
Either way...thanks, Discovery Family! Hope you can give back the MLP assets you own before your demise sometime in the front half of the century.

Why is he so scrawny?! Looks like he never grew out of the awkward gangly teenage form he had in Secret of My Excess.
Spyro-ass lookin motherfucker

What’s this discount Spyro doing here?

Time (and Hasbro) has not been kind to poor Spike...
5767998
He's infected.
He looks like if Spyro sawed off his horns and got some sort of nasty fungal infection on his wings and crest. With extra moose nose thrown in.
He looks like what happened if you asked a really glitchy AI to draw an adult Spike.
That word is not strong enough. The image fails to convey the travesty against eardrums that occurs when he speaks.
