The prince finally completed the potion on the night before the Crystal Fair. The recipe was short and simple, but very powerful. He decided to give the princess the potion the next night- during the clamor of the Fair, she would never notice.
Immediately, the princess fell in love with the prince and the two were married, but the potion was even more powerful than the prince could have known.
For a time, no pony knew there was anything wrong, but it became apparent that neither the prince nor the princess was quite right anymore. Neither cared for anything except to be with each other, even if it meant the kingdom might fall. The princess's young dragon companion began taking up the every day work of ruling, but it was too little, too late. The kingdom fell into disrepair and eventually just... disappeared.”
It was considered the greatest and most tragic love story of the time, but it was not just a story. No, for the Prince and Princess, it was very real...

Here's my prediction for what is to come (But feel free to correct me if I'm wrong):
Cadence finds out about the love potion (Which I hope will be soon) and goes off on Silver Scales (with hopefully lots of Cadence hitting and screaming at him) for giving her the worse type of date rape drug ever. She annuls their marriage and forbids him from ever going near the Crystal Empire again. The bitterness in his heart transforms him into King Sombra and he begins to conquer and enslave the Crystal Empire. He is eventually defeated by Luna and Celestia but not before his curse upon the empire, leaving Cadance as the sole remnant. The regal sisters take Cadence to Canterlort where she stays with them. Many many years pass and she eventually becomes foalsitter to Twilight Sparkle and is aquainted with her brother Shining Armor. As time goes on, Shining Armor grows into a fine stallion and the two fall in love, leading to the events of A Canterlot Wedding.
I'm also guessing that Cadence loses her memory regarding the Crystal Empire. Either she did it to herself to forget what Silver Scales did to her or King Sombra did it.
