I'm imagining him sitting in the library reading "how to become a god for dummies".
Is such a thing even possible? Isn't the alicorn process handled by harmony or something so the uplifting process is basically done by the semi-sapient magic of the land?
It'd be a pretty great way for it to backfire on Silvanus if he is able to transform himself into a god only because he threw Gerhardt into a universe where it's possible.
Might be explained in the yet added Silvanus context as he may have already been aware of all of this and know that he can't do anything with it except waste his time.
I think he's going to either run into a dead end and stop or waste ridiculous amounts of time on it.
Does anyone else think it was incredibly insensitive of them to just completely shut down what so far might be the only way to save his race? I mean, even if they don't know him too well they had to know he wouldn't stop at just being asked to, right? It's even a bit hypocritical because I know for a fact that they would do the same for their own people!

They don't believe that it would work like he hopes. Perhaps he may find a way to become a demigod but anything more than that they believe would be impossible. Plus the way he was acting made it seem like he just wanted power. Yeah, he mentioned that they might be able to kill Silvanus but look at it from their perspective.
He's a highly skilled technomancer who can be extremely dangerous when he wants to be, and he is usually very calm and collected. Then suddenly he learns they used to be mortal and his behavior suddenly takes a complete 180 and he seems way too eager about the prospect of gaining god-like power. They have dealt with megalomaniacs like King Sombra, Queen Chrysalis, Nightmare Moon, Tirek, and Discord in the past and have seen what their lust for power has caused. So the way he's acting about the prospect of gaining such immense power immediately sets off alarm bells in their heads. If he ends up becoming like them if he gains the power he wants he could be worse than anything they have ever faced before due to his willingness to kill and they may not actually be able to stop him which means their people could be put in danger if he goes mad with power. And in Celestia's case she's also worried she may lose a friend if he does go mad with power, which she definitely doesn't want.
Plus there's the fact he would be running tests and experiments on them like lab rats. No one wants to be treated like a lab rat.
If he had been a bit more calm about it and had reacted in a more controlled manner then they would have been a bit more open to the idea, though they still wouldn't have particularly enjoyed being used as test subjects. However his behavior at the time set off alarm bells and pretty much killed any chance of that.
They are sympathetic to what's happening to the humans, however they also have to look after the best interests of their own people. And Gerhardt’s behavior made them concerned for the safety of their people due to their past experiences with megalomaniacs.
Plus they have only known Gerhardt for a few months. It hasn't even been a full year yet. So while they do trust him to an extent due to how much he has helped them they still don't quite know him well enough to actually put their full faith in him in this sort of situation, especially due to his violent tendencies in the face of adversity. So while they don't want to think he would actually go mad with power they can't exactly take the risk either.
At that particular time they were seeing things from the perspective of rulers of Equestria rather than the perspective of Gerhardt’s friend.
You see my point?
10777107
I do see your point but again I ask, what made them think he'll stop just because they said so? Does he at all seem like the type of person who would give up just like that? They don't think there's going to be an attempt to do so regardless of their help? I think that's just wishful thinking, to be honest.
He didn't get that far along in his thought process they just preemptively said no.
As a practical matter I don't think he would be able to learn anything from analysing them anyway as he's interested in the process not the end result.
The most useful info they could probably give him would be the conditions surrounding how they became alicorns which will probably end up with gerhart finding a pony volunteer for him to try to uplift since only ponies can become alicorns and I would assume he will need to see and monitor the process to attempt to replicate it.
Or he could happen to witness twilight's ascension as I don't think she's an alicorn in this fic.
10777125
They suspect he might but they can't really stop him if he does. The only way they could do so is if they locked him up in Tartarus which he has done absolutely nothing to deserve, which means that isn't an option for them. Thus they just have to trust him and hope he doesn't conduct such research since that's really their only option. I mean, what else could they possibly do?
10777133
You are correct. He is interested in the process not the end result. However he has no way to study the process itself as no one is undergoing it at that time which only leaves him with the end result. For all he knows there could be traces left over in the Princesses that he could use as clues to how the process works to begin with. So given the chance he would conduct some tests on them at the very least in hopes of finding some sort of clue to lead him in the right direction.
I have to agree with the consensus that the princess were unreasonable with their denial.
The biggest reason for is that humanity faces extinction and anyway to prevent such thing shouldn't be unreasonable as billions are dying, and as fellow rulers they should understand that.
Secondly they obviously wouldn't be treated as lab rats just let Gerhardt run a few tests on them, show him Starswirl unfinished spell and let him examine the elements/tree of harmony.
Honestly both Gerhardt and Isabel should have pushed harder on this matter, yes turning everyone into Gods would be bad but one or two people especially ones who lived for a very long time like Gerhardt could save humanity, and even if the princesses think it's futile it's still a worthy endeavor to try and save humanity.
10777136
They could offer to help within reason so they can monitor his progress and make sure he doesn't do anything evil or accidentally corrupt himself. They can only prevent him from doing anything bad by being a part of the process. If something isn't properly regulated and monitored the problem doesn't go away. It instead usually gets much worse because you have no idea what's going on! Am I saying let him use them as lab rats? No, God no, but they have to at least be there so they can make sure nothing bad happens and to make sure he doesn't misuse it!
I just had a thought, could biomancy be used to prevent mind control powers from affecting you maybe by giving one’s self biological defences( though I guess this wouldn’t work on an animal that is already within easy reach of the everfree spirit).
10777157
I suppose I see your point. I guess I can tweak a few things when I update the chapter tomorrow to address some of these points. Others I can try to address in the next chapter. Though Gerhardt did already address the point about not turning everyone into gods.
10777158
Fair point. I honestly hadn't thought of that while writing this chapter. Sometimes smart solutions like that elude me, unfortunately. Well, I won't be changing their reactions in this chapter too much in tomorrow's update. However, in the next chapter I can have them discuss this issue and come to that conclusion. Given time to properly discuss and think about the problem with eachother they end up deciding on a better course of action than simply leaving him to his own devices and hoping he doesn't end up doing any thing stupid. I feel that would be fairly realistic in a sense.
10777157
from what we know discord could be a true god in this universe and if he tells them about what is going on then the ponies will have to act.
I think that the princesses only know what Gerhardt knew and told them but with a new vistor things could get harder to deny.
Im not sure why they dont give Gerhardt the unfinished spell but if the spell does make ponies into demigods in this unvierse then with some reserch would it be a streach to say that Gerhardt could make a wepon to make gods into mortals?
10777308
Three reasons. One, I have no idea what spell you're talking about. The one Twilight finished doesn't turn anyone into demigods. It just fixed the cutie marks of her friends as far as I'm aware, and completing it made her complete some sort of requirement necessary to ascend. Cadance did a similar task to become an alicorn, from what I understand.
Two, they're concerned about how eager he was to gain god-like power. Due to the way he was acting they’re worried that he may end up like Equestria's villains and go mad with power on the extremely slim chance that he did succeed. And if he did succeed and went mad with power like they fear he will, he would be the single most dangerous creature they have ever faced due to his willingness to kill and they’re afraid they wouldn't be able to stop him. So like responsible rulers they refused to help him for what they view as the good of their people. Also, they don't believe that it is possible for a demigod to become a lesser god in the first place, so there's that.
Third, Gerhardt can't use Equestrian spells. He doesn't understand how their spells work because they don't exactly operate in the same way that he's used to. They make use of incantations and what mathematics they do use makes no sense to him. For him learning how to use Equestrian spells would be like trying to learn an entirely new language but much more difficult and more time consuming. The ponies can use his spells because his system of arcane equations makes sense and is based purely on logic and hard fact, but the reverse is not true. Thus the reason he's having to develop his own arcane equation for teleportation rather than just using a spell in an Equestrian spell book. So even if they did give him some sort of unfinished spell like that, he wouldn't be able to do anything with it to begin with because their spell system makes no sense to him.
Anyways to answer your question, no. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that. The ability to turn mortals into gods could absolutely be used as a weapon, and a very powerful one at that.
10777446
so theoreticly if Gerhardt was allowed to study alicorns would he be able to find the information needid to eventualy make a weopn to turn gods into mortals?
Also im not entirely sure that the unfinished spell was actualy starswirls as he doesnt seem to have done much like that. would it be possible that celestia put an existing unfinished spell or one of her own making in a starswirl book to make twilight want to use it? i mean that spell did interact with the elements so mabey its original function was interfered with by the elements?
10777532
Could he make a weapon to turn gods into mortals? No. Could he find a method to turn mortals in to gods? Maybe but unlikely. Will he find a way to become a god? Spoilers.
10777631
Posing such a specific question about your own story and then answering with 'spoilers' is the authorial equivalent to answering 'no comment' to a scandalous interview question. You're saying 'yes' without saying 'yes'. This is especially so after another question that ties into it was effectively answered as 'plausible' like you did.
10777674
No I'm not. I'm saying that I can't say one way or the other. I can't say that he won't find a way to become a god. However I can't say that he will either. Both options are equally likely from a narrative standpoint.
10777678
You know what. Fine. If anyone wants spoilers, here you go. Anyone who doesn't please do not look at the black box below.
No. Gerhardt is not going to find a way to become a god. He might find a way to become a demigod but that would be it. I have no intention of ever making him become a god and I don't really want to make him a demigod either. So unless I change my mind at some point in the future, he is a mortal mage and that's all he will ever be.
I absolutely loath Silvanus, his existence had better be wiped forever in the far - but soon - future.
I've read what you've got here, but I nearly didn't because the story blurb reminded me of a different, poorly written story. It was one where the main guy was a "secret" mary sue, and also the story had generally poor grammar.
10778136
Oh crap, really? Damn. I knew the summary would turn people off the story... Sorry about that! I'm absolutely terrible at writing summaries and I know it. I'll try to improve it a bit so people don't compare this with that story in the future. Thank you for informing me of this issue, I really appreciate it.
10778168
No problem, my guy. It just felt similar to that other story where I stopped reading after like half a chapter. I don't know if it was similarly worded, or what, but that was what came to mind.
The real shitters are the stories where the blurb is well written, but the story isn't. There wasn't anything wrong with your blurb other than maybe it reminded me of the poorer story.
Same thing. Bonds or bindings. Might consider using Find to search the entire fic for binds and fix it whenever appropriate.
Affect.
