I gotta say, Blackbird's got some ovaries on her to keep threatening Dim that way. He's likely the most dangerous person she's ever met, and she's smart enough to know it. I mean we, as the audience, know that Dim isn't just gonna flip out and rearrange her outsides with her insides, but she doesn't know that. Stick with the jokes and quit poking the bear is what I'm saying. You'll live a lot longer that way.
Bit of an odd place to put that quote at the end there. Between the two of them I'd peg Dim as the greater threat every time.
I really like the character dynamic between Dark and Blackbird. The aurthor's notes are very appropriate.

Oh, that quote is with Starling in mind... Blackbird’s mother.

As an aside, I am genuinely baffled by your statement that she is threatening Dim. Never once did I write a word of hers to be threatening. I can’t even see what might be threatening after multiple rereads.
On exiting the saloon, Dim turns to Blackbird, "Care for a game of Jenga?"
oh Dim, how dark are you... pop pop goes the heads, twist goes the horns
and yes, the aurthor's notes are quite fun to read

*tilts head* Really? Well okay, first of all, pretty much from the moment they met Blackbird told Dim he could look but not touch, and that if he tried she'd dump him overboard in his sleep. That's fine, that's pretty much what I'd expect from a young attractive girl out by herself in the frontier. She was a bit, well, insistent on this point, but it's obvious she's had a bad experience before so I ignored it.
Then she jokes about eating Dim, which I chose to interpret as an off-color joke. Then, once Dim has cleaned himself up a bit, she sets about teasing him a bit with taking him out after they find her mother, where she again repeats the 'look but don't touch' spiel. It's at this point that I feel she's getting more comfortable around Dim, because I feel she's pressing her luck a bit. And then they reach the next port, and pretty much out of nowhere she starts talking about one of her previous companions, I, much like Dim am wonder 'And the point to this story is?' and then she mentions that he wouldn't take no for an answer so she dumped him overboard and he's probably dead now, 'Ah' I think 'that was the point.'
Then, after they hit the slaver den, she catches Dim staring again. Not that surprising by this point, she knows Dim is interested in her, and she's given him no reason to stop staring, but despite that she insists that no means no, and that he should look but not touch... again. Now I am not Dim, I am not anything like Dim, but that still annoyed me, especially after her 'story' earlier. Believe me Blackbird, we get it, you want to use your feminine wiles on Dim, but you also want him to respect your physical boundaries, we understand. We could not understand it more if you shrieked it to the heavens and wore a shirt that said 'NO MEANS NO!' in bright, bold font.
It seems every chapter or two she manages to slip in some variation of 'Don't try and rape me, because if you do I'll kill you' into her dialogue, and again, yes, I get it, pretty girl out there in the frontier all alone. But still, there's a difference between making sure you're understood and hammering the point home. One is understandable, the other is just annoying.

I was looking for threats in this chapter, where she has pretty much stopped doing that.
Blackbird, for all of her seeming confidence, is really quite insecure.
8286787
*sigh* I figured it was probably unintentional. Still, the girl really should learn to watch her words more often. Saying the wrong thing to the wrong person, even unintentionally, can and has cost people their lives before. I imagine Blackbird herself would get rather cross with an Earth Pony companion that kept reiterating some variation of 'You'd better not try and eat me, or I'll kill you,' over and over again. Even if they were just unintentional insinuations.

She’s hardly known Dim for any length of time at all and she’s watched him drop a number of bodies. So far, all she has going for her is the fact that he likes looking at her, and talking tough.
She’s been looking for a capable companion for a while. But she didn’t find a capable companion, she found a disgruntled psychopath living on the lam. It’s one thing to manage some nerd who thinks he is his Ogres and Oubliettes character, or even a fellow thief, but how does one ‘get comfortable’ with a character like Dim?
This is beyond her experience. Even worse, Dim is smart enough to know that he is being played, so Blackbird knows that she is running out tricks. As she said it herself, sooner or later, her luck was going to run out. She wanted a White Knight and got Bad Company instead.
8286818
And I get that, if I'm being perfectly honest I'm surprised she isn't curled up in a ball somewhere. Her mother didn't raise no weak chick, that's for sure. But she's still in way, way over her head, and talking tough only works until your mouth writes a check your tush can't cash.
8286852
And there is a distinct point within this very chapter that Blackbird realises just that.
This is, quite literally, a turning point. Interactions from here on out will be different.
Instead of exploiting Dim, now there is a sincere desire to help him. He’s far, far more likely to find her mother than she is, so keeping him leveled out becomes paramount.
We’ll slowly see this dynamic take shape and establish new boundaries.
hmmm. can't help but feel that it would be a lot more difficult than that...... eh its probably just me thinking on my own canons and such.
in the chase oyu worked with the idea of alternate dimensions.... i have to ponder what a character like dim would do if he ended up somewhere where everything was a shitload harder to kill. like he slips through the cracks and tries to kill these two, only to discover that they have evolved an adaptation in a world of magical attacks.
being a fuckoad harder to kill and prone to taking great offense to someone trying to kill them.
8286862
Sounds good! It's always fun talking things out like this. On the one hand I always kind of dread saying something about a story and having someone say 'How so?' because that means I have to backtrack, examine my own thoughts and feelings, and then try to put those feelings into words without fucking things up. But at the same time it's really interesting to read about other people's interpretations, or even better, the author's own intentions for a character or chapter.

In this instance, Dim walked into a place where business-creatures were running a business. Not soldiers, not killers, not hardasses, but some petty thieves and an accountant who thought it would be nice to start his own business.
8286880 i know. but a dragon would survive being thrown into molten lava whether he is the biggest bastard in the universe, or an accountant :P.
i was stating less of them being warriors and more them being pissed off someone just attacked them.... and of a scenario where dim ends up in a world where creatures of magic origin can take a few knocks... that so happen would have instantly killed theversions of them in dim's universe.
be like if jason suddenly ended up in a world where everyone can survive being stabbed by a machete....
which would admitably be in some shonen anime XD
Look kids! It's a weak ember of friendship!
Sooo... Blackbird is nowhere near as "good" or "innocent" as we have been led to believe.
Whistling for help and sticking the first sap to come to help, whether genuinely well-meaning or opportunistic, between her and the danger and simply whistling again when they're used up.
I'm almost tempted to say she suits Dim, which is a bit of a shame.

Clawing put his eyes, throwing him overboard... there were a couple

It depends upon the power and type of the defenses against said magic. Like if someone was a Null, that's VERY different than someone who could create a shield or who had natural magic resistance, because such things could in theory be overwhelmed MUCH more easily, than the Null. Even a dragon who has superior magical resistance, is never immune to all magic. It's like Ki power in DBZ, you can ignore a sufficiently low energy blast, but anything too high above your level can literally vaporize you.
Maybe the creature has a "Can resist any 1 attack no matter how powerful", but if you used a multi-hit attack (Think Sniper Riffle vs Shotgun), then they could still be toast. Though the surprise from such a resistance would give them a power edge in a counter.
Then of course there's things like Elemental Immunity, where if Dim were to use a Fire Attack a creature could take 0 or even HEAL from said attack.
etc. etc.
So, is that Filthy's brother or cousin or something??
Dim is a contender for my favorite character in the Weedverse.
