I can't seem to find the word "gease". What does that even mean?

Geas.
A cuppa tea to go with that justice.
8714581
Geas. It's a magical binding, a compulsion to fulfill a set of conditions. More or less.
There for a while I pondered if there was true justice with this court. Only being able to give guilty judgements sounds like a kangaroo court. With the idea of Guilty leniency its still not prefect still offers options beyond just killing everyone they caught

These prisoners were caught in the act. There can be no doubt they are guilty. Courts like this one were common at one time.
What they are fundamentally saying is that they were dead as soon as they met the captain, as he seems quite on the point of killing anyone who dares disobey. So the point is you are dead if you do and you are dead if you don't.

As A.P.O.N.I. said. It's usually a nasty piece of work in D&D settings and is actually labeled as a curse. Those under one usually CANNOT act against the spell. Trying either fails, or winds up with extreme pain or even death. If you've read the Harry Potter series, think the Unbreakable Vow only it doesn't always need to be a willing recipient. This makes it extremely practical for ensuring bargains and contracts are kept.
How precisely geas's operate in the Weedverse I don't know for sure but it seems to operate under the same principles.
8714726
No one managed to argue correctly that given the proclivities of the captain they were on pain of death for disobeying... And so there was NO good option for them.
8714748
There is always the means to walk away in port.
Edit: provided you're not press ganged.
Great to see d show compassion this way <3
Dim gets experience in what rulership entails, performs well.
Some people might be worried that the court was harsh, but naval law is serious business. You don't fuck around on the ocean. Be it the water or cloud-ocean, I suppose. Whenever you make a decision your entire life is gambled on it. If there's any doubt you say no and get out of there.

not if the captain is just gonna have you gutted for even tryying.
course if they all just had enough of it there would be little he could do against the entire crew.
8715092
It helps to understand naval tradition. Sailors had the right to walk away in port. Most of the time. A bad captain would have his crew just walk away to find work with another captain.

Most sailors were freelance. Albeit this is a situation of exceptionally illegal goods so its unlikely anyone could have wandered off safely.
In the end it was a situation where preventing this was reliant on a majority of the group abandoning this project, or anyone who tried to leave owuld have been killed.
The group had the power to stop it but there were those who were going along, and the people who wanted nothing to do with it knew they had no choice else they would be targeted.... It is immensely common sadly.
Dim's cup, Munro ya funny mug!!

Honk?

Day 113. I have tried a new poison and nothing has seemed to happen. Received compliment for the excellence of my tea. Starting to worry. Been growing far more paranoid as of late, not sure why. Can't help but think that my own cups of tea taste funny. It's strange, every time my finger comes in contact with wet ink, my ears ring for a while and I feel rather faint. I think I hear spiders crawling around inside of the walls, but I can't say for sure.

Bad news: they hate each other. Dim is chaotic neutral and Flicker is lawful neutral. Mixing the two of them is like mixing dynamite and matches.
8715443
All I’m seeing here is they are both neutral, and go together as well as dynamite and matches
8713336
You are probably right. I can't say that I have had experience either. I was just guessing.
Did dim just sentence him to be adopted?
Sooo... They out and admitted it was a kangaroo court and all the crew were doomed the moment the ship was captured. They only were there to determine how slowly they died. Heck, they were only capable of variations on the 'guilty' verdict.
There's also the issue that they appear to be punishing the cub at least partially for cowardice, while executing all those who fought back. So, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Maybe some/most of the crew had similar stories, but they didn't get the chance to tell them to anyone they thought might listen.
Playing the devil's advocate here a bit, as slavers should die IMO, but this plus the events of and AN last chapter feel very backslidey.
