This story is a sequel to A Certain Magical Friendship – Context_SHIFT

Nightmare Moon had been defeated.
Everypony had returned home from the world of 'A Certain Magical Index'.

But the portal is still open.

And when a certain world begins to probe a friendly world, both will have to come together to answer the question: are clones people?

Glad Twilight has latched onto how odd the whole situation has been, although I'm afraid Pinkie will kidnap her if she doesn't party soon.

However, overall? Pretty freaking good, and I can't wait to see more.

JMP

Wasn't expecting a sequel immediately after the first story ends, but I'm not complaining and am rather excited. I noticed Accelerator on the cover art and I'm looking forward to him showing up.

This looks interesting, although not much happens here. That being said, Pinkie using awful Japanese was rather funny, and you setup the real action next chapter.

I have to wonder how Index will react to an entire magical realm she has little precedent for. If any of them realize just how bizarre their situation is/the transformation, I imagine it would be her.

I give it even odds that Tomas is completely immune to the context shift.

JMP

Ahhaha, I always love Mikoto and Touma's interactions. Pinkie was fairly entertaining as well. Not sure why she insisted on speaking nonsensical Japanese when Mikoto and Kuroko can speak English, but it was funny.

Things are gonna be interesting once everyone's on the other side of the portal. The Sisters act quite noticeably different than Mikoto herself, so I'm sure MISAKA #9748 is going to be in a bit of an awkward position once she's quickly found out to not actually be Mikoto. Hmmm...I wonder if the MISAKA experiment is going to have trials in Equestria in this story. Accelerator is in the cover art.

JMP

Imagine Breaker was seriously messing with that portal, huh. It also took me far longer than it should have for me to realize that the "Railgun" talking was a MISAKA sister and not a sentence structure error. And poor Touma XD. The world doesn't know what he is, then he literally gets dragged off to an adventure that he didn't ask for.

What happend to Touma makes no sense in the context of the Index/Railgunverse
Image breaker doesn't just negate supernatural phenomenoms it normalises thing in referenz to the original world. Image Breaker is the Ultimate referenz point to a world without the supernatural, why would the portal which is magical in nature affect it ?

Another point would be how is it even posible that Touma still has the Image breaker in Equestria? Image breaker is bound to the existence of "Kamijou Touma" and only Touma because he represents a normal existence, now that Touma is a mule something extraordinary in the reference of equestria and the whole Mlp world how can he still hold the power of Image breaker wihich represents the ordinary World ?

Should Touma not be something which is utterly normal in appearance like an earth pony without an cutie mark ? Not something extraordinary like an mule with a faint cutie mark which would be considered abnormal in context of the Image breaker which represents normality ? Or if you go whith the Original meaning of the Image breaker should it not even negate the change of touma to another species through magical means?

All in all i like your story so far but this chapter did bring up very big Questions for people who know the light Novel of Toaru Majutsu no Index because it trows out some of the established facts of the series

8367970
Not sure how much of this I will answer in story, so I might as well put it here... it's not like it's a spoiler or anything...

Here's the thing - 'normal' is context-dependent. When you are travelling through Context SHIFT (the portal yet to be named in story), your context is changing around you.
What happened is that Imagine Breaker recognised that the new elements were not 'normal', and so negated them, but when it went to put Touma back to normal, it wasn't sure what normal was. Thus, poor Touma was left with no identifying features other than Imagine Breaker itself. Index basically 're-imagined' him back into alignment with reality.

An earth pony's magic is perfectly natural in the same way that a Saint's magic is natural (IB can't negate that either). If Touma was an earth pony on the other side, he'd have access to normal earth pony super-strength. Being a mule makes him much closer to his starting point of 'powerless without IB'.

Finally, as for why IB is still attached to Touma, I'm running with the theory that IB is attached to 'Touma Kamijo' the object, not the person or the concept. After all, as far as we know it's always been attached to objects/locations before it came to Touma. (The only flaw in this theory being that Touma was able to call it back to himself after Fiamma stole it...)

8368043
But Image breaker does not "Normalise" things it is A Reference point of reality createt from the fear of every magician for "Losing" the world after they have affected it with their magic.

Best example would be what Orthinus has done she could only restore Toumas original world though Image breaker because it THE reference point of reality. Orthinus has done something similar like what you have done in this story, in that she shifted the viewpoint of everyone in the world of Touma.
But she could no change Touma herself with her power.

And again Touma from Kiyotaka Haimura is not considered to be a "Powerless person with Image breaker" he is considered to be a "Normal schoolboy with a completly useless Power" that is a big difference in your story context.

It has been revealed that the Imagine Breaker can choose which person can wield it. After being severed from Touma several times in the past, it still remained in his possession. According to Fiamma of the Right, the current generation is still attached to Touma, referring to it as "the right hand is only the right hand when it is growing from his right shoulder," referencing his failure in obtaining Imagine Breaker from Touma in the past

Best example would be what Orthinus has done she could only restore Toumas original world though Image breaker because it THE reference point of reality.

And yet IB didn't try to change the people from the Endless Hells back to they were in Touma's version of reality, even though they were made that way with magic. So clearly, IB can have it's definition of 'normal' changed if the world changes too.

And again Touma from Kiyotaka Haimura is not considered to be a "Powerless person with Image breaker" he is considered to be a "Normal schoolboy with a completly useless Power" that is a big difference in your story context.

I'm not sure that the artist is really the best authority to be quoting here... But anyway. I'm not aiming to make Touma powerless by any means - it's just that all ponies have superpowers, subtle or not. So I made him not a pony.

It has been revealed that the Imagine Breaker can choose which person can wield it. After being severed from Touma several times in the past, it still remained in his possession.

I'm aware of the text that you are quoting, but... nothing about it says to me that the right hand would stop being Imagine Breaker, just because it became a hoof.

Touma was still transformed into a pony (and his dialogue hint that he has mixed memories too, referring to the Celestial Empire), so it's not like he was completely immune to the effects of the portal. Just the attempts of the world to fit him into the new context of everypony else. That said, that's one way to remove him from immediately interfering with the story (and revealing the mystery too soon). I approve.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVEN'T UPDATED THIS SINCE AUGUST.

JMP

Hey, glad to see this back. Now to go back through the story so I remember where Mikoto went. Also, Toaru Majitsu no Index III anime 2018 HYPE!!!

Misaka9748 and Maud would really get along well.

JMP

Season 3. The Index novels do have a sequel, though. It's called "New Testament: A Certain Magical index" (Shin'yaku Toaru Majitsu no Index) and just continues right where the last volume of Index ends. Dunno how much Season 3 is gonna cover; there's a lot that happens after where Season 2 ends

I am unbelievably bittersweet about coming to this point. Oh, parting is such sweet sorrow!

Thomas says, Reading this brings me Enjoyment.

Haha. Glad to see this updated!

Darn, I am so eager to see what happens next in this delightful story.

Oh well, you have me captivated as is.

JMP

...what did 9748 do in that scene transition....? Also,

<Hey, Kuroko.> Misaka interrupted,

This scene takes in Equestria, doesn't it? Shouldn't Misaka be calling Kuroko "Stagehand"? I know that the narration calls the Index characters by their Academy City names, but considering everyone (who isn't Kuroko) was calling 9748 "Railgun" and Twilight "charged her horn" in this scene, I'm guessing that this was a slip up?

8774317
WHOOPS.

Yep, totally a slip-up. Fixed.

The next chapter should be interesting, Uzume muses. Twilight's spell will probably fail, leaving her not knowing what is actually creating the clones until Misaka herself explains it to her, Uzume speculates.

8969413
Well, I'd better get my groove on and write that chapter then!

Do remember though, everypony was worried that Twilight would banish the real Pinkie to the Mirror Pool by mistake...

8969591
I forgot about that, Uzume admits, scratching the back of her head sheepishly.

However, it is extremely easy to tell the difference between the real Misaka and her clones, Uzume points out.

Now the real question is, how will the original Misaka react to Twilight's plan for dealing with the clone, Uzume wonders.

8970823
Touma gets the clones mixed up with Misaka all the time.

8971565
But Kuroko would be able to tell the difference between the real Misaka and her clones almost instantly, Uzume points out.

8971777

  1. How? The only visual cue that they are different is the goggles they usually wear, which this Misaka isn't wearing.
  2. Kuroko has already failed to notice this Misaka isn't the one she knows.
  3. Kuroko isn't the one going around with a banish spell and a sleep-deprived mind

I swear I thought this chapter would be longer, but once I finally typed it out it was this length...

By the way, what do people think of my pacing? Too rushed?

Huzzah!

The pacing? I'm just happy you updated. But if I had a complaint.. The ending doesn't feel like an ending. Feels like you had another 1 or 2k words to go, to resolve it.

JMP

9046948
I think your pacing's been just fine. Things are progressing steadily without dragging or feeling rushed

9047002
Well, yeah. There's another 2-4 chapters to go.

Next chapter we're going to get the "She's my sister" scene!

why the hell did one of the sisters mention the name of project level 6 shift in front of those non-affiliated with it, you would have thought they'd be discrete about the secret mission.

9048398
Fair point. I've changed that line of dialogue to refer to 'our previous assignment' instead.

“Alright.” Twilight Sparkle smiled, one eye twitching and tiny purple sparks flying from her horn. “Which one of you is the clone?”

I'm not sure the anti-clone spell would actually work on this clone. For one, I'm fairly certain she's nothing like the clones made by the mirror pool. Similar perhaps in premise, but in practice they're radically different, both in mentality and in how they're created. Not familiar with a certain magical index, but assuming the clone is either mechanically or organically grown, then it's nothing like the mirror pool clones, which seem to be magic given a shape in the form of whoever looked into the pool.

Mirror pool clones seem to lack a lot of intelligence or higher thought capabilities, too.

To cut a long story short, I imagine Twilight's anti-clone spell would only fizzle out if used on one of these clones, mostly because unlike the mirror pool clones, she's likely has real substance to her.

Or Twilight's going to accidentally kill her next chapter and get covered in gore and viscera.

Who knows, it's not my story. Fun to guess though.

9057286
If the anti-clone spell didn't work on non-mirror-pool-clones, there would be no reason to worry about Pinkie being hit with it.

9057433
That makes it a bit more worrying, to be honest.

That implies the spell was designed to kill any living creature, rather than dispel magical clones (which is an incidental bonus). In which case, Twilight failed to question why a spell designed to remove magical clones would even injure or potentially kill the original in question.

Of course, she read it in a book and likely assumed the book was true.

Makes me wonder though if someone who knew the spell originally either wrote it as a "clone dispelling ray" to try and hide its original murderous intent (potentially someone ashamed at its use/a killer of some sort hiding their treks when the spell is known to some extent), or if no one legitimately ever thought that a spell designed to dispel organic matter might very well also be excellent for murdering sapient beings.

Also, as a final note:
If Twilight knew the spell could hurt or even kill Pinkie Pie, why would she use the spell and put her friend's life at risk? There has to be other approaches to figuring out which is clone and which isn't that doesn't mean one of your best friends may die if her attention drifts for a second. It implies either Twilight did not think about the consequences of her spell, didn't care to, or she treats her friendships without concern for her friends' continuing lives.

And now you know why this story is marked 'gore'.

9350345
Of course it was because Ac*yay*celerator...

Touma blinked, his triple-Misaka daydream (day-nightmare?) suddenly interrupted by a thought. <Wait, so what stops ponies from using this spell on ponies they don’t like?>

<Nothing.> Index said, again bluntly. <There’s no telling how many ponies are trapped inside the Mirror Pool, unable to be released as nothing can reflect their image.>

Whoa. Such a dark scenario.

JMP

Why hello, Accelerator. Glad to see you in all your pre-punched face and pre-bullet to the head glory. Wait...his dialogue is in quotes rather than angular brackets. So before Twilight even spoke, he was speaking in English rather than Japanese? 9748 is one thing since Kuroko's bilingual (or at least close enough), but while I can buy Accelerator easily being smart enough to know English, using it by default?

And you happy now, Twilight? This definitely didn't go the way I thought. Misaka cares too much about her "sisters" for her own good, sometimes.

9350975
...whoops. You're right - Accelerator should be speaking Japanese first. Corrected.

<Where did you say this pool was again?>

Touma's going to smash the pool's illusion, isn't he?

9429150
Well, it's not like he'd notice seven years worth of bad luck...

Applejack opened her mouth to say ‘Leave magic to the unicorns and go to sleep’, remembered who she was talking to, and closed it again.

HA!

Onto the next chapter!

(and for some reason, the bruise on her face throbbed as she thought that)

lol. Nice!

Onto the next chapter! Might need to take a food break.

“Your favourite snack is tea cake with vanilla frosting.” Pinkie replied immediately.

“I never told Pinkie Pie that.” Twilight shot back.

Pinkie paused, then drooped her head. “Oh, right.”

Twilight suddenly blinked. “Wait. How did you know what my favourite –”

HA!

And woah, that Touma stuff!

This chapter! So funny!

And surprise-ish Touma!

Next chapter must wait until food. Lol at having food break after this chapter. nvm, no food yet.
