The Everfree Forest is not the nicest place in Equestria, but it's nothing those that live under its canopy aren't used to – fillies coming to visit are another story. They are also a lot more forgiving, and pony friendship can affect even the most wooden of hunters.

Inspired by a PMV by Loveless Nova (unfortunately no longer available in the US, but it was based on this version, with more ponies) and, more generally, the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Really good start, I want to see where this goes. Liked and fav'ed.

I always like to see more interactions between Apple Bloom and Zecora. I liked the narration from the timberwolf's point of view and thought it did a good job of presenting the world from its perspective. While it does a good job of introducing the timberwolf and giving a view into Apple Bloom's lessons, the chapter doesn't establish a conflict to give the reader a sense of where the story will go in future chapters. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing what comes next.

Glad you're both enjoying it so far! I've definitely got plans for the future chapters, and I hope you have just as much fun with those when they come out.

Good to hear that the timberwolf's perspective actually worked! I definitely had fun with it, but I wasn't sure whether it would make sense for anyone else. His section next chapter seems to be coming along really nicely, so hopefully you like that as well.

And I certainly agree with the description of the lack of conflict. Even the stories I just have in early planning tend to be very much character pieces – often with nearly as much focus on the worldbuilding – and have a much more personal scale. It's not that they don't involve any external conflict, but it's very much another setpiece rather than the focus. That "Slice of Life" tag is very much in play. The lack of obvious direction probably does wind up losing a few readers, but I really do like that style.

7170325 I loved the PMV, and I've been looking for a story about it! Can't wait for the next!

7221347 Something about it really does catch your imagination, right? And just a warning: it's probably still going to be a couple months or so before the next chapter's ready — the first part of it's already drafted, but I'm going to need to finish up the term before I'll have time to finalize it or write the second. Definitely looking forward to seeing it come together myself, though!

7221841 That's fine! Take care of school first! I learned that the hard way... Pray that you don't lose something important because of it! Good luck!

7221841 I got impatient! Sorry! But is there an ETA now?

7393870 Sorry, I've just finished up a remarkably heavy summer course - I had planned on writing during the time between that and work, but every spare minute I had (and a number of my shifts) went into coding for the assignments. I'm now going into a week off without my computer, though -- a good thing; I write my first drafts in pen -- and for a month after that I'll be getting started on a (programming) commission but should still have plenty of time around that to give to Apple Bloom and her wolf. Can't give you anything concrete, unfortunately, but if everything goes well, it might be out in two weeks; if it goes slowly, probably not more than two months. I definitely want to finish it by the end of September, but that's more a worst-case scenario than a likely date.

7406519 I know I'm being a bit impatient, but is there an somewhat clearer ETA? I myself am just starting college, so I know that time might be tight.

*edit bit impatient AGAIN.:twilightsheepish:

Glad to see this in any case! great chapter, but how come Heartwood can understand Zecora in his half, but we don't actually "hear" applebloom?

7816829 Thanks for asking! I tried to hint at that, but I'll definitely admit that I could have been less subtle. What Zecora brewed for her final test before becoming a shaman has allowed her to understand everyone and everything (unless there's some creature that is completely immune to magic), and if she calls on the magic she put in the potion, everyone understands what she's saying as if she said it in their own language. Heartwood understands Zecora perfectly because the magic is translating for him, but since it only affects what she herself says, he and Apple Bloom have to learn what each other mean the hard way -- much like us and non-magical dogs. He might have a pretty good idea of whatever Apple Bloom says, but it's more along the lines of a dog staying several feet in front of us and looking back if we fall behind: we know they want us to follow them, but we don't "hear" it as if they were to speak English. By the way, if you've read Kin, Apple Bloom's amulet in that is based on Zecora's potion (though it only works between her and Heartwood), but she doesn't make that until several years after this story.
