After years under Zecora's tutelage, it is time for Apple Bloom to take her final test to become a full-fledged shaman; the Spirit Chase. All she has to do is summon a spirit, catch it, and bind it. What sounds simple quickly proves to be anything but when the spirit takes the chase out of the Everfree forest and into Ponyville.
While a Myths and Birthrights side-story, no knowledge of the setting is required to enjoy this one-shot.

With the moving and repurposing of the Golden Oaks Library and subsequent start of construction of the cathedral, it sounds like Twilight hasn't been around Ponyville in about as long. Sea voyages in the age of sail could take years to complete once the open oceans began being braved by sailors, after all.
On the other hand, human sailors didn't have the advantage of an alicorn powerful enough to teleport an entire ship where she wanted to go when she was in a hurry…

Twilight, and a lot of things in the main story, aren't mentioned as I didn't want to confuse new readers who haven't read Myths, or put in too many spoilers for those who are reading the parent story. She could be in Ponyville, or out on the Bellerophon still, or living in the Taiga now (she is, technically, the Princess of the Taiga after all). This story isn't spoiler free, mind you. Natra-Dame des Etoiles (Our Lady of Stars) isn't mentioned until Chapter 19 of Myths.

Even if Twilight could only manage to do that once every other day, it would still be enough to cut transit time in half! The world record for distance sailed in 24 hours was set at 465 nautical miles (861 km) by the clipper ship Champion of the Seas in 1854—a record that stood for almost 130 years and took a super sized, fiberglass-hulled catamaran with kevlar(?) sails to break. So, yes, teleporting the Bellerophon—even if it's a ship built expressly for speed, like a clipper, and ignoring the feat of the teleport itself—a few hundred miles is a really big deal.
Okay, before I even get into the story, the cathedral? The moved and repurposed library? Sweet.
And now Apple Bloom chasing a spirit fox? Awesome.

Yes. I decided not to include it because I wanted to have the story end abruptly, just like the chase. I was also trying to keep this short and not run my fingers off. I also just wasn't 'feeling' what should or would come after she caught Orenda.
I think though that I should go back in and insert a quickly line along the line of 'Apple Bloom felt a tingle flicker across her flanks, like somepony was tickling her.' Something to hint that she got her mark at the end, and then leave what the mark is up to individuals.

Apprentice Bloom is slated to be included in the next chapter of Myths. Orenda might be in the epilogue of either Myths or The Rariad. If she is it would just be a brief mention, something along the lines of her lounging about.
Sadly, the timeline just doesn't allow for Orenda to appear in Myths otherwise.

First of all, great story. I surprised Apple Bloom still doesn't have her Cutie Mark at this point (I mean, would you spend 3 years learning a trade if you weren't sure it was for you), but maybe there's something special about her, considering she's Ioka counterpart to a Gaean Alicorn (forgot the specific name, but it was one of the fates right?). I'd like to see where she goes next, but I'm sure you want to get back to the main story or another side.
One thing that was notable to me was that this story takes place in the future (compared to Myths and Birthrights current update anyways). This provided some clues as to what may happen in MaB. For instance,
Twilight's temple has been in construction for a year, whereas it is still in the planning stages as of chapter 19 of MaB, meaning this story takes place at least a year after the events of that chapter. It could be longer due to some emergency or protest delaying the construction. But considering Carousal Boutique has been boarded up for the past year, it would be about a year after Rarity was transported to Gaea. That detail also says that either Rarity hasn't returned yet, or has returned but abandoned her shop (my gut says the former, but the later is possible considering her Alicorn status. Maybe she became a Nightmare and was destroyed or contained).
Nothing about Fluttershy is mentioned, but that draws attention in itself. My first assumption was that all benevolent Alicorns are honored with temples. Considering the location of Twilight's temple, it would make sense for the Sisters to use Fluttershy's home as a site (unless she found a new site of significant importance during the year long gap.), but nothing about a temple to Fluttershy is mentioned. This leads me to speculate that aside from the Namegiver, only Princesses are given temples and Fluttershy rejected becoming royalty or her secret hasn't been discovered yet. Of course, she might also be dead (as dead as she can get anyways), or on her own adventure.
I can't imagine Applejack is pregnant anymore (but y'know, Alicorn foal, anything could happen), as a year has passed and she is out selling apples. I'm guessing this means life is going normally for her instead of being trapped in another dimension, posessed by a spirit, becoming an alicorn, etc.
Lastly, I noticed none of the OCs from the main story are mentioned. Considering you focused this story on Apple Bloom, Zecora, and the Kitsune, I'll brush aside any speculation there.
I could be over thinking this (yes, I'm the great and powerful canon critic!), as you will probably change details around and possibly rewrite this after more details of MaB are revealed.

No, you've got some pretty good insights and guesses there.
I purposefully avoided mentioning things that could either change or would spoil aspects of Myths. About the only thing I feel comfortable talking about is AJ and Ambrosia. Ambrosia has been born and is only a few months old at the time of this story.
There is a lot I don't really want to talk about and spoil. Fluttershy, for instance, I know where she ends up and what happens to her by the end of Myths. Then again, when I reach the point of writing those chapters, they could completely change and toss my plans into the rubbish bin.
AJ having Ambrosia is set. The temple getting built is set. Rarity not returning for at least a year is set. Pretty much everything else has wiggle room.
This Applebloom is the best Applebloom ever. No one ever writes for her(not that I've ever actively searched for ones). Very interesting direction.

I've tried coming up with a continuation, but everything is so darn reliant on finishing Myths and Birthrights first. It's not just a matter of spoilers for the main story. There are a lot of things that still aren't set in stone that would effect any continuation of the Apple and the Fox. For the foreseeable future this story, sadly, wont see anything more added to it.

I like how Apple Bloom basically inherits Orenda from Zubu, assuming this takes place after his demise, and that Orenda was his spirit partner to begin with.
I can't remember if it was ever mentioned in Myths, but did Zecora know Zubu?
