The End of Starlight Glimmer

Starlight Glimmer walked out of the mountains on the other side, tired, cold, hungry, and very, very angry. There was just one more tunnel to pass through, and then she would be on the Canterlot side of the mountains once more.

Those ungrateful foals! she steamed on, inside her head. We had built a Utopia! Absolute equality and friendship on every level!

And then, those…oppressors, that’s it, oppressors from Ponyville…especially that monarchist ruling-class Princess, Twilight Sparkle, came and smashed it! Destroyed it! Destroyed it to maintain the bourgeoisie class, like Rarity and that hick Applejack, so they could serve the idle monarchy. To force even more sitting-room culture on the proletariat!

At one fell swoop, she had ended the class struggle! All of her ponies were equal in every way possible with each other! No more exploitation! No more ‘mine’ and ‘yours’! Everything was owned by everypony!

And no one was excluded from friendship…

Suddenly she sat down in the road. “From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs…” she quietly whispered to herself, as her eyes filled with tears.

Yes, she held on to her Cutie Mark, and her magic. But only to serve them, as was proper. Some would simply be required to do so. That handsome Pegasus she had her eye on, for example. He would have to have been allowed his Mark once more. Weather there in the desert was frequently unpredictable. A Pegasus would have soon become necessary to protect all from the ravages of storm. And if he was a proper Consort to her…?

So much the better. Children would have validated her leadership. They would have all served everypony. To lead them all into the bright future of classless equality and friendship.

Gone. All gone.

The anger suddenly collapsed. All that was left was the bitter ash of failure, still warm in her mouth.

The flavor of it was not to her liking. It was even worse than those muffins of Sugar Belle’s.

“Excuse me…” said a male voice.

Starlight looked up. A strong stallion stood before her. As she watched, he smiled.

A bright, strong smile. A smile she had become used to. A smile like her ponies…like her former ponies once had for her and for each other. A smile of bright friendship. A smile that spoke to her.

The image of it brought a flash of anger and disappointment back.

“Go away,” she said quietly, as her eyes bored into the stallion.

“But miss…you seem so sad. Can I help you? I’d like to try, if I could…”

She blinked in surprise, and then lowered her head. “No. No pony can help. Everything I tried to do…is gone now.” she said mournfully.

“Everything? What was it you tried to do? Did somepony hurt you?” he said kindly, warmly.

“I tried…I tried to make things better for everypony. To help everypony be equal. To find friendship without any one pony being better than another,” Starlight sobbed quietly.

She sensed a second presence draw near the first. A mare this time. Larger, like that hateful Twilight Sparkle Alicorn.

“Ah. You met those Elements of Harmony, didn’t you?” A melodious voice, charming, sympathetic.

Harmony? They were oppressors! They destroyed us! Our Utopia, safe, secure, equal! They ruined it for their own special interests! To keep those monarchists in power. To oppress the underclass ponies. To use them, their labors, so they can stay in power over all of us! To hold out their useless opiate of ‘friendship’ so we would self-medicate ourselves into a stupor. And my comrades fell for it. They turned their backs on what we built. They tore it all down, so they could be ‘unique’, to have the chimera of ‘special talents’. They turned out Utopia. They turned me out. All for a mark on their flanks.”

She has stood up during her tirade, the anger in her rant driving her to her feet. She paced around in a small circle, trying to release the resentment.

“I understand, young one. We also fought against them. They are very powerful. But they are not as they once were. Their Elements are gone. They are much weaker now.” the mare said candidly.

She continued to explain. “We are now as you once were. Our collective is much stronger, though. We did not break, though they defeated our plan.”

She gestured toward her flank, then the flank of the stallion.

Starlight Glimmer drew in a sharp breath. The sign of equality was stamped upon both of them.

“We learned of your defeat, and your plight. We sought you out. We sought you out, to offer you to join us against Canterlot. Our strength grows every day, as more join us against those that would defeat us, break us and scatter us in the wind. Celestia’s power is great, ancient, but unwieldy. Luna follows her sister, and cannot conceive anything else. Cadance is far away, and unable to resist before it is too late. All we have to do to bring down this rotten class of corrupt power simply lies with the young and inexperienced Twilight Sparkle. Break her, bring her to equality, and the rest of the decay will fall.”

Starlight thought about it. The sense of it reached deep. To throw down Twilight, like she had been thrown down…the thought of it was mesmerizing. She wanted it. Wanted to revel in it.

Then, once the Alicorns were brought low, the proletariat would be able to easily seize the reins of power. Everypony would become equal. Perhaps some would resist at first…but Starlight had methods for those. The others, after learning of their oppression at the hooves of the upper-class, would gladly step forward to become better.

Starlight Glimmer smiled, one that would bring no reassurance to anypony seeing it.

“How many ponies do you have? Can you show me?” she asked. If there were a vast number, perhaps she would be chosen to lead her own group of them. Her ideology was pure, he devotion unwavering. And if their form-concept of the science of equality was weak, she could help them. And if too weak, she certainly could help purge and remove the impure reactionaries among them. She had learned much, as the science of equality demanded, after her fall. The ideologically impure must be confronted and rooted out, then destroyed.

One must have vision of the future…and the ruthlessness to pursue its evolution…she thought.

“Of course you may. Come, this way, down the tunnel, to our cave…”

Starlight was temporarily blinded by the darkness, but she felt the emptiness of a great room. A great room…filled with…some odd sort of rustling, chittery sounds…

Suddenly, the light sprang up. Starlight didn’t bother looking for the source. She was suddenly overcome by the terrifying sight before her.

It was horrifying, nightmarish, macabre beyond belief. Gestational cells, some filled with normal ponies, others with chrysalis containing embryonic Changelings, hung by vast numbers from the ceiling. Others busily pursued the business of the hive, not even sparing a glance in their direction.

“You see?” the stallion said…as a flash of green flame traveled up his body. An insectoid body, with compound faceted, blank, emotionless eyes.

The mare laughed. A laugh that chilled, then froze Starlight Glimmer motionless. The flame also traveled along her body.

Queen Chrysalis’ horn glowed with her aura, as the huge stone rolled into place over the cave opening.

“I am so glad you decided to seek equality, Starlight Glimmer,” Chrysalis said lovingly, horrifyingly, candidly.

”All you see before you is equality. All my Changeling children are equal with each other. None are greater than another. The peace and tranquility of the hive. No strife. No conflict. No dissension. After all, they are here to serve their Queen. To serve me…

She rounded on Starlight, a sickening, sweet smile on her face. A smile like her ponies once had. Below a face of horror. Horror…and hunger.

“As you shall, also. A nearby cell awaits you. But first; I am a bit peckish…”

No pony could hear the screams in the tunnel beyond the rock…

'and starlight blasted chrysalis and escaped'

powerful as chrysalis can be, she completely lacks training in magical arts. pretty clear that starlight is well trained. chrysalis would not be able to capture her.

5827888
Did she?
Queen Chrysalis captured and confined an ALICORN and took her place...remember?
Put the Benevolent Light of the Sun on the floor of her own CASTLE?
Starlight Glimmer is tough...but not that tough...

Crystalheart

Hum, that story was interesting and it has a good twist at the end.
Thank you for taking the time to write it.

5827915 ......... and again the massive falw in so many of these stories relating to chrysalis.
she got lucky. chrysalis admits she got lucky with celestia. she flat out states, after a brief moment of shock on her face, that unknowingly the raw love she stole from shining was great enough for her to overpower celestia. and that is only because celestia got caught up in a muscle conflict and did not know of her power boost. and more than likely she ambushed cadance and trapped her in that underground cave before she could retaliate, else the fight would have been LOUD.

if we are willing to bring the comics into this too, tiwlight defeats chrysalis by outmagicking her. chrysalis is probably more powerful than even a unicorn like twilight, yet one had legitimate magical training and the other is a powerful yet directionless witch.

5827937
Yet she overcame Cadence as well...
Try again...

Crystalheart

Dude. That got real dark real fast.

5827969 yeah, completely ignore the fact that chrysalis herself stated she was not that powerful, and the more logical prospect of an ambush on cadance, not to mention that a unicorn kicked her ass.

because if you ignored those statements of course it would magically negate the points i brought up because you bring up one point that i had already completely refuted.

5827998
Such speculation does not refute that Bug Queen took both Alicorns out on her path to the overthrow of Canterlot. No matter how she did it, she did it. Deception is as much an art of war as is interlocking fields of fire.
Speculation may suggest that the ONLY reason Twilight managed to undo her is because she was exhausted from her previous battles. But it is speculation only.
I prefer the canon of S2. She won. Rather handily, by the way. The trope is, "Kicked Worf's ass". This makes the antagonist much more dangerous than, "Chrysalis enters throne room, Celestia turns her into roasted bug, wedding occurs because Cadence was never bagged." Boring story, that.
However, if you feel yours is a better story, please, write it.

Crystalheart

i like it and by the way their is a tag for Starlight Glimmer you might to add it

5828047 speculation shows the reality of the situation, stated by the characters themselves. Chrysalis only won because she unknowingly had a power up, and likely a temporary one. by her own mouth did she admit this. this is not speculation, this is fact.

and chrysalis had already recovered from her defeat by the time she crossed paths with twilight and likely to her normal levels of might, having no access to shining armor's manic levels of affection. a level of might she knows is no match for celestia.

none of these speculations are just from the . they are all based on what hcaracters state and display. chrysalis only won by luck, and she knows this. only by luck. so why are you treating this fluke victory as if she had actually defeated celestia through cunning?

5827971
Short stories have to. These are stories you do for those that have a few minutes here and there to spend.
Our dear Starlight...so much taken from her...and yet I decide to kick her while she's down...
I'm a mean bastard...

5828099 are you going to add Starlight Glimmer tag in this story?

5828085
Thank You for the kind words! I did add her picture to it when I posted it.

Crystalheart

5828112 your welcome and i know but you still need to add her tag in this story so people that read this story know what pony's are in this story

5828119
Well, we'll see...I did write her in, but the bot still activated her picture again.

Crystalheart

5828092

Normally being weaker than Celestia does not make her weak. Starlight Glimmer may be a powerful unicorn, but there is no evidence one way or another that she is stronger than an unaugmented Chrysalis.

The comics' canonicity is very arguable (and indeed, there are word of god statements that the comics are specifically written to be separate from the show), so no one is required to treat them as fact when making their own story. If the author wants to write Chrysalis to be significantly stronger than Starlight or Twilight, then he/she can, especially since we don't know how much of a power gap there is between Twilight and Starlight, or between Celestia and Twilight.

5828485 and we have guys from hasbro and the show staff that want both comics and show to be in the same universe. even if the comics can be considered secondary, it sdoes not mean you can't work with them.

other than that even if the comics are not canon, which is leaning trowards secondary canon with the comics striving not to overshoot the series, that does not mean things revealed in the comics cannot be related to the characters.

5827888 ...
... you're an idiot.

You have no idea how powerful Starlight is. You have no idea how powerful Chrysalis is currently. You don't know whether or not she 'lacks training in the magical arts'. And yet you say...

No.

5828577

No, it does not mean that ths comics cannot be related to fanfic material. However, it DOES mean that the comics don't HAVE to be related, unlike show material (at least, without an alternate universe tag or disclaimer).

The starlight glimmer icon is out bro

5844785
Since I was quoting Marx directly, I don't get your point.
Everyone starts out benign and helpful...no one comes out and says, "I am going to oppress you" by definition. Yet you saw the production's contention...why send up minions to ground Dashie? She wasn't part of that group. Why push down Twi's head for being taller than everypony else? Why FORCE the Cutie Marks from them, then lock them away? If this existence is so wonderful, ponies would line up for it.
The final tell was Starlight herself, straight from Orwell...the retention of her own Cutie Mark. Everyone is equal...but some are more equal than others.
Perhaps the production team didn't actually decide to dump on Socialism/Communism directly...I happen to believe that to be the truth. But the essential case of parallels to Marx and Engels are too strong to ignore.
I just took them to a final conclusion.

5849664
It's a failed system of government. No matter when, no matter where, it fails. Especially when it has to be shored up with capitalism. It doesn't take into account the nature of people. And sooner or later, it oppresses. Because treating everyone the same always leads to oppressing those that always excel. Equivalency always means cutting the top down. The bottom rises only so far. Beyond that, the bottom cannot stay higher. There is no ability there. It falls back.
I would love to make binoculars or bridges from balloons. I can't. But then why should I tell somepony he can't, either, just because I'm not able to?
Not a lot of sense there.
Make whatever you want to, Party Favor...you have a rare and INCREDIBLE gift, pony...and NEVER let anypony tell you that you need to give that up so you are "equal" to them...ever.

Crystalheart

WHOA! Didn't expect THAT! :pinkiegasp:

5887360

I wanted something shocking and terrifying. A complete reversal of roles. So, I tapped into my inner Aliens vibe, and played Chrysalis to that...

Not so much fun when you're the minion...

Of course, S5 might make a complete liar out of me...Starlight may be the Big Boss this season...

Crystalheart

And then at the start of season six, the Crystal Empire froze over. So Chrysalis had nothing to conquer.

7089629
Yet a Changeling was seen in the background...

Things...

5827915 I agree with you. Chryssi is stronger than Starlight. Yes, Glimmer is a powerful Unicorn. But there's now way in hell she can lock horns with a being like Chrysalis. She knocked Sun Butt on her royal FLANK. and we may be getting her RETURN IN sometime during season 6. I read a fan comic where her and a revived Sombra team up and Take out the royal Pony sisters. and in that same comic Sombra POSSESSED Shining Armor and used him to KILLED CELESTIA!. >:) and then Twilight goes nuts and attacks her own Brother, thinking its Chrysalis. Its a good read. i found it on Deviantart.

7119003
I know that comic! Could you provide a link to it? I haven't been able to find it for ages.

7418823
Those are cool. I like your art style.

7419205
No, I haven't heard of it. To be honest, I don't know that many bands.
