Derpy Hooves was born with several birth defects, the most prominent being an eye problem unable to be fixed by modern magic. That coupled with a cognitive disorder that made her think a little differently than the rest of the ponies her age, and she was the target of all the other foal's jeering and cruelty. It never really bothered her most of the time, nor did she ever blame her classmates for being mean to her. She loved life regardless of it's hardships, and she didn't really think of her disabilities as crippling or anything. She loved everypony, and forgave them for how they treated her.

Though one day, on Nightmare Night, she overheard an argument between her Mommy and Daddy, and listened to the hurtful things said. Her Daddy left, and her Mommy cried. When she tried to comfort her Mommy, she lashed out a Derpy and said means things to her for the first time in her life. Shaken by the angry look in her mother's eyes, full of blame, Derpy left the house to go Trick-or-Treating, hoping the candy and night of costumes would make the sadness go away.

The children taunted her for her costume, and said their usual cruel words that Derpy normally didn't pay any mind, but tonight somehow she couldn't ignore them. They laughed her out of Ponyville, as the tears fell hotly from her eyes, blinding her way as she ran... She found herself lost in the Everfree Forest, wandering idly as she cried and cried, before she bumped into a certain statue... and felt a presence in the air....
