BubblepipeWrangler

E

Vinyl Scratch sits backstage, getting ready for the biggest night of her career. This is the largest crowd she's ever performed for, and the grandest club she's ever performed at. Anypony would have a few jitters, especially since all this happened so fast. There's a lot of pressure on her to perform, and she's worked hard to prepare for tonight. When the moment comes, will she choke, or will the quiet support of a friend help DJ-P0N3 deliver her best show ever?

A note, this story is a continuation from one of my earlier works, What The Heart Wants. If you like one, I hope that you will enjoy the other, but no prior knowledge or reading is expected! The only prerequisite for this story is an appreciation of cartoon ponies.

This was a good read, I like the pacing, and the actual urgency, the settled fear that people get when they are standing in front of a huge crowd. For me it's a fear that drives me back, I can't let myself get in front of a crowd like that often. It's not a comfortable place. [And I've done it before, so much fear.]

Also, this was about the LAST place I would expect to find a Bible verse wedged in. :3

That was a pretty neat read. Well done on capturing the emotion and conflict within her; I'm surprised this hasn't received more attention.

Thanks for the feedback! I worked really hard to present the mental conflict in a way that was still enjoyable to read. As for why it hasn't received more attention... well, I think I did everything wrong there! I focused on telling a short, self-contained story that fits well into the existing canon, I made my own coverart from scratch in Illustrator, and I did a lot of research on how clubs work and what kind of tech DJ P0N3 might be using.

I should have grabbed a piece of art off Equestria Daily, put in at least three humans who "mysteriously" turned up in Ponyville, given Octavia a pack of cigarettes, and had Vinyl "resolve" the problem by cutting herself and whining about how hard life is because she's always getting bullied in school. :derpytongue2: That's the kind of role model little kids need, eh? :unsuresweetie:

Also, great work on that recently-featured story of yours, The Light in the Darkness. I never much cared for the idea of flipping out and murdering your friends before baking them into foodstuffs, or grinding fillies into rainbows, or designing dresses that deliver lethal electrical shocks to their wearers so you can then make dresses out of their fur. :pinkiesick: :rainbowhuh: :raritydespair:

Actually, dreck like that is what pushed me to write stories like this. We need some light in the darkness, y'know?

*bows* Thank you very much for the compliment (though I am a little confused by your use of "recent").

I look forward to making my way through the rest of your stuff.

A surprisingly deep look into the mind of a DJ.

Like, fav and added to my recommendation group.

I spent a lot of time on this story, from the custom cover art (made from scratch, in both senses of the word!) :rainbowlaugh: to getting the "flow" of Vinyl's thoughts and actions right. She's an extremely musical character who also works hard to maintain her "cool", so I couldn't write her as flamboyantly as Rarity. :raritydespair: It was a fantastic exercise in writing, but sadly it is very much wanting for views when compared to other tales of mine like LiiOR.

That's why when folks find the time to read these little stories, it means quite a lot. :moustache:

Very well done. Have a like, a fav, a feature recommendation, and this ribbon:

You're too kind. :twilightblush:

And once again, your feature recommendation hit the nail on the head. I do a ton of research for all of my stories. For this one I focused on music theory and the actual tech used in a DJ's live-spun concert. I checked into what the backstage "prep rooms" are like, what synths/modulators/equalizers/lightboards/repeaters/turntables/general-sound-butchery-gear the DJ would have on hand. I've done a lot of setup and tear-down for AV gear as a roadie myself, so some of this actually came from personal experience. I'll be the first to say it's imperfect, but this isn't a research paper. I only needed to include the tech elements so that the reader would understand Vinyl's professionalism. To do that, I had to put in enough professionalism as a writer to research deep enough for this story.

Real musicians don't just show up and throw together awesome sounds. The more effortless it seems, the harder they prepped beforehand. Or, beforehoof. :raritywink:

At the end of the day, though, what matters most to me is that folks are enjoying my work. So thanks for letting me know this story really spoke to you. I try to... well, as Parliament put it in their song Supergroovalisticprosifunkstication...

"Give the people what they want when they want, and they wants it all the time!"

(Yes, that was also part of the inspiration for this story. :twilightblush: )

Nothing like extra research to keep things interesting
