Blog Number 128: The Statistical Comeback Edition

(No, this isn't about mathematical vampires: given how my blogs are going, I just wondered if I should start calling myself something like that). :twilightsheepish:

Couple of things. First of all, following up from Blog Number 125 (Incomplete or Cancelled?), I will reassign my incomplete fics to the "on hiatus" category.

It strikes the best balance between "this is definitely going nowhere anytime soon" and "I might come back to it one day", so it seems the best status update to go for.

Secondly, Now The Wind Has Changed Forever made it onto Equestria Daily! After a two-and-a-half-month wait. :twilightoops:

The fic itself proved seemingly controversial upon its release on FIMFiction two-and-a-half years back, though I gather that was mostly because of the more general issues surrounding Spitfire herself as a character. Which is understandable, because I've been wondering about that myself. Heck, it's half of what motivated the fic.

Speaking of which: its acceptance on Equestria Daily has been... :applejackunsure: OK, I guess.

Well, to be frank, I mostly submit there for the "bragging rights" these days, as opposed to any kind of numerically significant reception anymore.

Used to be an EqD feature would be like publishing the fic all over again. Is EqD in general just not getting the traffic it used to, or are my fics specifically the problem? Like, I dunno, a marketing problem, or something?* :applejackunsure:

* I almost suspect it's no coincidence that my particular "Underappreciated Author Spotlight" got the most tepid comment reception of the bunch. And that's discouting... whatever the hell that most recent irrelevant exchange in the comments was supposed to be. :rainbowhuh:

And lastly, bringing back from the dead my old "statistics" section, which I haven't tackled since... Tuesday 24th December 2019? Whoa.

Whew. A lot has happened since then. My word, hasn't it just? :pinkiecrazy:

Is EqD in general just not getting the traffic it used to, or are my fics specifically the problem?

It's definitely the former. No worries!

I suppose it makes sense, given the observed decrease in fanfic output over the last few years, and the general decrease in fandom buzz. Still kind of a shame, though.

"One! That's one appropriate pop culture reference! Eh, eh, eh!"

I think EqD, and maybe Pony as a whole, is facing a multiple-whammy. The show ended just before 2020, 2020 was a global crapstorm of pain and distraction, there were painfully few cons last year, and instead of gathering as one the fandom waged a few mini-civil-wars. There’s been a lot on people’s minds, and an idyllic world of friendship has never seemed less relatable. I don’t think the broader Pony-sphere is done for, but that’s going to have an effect.

As for marketing more broadly: it’s far more art than science. I’d be happy to look things over, compose a cover, etc., if you’re ever interested. But one never knows where lightning’s going to strike.

I was thinking more the last few years in general. Look at the site statistics and you'll see what I mean. Output appears to have reached a certain plateau.
