How To Write Pinkie Pie: By Tangerine Blast

Everyone says they love how I write Pinkie so here's a guide on how I do that. (Note: This is just how I do it. There's nothing wrong with how other people write her. I'll be speaking like what I'm saying is an objective fact but it's actually just my style. Just to... to get that out of the way.)

First off, lemme tell you how Nano is going!
As of writing this I'm at 44 thousand words which means I only have to do three thousand the next two days and I will have written a whole novel. Heck, I think I'll even finish the novel since I seem to be at a good wrapping up point. Soon my name will be in published lights!

[TOP 10] Dynamic Duo: Rarity and Pinkie! · 7:48pm Jun 4th, 2020

Rules:
1. Rarity and Pinkie do not have to be romantically inclined. The list is based off how they work off each other in the fic not how well they kiss each other (though that's nice too)
2. Doesn't have to be complete.
3. Has to be rated T or below. I'm a family friendly pussy.

I've always loved Pinkie and Rarity. They were my first OTP back in the early days when I was a fresh spring blossom. These stories capture that dynamic they have so very very well.

Alright, fine, I’ll admit it. This one is more about Rainbow and Applejack than it is about Pinkie and Rarity. But, hear me out, Pinkie and Rarity make this story. They team up to prank RD and AJ (brilliant!) and then get pranked back and have a very stressful time that they get through together! And then… that ending! Dang that ending elevated this story from pretty good to great. I won’t spoil it because I would definitely recommend it as a read.

"I'm sorry, dear," Rarity said putting on her sweetest smile. "Could you repeat that? For a moment it sounded like you and Rainbow were planning on getting married."

Oh right! Hitched was farmpony for marriage! Immediately all of the dreadful what-ifs crumbled and blew away. Oh right! Hitched was farmpony for marriage! Pinkie felt a rising giddiness, like a bottle of shaken sarsaparilla, as her whole body began to vibrate.

Gosh it’s just so silly. Pinkie and Rarity are just written so well.

Danger Zone
by Summer Dancer

Sometimes you can write about an anti-earth pony meeting and have it be funny as heck. Rarity and Pinkie’s relationship isn’t the focus of this one either but dang does it play a big part. They, foolishly, stumble onto some anti-earth pony weirdos and get into a bit of a scrap. And Rarity defends Pinkie! She blasts those crazies back with her magic and takes off! The way they bounce off of each other with their dialogue is a good good funny time and it’s a prime example how these two can be one of the funniest pairs together. It’s dramatic! It’s fun! It’s the dynamic duo!

Rarity’s eyes slowly narrowed and her lips parted into a un-lady like snarl. Her horn began to glow a brilliant azure, and wisps of magic circled around it, blowing Rarity’s mane back. Before Minuette could take a step backward, a bolt of lightning shot through the crowd, blowing them back. Ginger dropped the saddle, and Pinkie finally managed to writhe away from her stunned captors.

“Stand BACK!” Rarity hollered as Pinkie scrambled to her side. The white unicorn seemed tired from focusing all of her energy into that single spell, but kept her horn ablaze. “BACK, foul brutes! Before I blast you back to the shadows from whence you CAME!”

Get ‘em Rarity! You show those jerks what for!

Hmm so this one is weird. Very weird. It’s kind of hard to see if that makes sense? Like, you read it and there is just so much. But! Dang do Pinkie and Rarity have a good relationship in this one. They both face their greatest fears very literally and magically and it’s only with the help of each other do they break out of this dangerous trap! You can really feel that the only way Rarity could overcome her self worth issues is if Pinkie was right there lifting her up and the only way Pinkie could fight her fear is if Rarity supported her through it. It’s lovely to see such good friendship at such dangerous and terrifying times!

Howls burst into eldritch chuckles. She could see the tips of the shadows looming around her vision, closing in on the view of Rarity galloping further and further ahead, the flash of fangs and the slow lick of a dozen tongues. Her legs burned. She wasn’t going to make it. She might as well just give up and get on with it. What was the point? She’d only slow Rarity down.

“PINKIE!” Rarity skidded to a halt.

“NO!” squeaked Pinkie. “DON’T STOP! GET OUT OF HERE!”

Without a word, Rarity shot towards her, and suddenly her vision was full of whiteness. All twelve jaws opened wide.

It’s so tense but they’d do anything for each other and dang it they’re going to fight this literal and emotional danger together!

First Steps

This one is dead :( but it is too good not to include! Rarity and Pinkie are just a little older and wiser in this one and they are so so in love. But their relationship is rocky and hard and they don’t know how to navigate it. They doubt themselves, they give too much, they don’t stop to think. But they always always come back to each other and try their hardest to make the other happy at the end of the day. It’s just such a nice look at them as a couple and how they would interact and go through a romantic relationship. They love each other gosh darn it and they may be stupid but they at least know that!

“Yeah, I’m okay,” Pinkie said, stealing a quick look to the door through which Slipstream had disappeared. “I just… it’s...” Pinkie eyes began to shimmer as she inspected her elbow. A dark bruise from Slipstream’s grip was beginning to form there. “Rarity, he dragged me, and I was being nice and everything!” Pinkie dropped her gaze and rubbed one of her forelegs against the other. “Rarity,” she asked hesitantly, “Am… am I really your fish?”

Rarity sputtered, resulting in a coughing fit. When her breathing returned to normal, she smiled shakily. “Um... sorry, I suppose that was a bit possessive of me. You are nopony’s fish but your own, certainly not his,” she seethed, her eyes flashing dangerously.

“Oh,” Pinkie replied, lowering her ears with a little sigh. “Well, whoever’s fish I am, I’m glad you’re here with me with me.” Pinkie snorted out a laugh suddenly. “How come I’m the damsel in distress and you’re the knight, Rarity?” she asked. “You’re the one who looks like a princess!”

Wow they’re both so dumb and so in love and I love them more than I can stand.

Cut, Color, Carat, Clarity
by Estee
19,582 words

Now, we all know Estee is great and if you don’t… go… go learn that. The way she takes characters’ thoughts and feelings and really puts them on display is so very personal and gets you into their heads. This story is about Rarity and Pinkie meeting, about these two strange children getting to know each other. Rarity’s trying to open her first store and Pinkie’s trying to make friends and it just makes sense that they gravitate to each other. This story just makes so much sense.

Time passed slowly in the opened Boutique: an early lesson. A fact which instantly, loudly shattered.

"HI!"

The new arrival abruptly shook herself to get rid of the mist's moisture, turning the pink body into something of a blur. That state then maintained.

Estee writes them so good! So good that’s how they think and act and exactly how they talk.

What Is a Pie?
by The Iguana Man
15,364 words

A new story? A story that came out this *checks notes* year beats out all the stories from forever? Yes baby! This is exactly what I want from my Pinkie Pie and Rarity stories! I want Pinkie being fun. I want Rares being perceptive. I want them both being mature and loving friends and this story gives me all that! It’s them having a good time at the spa, trusting in each other and just being really good friends. So solid. So special.

“Indeed,” Rarity said as she helped her friend down from her chair. As she did, though, something occurred to her. “Although, I do have to ask: why didn't you simply say something about how you were feeling before?”

“Oh, that?” Pinkie replied cheerfully. “That's because watching you and the spa ponies get all scared every time you thought I was gonna do something wrong was really funny!”

That is exactly how I expect dialogue between these two to go. Mmmhm good stuff. Good stuff.

The Road to Ponyville
by GlueFactory

Okay so there’s like five different stories with this same premise (which I love and is very very great) but I 100% think this is the best one. It starts with Rarity being an absolute jerk and Pinkie being a complete idiot. Not really appealing right? But remember, it’s season 2 and they still have a lot of character development to do. And this story does character development to a T! The way they interact, the challenges they go through, it all builds and adds until the end when they make up and it all feels so very real and deserved. For being so relatively short the story sure does pack a lot of good emotional build up and satisfaction so you’re left loving these two goofballs even more than when you started.

Pinkie opened her mouth.

And stuck out her tongue.

"THBPBPTHPT!"

Rarity was flabbergasted. If somepony had told her that polka dots and horizontal stripes were all the rage in Canterlot, you still couldn’t get a more shocked and disturbed expression.

“Y-y... b-b... I...,” the words weren’t coming out for her.

Pinkie gave a triumphant “Humph!” She had finally put the fashion pony in her place.

Rarity seethed at the party pony, her cheeks puffed and bright red. But she still couldn’t think straight. No witty retort, no well-crafted insult, nothing.

Nothing except, "THBPBPTHPT!"

They’re so great. I would die for these two goofballs.

Hay-oh, Welcome to Hayburger
by MyHobby

You ever click on a story and think it’ll just be a fun little romp in the slice of life tag and some relatable comedy of Rarity working fast food? But then it's actually a really fascinating look into the beginning of a beautiful friendship? This story is just a *chef’s kiss* take on Pinkie and Rarity’s first interaction. Of course they don’t get along at first! Rarity’s in a low place and Pinkie’s in a new town on a big high so they don’t really… work. But then… but then! They talk, they come to an understanding, Pinkie buys a dress. It’s such a beautiful start to their amazing friendship.

The cash register cha-chinged in its merry little way. Rarity hovered a little slip of paper over her shoulder and impaled it with no small amount of satisfaction atop the rest of the day’s orders. “Your order should be up in a few moments. Have a nice day.”

The mare gasped. “Aw, thank you! That’s such a sweet thing to say!”

Rarity’s like: [insert standard greeting here]
And Pinkie’s like: I have never felt such love in my entire life.
It’s a good time this story is.

On Her Mind
by JaketheGinger
4,748 words

Whaaaaat? An Equestria Girls story getting number two spot with all these horses in contest? It’s more likely than you think. Rarity’s trying to deal with the fact that like… alternate universes exist? Magic exists? Horses exist? Horses???? Also, like, her classmate turned into a demon or something, whatever. She can’t deal with her world turning upside down like this! Thankfully Pinkie’s there to just put some things into perspective and tell her that life, and friendship, goes on. I love their interactions in this and how their feeling about everything going on is shown through everything they say and do to each other. The writing is… so stellar dude it’s great man.

“Mhm. I’m talking about what happened at the Formal Fall,” Rarity explained, and Pinkie mouthed an ‘Ooooh’. “I can’t stop thinking about what took place there, and what it means for everything we know. Magic… it exists. It’s real and that unleashes a swarm of terrifying prospects and questions.”

“Like what?”

“Well for starters, who else could turn into a demon like Sunset did? What if there was someone out there, right now, taking control of this magic and uses it for nefarious ends?” Rarity straightened, her hands tightened on her skirt. “And there’s us. What even happened to us, Pinkie?”

“Simple!” Pinkie raised a finger, smiling brightly. “We grew extra ears and our hair got really long, then we kicked major bad guy butt and looked super good while doing it!”

I love how they talk to each other! How they think, how they react! It’s such a good character study of these two individually and together.

Unbound Skies
by Luminary
53,633 words

I’m sorry this is a dead one too! I’m just addicted to pain! Unbound Skies definity gets the top spot because of just how interesting their relationship gets to be in this AU. Rarity’s from far away, she’s pretty, she’s nice, she’s rich. But she also doesn’t have a problem killing people that are probably going to kill her. Pinkie likes her, she wants to be friends. But Rarity is dragged from her home into something like a war and is killing people. How do they reconcile that? How do they navigate their relationship with this tension? It’s sooooooooo good I want to read it a thousand times.

Rarity turned, at least enough to raise one white hoof to place it on Pinkie’s shoulder. “I don’t regret what I did, to earn myself the chase. But I wish I’d chosen someone else to ask for aid. If I’d been thinking at all clearly, I wouldn’t have showed up in your shop. I wouldn’t have ruined the life of such a wonderful and good pony. No matter how important this might be, I can’t justify that.” She dipped her muzzle and folded her ears in a look of perfect contrition. “I’m sorry, Pinkie Pie. For your shop. For all the ponies you would have helped.”

Silence was the option Pinkie stuck with; her brain was thinking way too many things, unable to believe that Rarity thought that—a bunch’a lost stuff—was the problem. Her heart was feeling way too many things to figure out what needed doing. Her mouth wanted to say too many things, too. So in the end, it was her leg that stepped up to the plate. She raised a foreleg and showed Rarity her hoof. It was dirty, damp, a little bruised…

… and soaked in the now-dried lifeblood from what was once a living pony.

Without another word, her legs took her away from Rarity and down below decks, leaving the unicorn alone.

The TENSION! The excitement! The drama!

DISCLAIMER: While I have read a heckin' lot of fanfics I haven't read them all. Please tell me if there's a fanfic you think should have been on this list because I might just not have read it! Or I have and we can talk about the good horse words.

Another fine Estee take on this dynamic is Dark Thoughts From a Manehattan Parking Stable at Four in the Morning. Again, incredible voicing, and a good look at seeing just what these two do when left with naught but their own thoughts and a very cruelly designed parking garage.

There's also Pascoite's The Gift of Laughter. Similar to Cut, Color, Carat, Clarity in the sense that it's Rarity and Pinkie meeting while younger, but in this case, it's shortly after they get their cutie marks. And in both cases, their talents are running wild, each of them barely able to focus until the other helps her. It's equal parts adorable and heartwarming.

As was this list in general. Thanks, I really needed something like this.

this is a cool blog :O

And to think I didn't respond to this nearer the time. That was rude of me. :facehoof:

In essentials: thank you for the review of Transience, and it's great to see such enthusiasm more generally! What a lovely blog. Even pointed me to a few fics of interest. :scootangel:

In detail: Yeah, Transience is one of those fics that got mixed reception for being weird. I don't blame 'em: see, I was trying to be a bit mind-screwy with that one, and I think I overdid it (I was going for "sorta magical, sorta otherworldly, sorta symbolic"). The result wasn't everyone's cup of tea, and I consider that a problem to avoid in the future.

That said, I really liked the role-reversal of Pinkie being the vaguely sane one and Rarity being the crazy one, and especially their differing attitudes and approaches to the prospect of growing old. You can probably guess my favourite bit to write was the third chapter, where it all comes to a head, and especially the bit with the terracotta statues and Pinkie talking Rarity out of her funk. Add in some horror elements to give their struggle an extra edge, and - if I'm not keen to try something that mind-screwy again - I'm at least eager to come back to these two and find new angles and ideas like that.

Also, Pinkie and Rarity make an excellent team-up. You have good taste in ponies! :raritywink::pinkiehappy:

Well, that's all for now. Just wanted to make sure you received a comment, after I'd noticed recently I never left a reply. Thanks again for the lovely blog. It's great to see such enthusiasm.
