How To Write Pinkie Pie: By Tangerine Blast · 5:20am Dec 13th, 2022

Everyone says they love how I write Pinkie so here's a guide on how I do that. (Note: This is just how I do it. There's nothing wrong with how other people write her. I'll be speaking like what I'm saying is an objective fact but it's actually just my style. Just to... to get that out of the way.)

Now, there are three pillars to keep in mind when writing Pinkie. Three character traits that if Pinkie doesn't have I simply don't consider her to be Pinkie anymore. Three traits that if she has she's pretty much always feels well rounded. She has to be Pure, she has to be Dumb, and she has to be Normal.

Let's break these pillars down.

Pure:
Pinkie is so very sweet. Remember when she found a pool that gave her the ability to make clones of herself? And her only idea of how to use that power was to make sure she didn't make any of her friends sad by not hanging out with them? Her first and only thought in any situation is how to help others.

When writing Pinkie I never give her any thoughts that aren't full of Pureness. She doesn't like when people are hurt, she sees the best in others, and her instinct is to always get someone to smile. She's nice! Even when she's mean she's nice.

Dumb:
Now, you might be thinking, Tangerine, how do you give a Pure character flaws? All characters have flaws! And we all know for a fact Pinkie can be mean. Remember when Fluttershy had stage fright? She was very mean there!

Well yeah, because she's dumb. And I say that with love in my heart and respect for her character. Girl can be an idiot at times.

She wants to be nice. She wants to do the right thing and bring joy to the world. But sometimes she doesn't know how to do that! Sometimes she just spills secrets because she's just talking and not thinking about what she's saying. Sometimes she insults people because she has a hard time putting herself in their feelings.

There's a comic where Pinkie gets a magic apple that can grant any wish any number of times. And what does she do with this god like power? Tries to throw a party. Tries to make everyone happy. But she's so caught up in her ideas that she doesn't notice she's actually upsetting people until one of her friends points it out to her. Perfect. Pinkie Pie to a tee.

Now this isn't to say she can't be smart! She can be really observant and thoughtful in ways others don't often think about. She can be smart at times but she can also be kind of dumb. And it's crucial that she's kind of dumb.

Hay, she can be a genius and still dumb! Like in Skywriter's Contraptionology! where Pinkie is literally a mechanical genius and built a living robot but can't tell when her friends literally go insane. .

Girl has to be two thirds of the way to a himbo is what I'm saying. Giving her the third himbo trait is up to you.

Normal:
This pillar I know is giving people pause. Normal? You may say. Isn't the very essence of Pinkie weird? Isn't she the cartoon character in this fantasy story? Can't she predict the future and whatever?

Yes. But that is exactly why she needs to be Normal.

Pinkie works a retail job. Pinkie has sisters she has complicated relationships with and didn't grow up in a wealthy family. Pinkie isn't a celebrity or run the biggest family in Equestria. Pinkie can't talk to animals or fly at the sound barrier or the laundry list of god like abilities Twilight has. She can kinda predict the future and kinda do magic party tricks.

This is essential for me. You give Pinkie too much power, too much pop and pzazz and she starts feeling like a gimmick more than a character. She is also the only one who is aware that everything in their lives is insane. She's standing gobsmacked at everything everyone else is doing and that's why she doesn't even register she's weird to their eyes.

Pony Life is a great example of this. That show's plot is the Pinkie goes to work every day and her friends come in and drag the most ridiculous chaos with them. But Pinkie's too nice to say anything and too dumb to notice those things that she should say.

Am I explaining this right? Pinkie breaks the sense of suspension of disbelief. Not by looking at the camera and winking but by looking at Twilight do anything and going 'I am friends with one of the most powerful creatures in existence. That is so poggers'

And that's Pinkie! I hope this makes sense at all. It makes sense in my head and now, hopefully, you can write Pinkie like me. The only person you should try to emulate, obviously.
