I had no idea it came back this week.

From what I've seen, they're doing some kind of weird "every other Friday" release. No idea why.
4904430 That sounds like an attempt to stretch out the season. That's kinda nuts.
They really should change the episode name in my opinion
FIFTH!!
This episode, OR the premiere one of the new TMNT series.
Hmmmm..........
Decisions, decisions...........
so we know nothing about this episode other than it's today for some reason
Darn it I forgot this was a Friday episode and I had told myself to check Equestria Daily but shot the idea down because it was Friday
If nobody else is going to.,.....
Odd, I thought they were holding off on the second half until August.
4904450
They are this was just a surprise episode.
4904428
The hype is real.
4904430
Because they want literally no one to watch it? The kids are in school, the adults are at work.
4904457
It's July. What school?
But yeah, this does feel suspiciously like deliberate schedule sabotage.
... Where'd this tinfoil hat come from?
Pinkies instrument looks like something out of a Dr.Suess Book.
4904458
Day camp, then.
4904458
Illuminati confirmed.
When does/did the episode premiere?
NO! 😡
4904453
Ah, okay.
"Apple-solutely."
The fact I laughed at that for a solid thirty seconds shows just where I'm at on the evolutionary totem pole.
This episode was basically me whenever I watch EVO or any fighting game vids.
4904430
4904432
That's not actually what's going on at all. They're showing underpromoted "surprise special peeks" on Friday afternoons as a treat for the actual target demographic, who are in the back half of their summer vacation right now. That's how they released the new Equestria Girls special, and ONE--JUST ONE--season 8 episode. The hiatus ends on August 4 (which is a Saturday); this was announced at SDCC DURING the episode broadcast.
4904479
Oh. Well. There we have it then. Thanks for setting me straight, Moth.
4904484
Always happy to head misinformation-based mass hysteria off at the pass.
...
So, uh... Anyone wanna take a crack at what the moral was here? 'Cause I've got squat.
This episode would've been a lot better if I knew what the message was supposed to be. They avoided making it a rehash of Horse Play, but in doing so, they lost the thread entirely. Was it supposed to be about clinical depression? It doesn't work, since it treats the
bagpipesyuvidiphone like a cure-all fix, and that's not how depression works. Was it supposed to be about practice making perfect? It doesn't work, because Pinkie's yuvidiphone playing is still horrendous, and her friends outright tell her they don't care how good she is. Was it about addiction? It doesn't work, because Pinkie gets the yuvidiphone back in the end. Dang it, what are you trying to say?!And the real kicker is that there's not much else going for the episode. The humor is standard fair (not outstanding, but passable), the return of Pinkie's depressed form just feels like shoehorned fan service, and there's never an explanation as to why losing this one specific thing makes Pinkie so upset. Quite poor, DHX. Must try harder.
4904491
I believe the moral is that there's no shame in doing something you're not very good at as long as it makes you happy. The issue is that this message isn't properly applicable here, since the action in question causes every other pony nearby to run away screaming.
4904498
It works just fine. They were just having fun at the expense at the common joke of everyone hating bagpipes.
So, I missed this episode because the stupid live streams weren't working for some reason. What happened in this one?
4904500
But see, the joke doesn't work. Because we know the instrument is not supposed to sound like Pinkie's butchered honking. When bagpipes are used in comedy, they play the instrument like normal and just have everyone around them hate it. I'll be the first to admit that bagpipe music is an acquired taste, but when the episode itself acknowledges the difference between good bagpipe music and bad bagpipe music, then they're missing the point.
4904498
I had a thought that's what they were going for, but it still doesn't work because we don't know why Pinkie needs this thing to be happy. She's lasted without it for seven and a half seasons, for Pete's sake; why is losing the yuvidiphone such a devastating blow to her now of all times?!
4904520
Everything is a devastating blow for her these days.
4904498
Not quite, the moral wasn’t for Pinkie, it was for the others.
The moral is to support your friends in the things that make them happy, even if they aren’t good at it. I agree the moral is a bit muddied by the extreme overdone outcomes of her playing for the sake of comedy. Her playing ruined the apple harvest and stripped a poor passing bird of its ability to fly, “do what makes you happy” doesn’t apply to harming others and property damage. I don’t think the kids watching will overthink the episode that much though.
4904491
The best I can make of this one is that you shouldn't let your friends discourage you from doing something you love just because you're bad at it/it inconveniences them.
After letting it stew in my head for a bit? I realized the bagpipes MIGHT be a metaphor for transgenderism. But don't take that as gospel, because it's a real stretch.
I am so confused right now. I thought the show was supposed to come back this August.
Not that I'm complaining.
Dang it!! I missed this episode!
The summary on the wiki isn't complete yet and it probably won't be watchable for me anytime soon, besides I'm not likely to watch it myself in any event.
So far it mentions they told her how bad she is at playing that instrument, and she's heartbroken over her decision as a garbage collector picks it up. What happens after that? And does Pinkie leave Ponyville forever to start the beginning of a "Captain America Civil War" arc, or does everything turn out all right in the end like it usually has?
If the former, I have no hope for The End in Friend, one of the episodes I WAS willing to give a chance. But fans just eat the dark stuff up, though this show WAS supposed to be lighter, the darkest being sinister villains that sometimes end up dead, which is nothing outside of what would be seen in classic Disney movies.
4904523
Okay, that makes some sense. But couldn't they have done that without making Pinkie's happiness contingent on the ding-dang yuvidiphone? If playing it makes her happy, great. More power to her. But why in the wide, wide world of Equestria did she turn into a depressed wreck just because she gave it up?
Especially since the Mane 6 were very clear and considerate when they first told Pinkie that they didn't think the yuvidiphone was right for her. There was no malice for Pinkie to perceive. And I think the episode knows that, because Pinkie never blamed the Mane 6 for her depression or thought that her friends abandoned her. She was just depressed because... um... The yuvidiphone means so much to her. Why does it mean so much to her? Um, uh... Reasons?
Seriously, a lot of problems of the episode could be solved if they just explained why Pinkie cares about that thing so much, to the point where she can't be happy without it.
4904560
Sure, they could have done that, but the point of the episode wasn’t to establish Pinkie’s love for the yadiphonabathing, it was to establish conflict based around a moral premise while also being entertaining to young children. I don’t expect to see the.... ever again, and if we do, it will be a quick call back without much relevance to any future stories. (Just wait, now that I’ve said this it’ll be the next party canon and become a part of her character)
The yeti phone is a plot device, and when dealing with short time limits, my guess is that the writers felt it was more important to give screentime to gags and jokes than in trying to establish greater meaning and significance to a plot device that will never be seen again. Does that make the overall writing a little weaker? Sure, but I’m okay with that.
4904588
Yeti phone.
This episode left me depressed...
Not in a fun way, either.
Also, why did it air on a Friday? :O

Where's my Discord episode?
4904588
I see your point, and I respect that perspective. But I don't feel like you're seeing my point. I'm not asking for much here. Just a single line of dialogue would've been fine. Here, I'll give you an example:
Oh, you mean this yuvidiphone? The one that is said to bring happiness to all who hear it? What about it?
Boom. Now we know why the plot device is important and why Pinkie is depressed when she gives it up (since Pinkie is usually one to internalize this sort of thing). And they actually put that at the end of the episode, so they knew it was important to the story!
I know you don't find it to be a deal-breaking issue, and again, I see why you think that and I respect that. But it is something of a deal-breaker for me.
4904604
Same here
Seriously!? Please let there be a website to watch it, I need my pony hit.
dude what the hell, friday really?
It was either this episode for some, or the annual Comic Con pony panel.
I feel like the moral itself is all kinds of screwed up.
Yes, do what makes you happy, even if you are not perfect at it.
BUT when what you do literally brings harm upon others, Fluttershy's sleep deprivation and harming business in Ponyville, then you should at the VERY least keep it in private, so you aren't a menace to society.
