Wishing people a happy St. Valentine's often has the opposite of its intended effect.
Those who long for romantic love and companionship but who perceive themselves lacking same are exposed to a surfeit of glib little messages much like this. Stores hinting that you should buy your sweetheart a special something can be hard to take when you don't have one. It's difficult to feel unloved, exponentially more so when you feel alone in this.
So, please, take this little message in its most literal, broken-down form. I am wishing that each and every one of you has a happy day today. And—whatever form it may take, be it romantic, filial, platonic—I hope that you all feel loved in some way today.
At the very least know that, if you are reading this, I love you, just for being out there and reading my words. It means a lot to me, and I hope you feel that.

You all should do as we do here in Finland, and celebrate today as the Day of Friendship. It's magic, you know!
What's even sillier is that if you're happily single, every piece of media goes out of its way today to insinuate that you did something wrong in life. I mean, more so than usual.
Which sucks cause deep down we're so happy for the happy couples out there, but it's just, like, dang.

If I'm being totally honest the Singles Awareness Day concept always bugged me a little? At least in how I often see it used online--that is, in an "eye for an eye" fashion.
Which is counterproductive IMO. I mean yeah, Valentine's commercialization is the worst, but being in a loving relationship with another person is absolutely fuckawesome and I'd never want to take that away from them.
I'm all for with a day dedicated to love and connection. I just wish we could celebrate all types of both, I guess.

I find it increasingly hard as I get older, personally.
No, not for that reason, silly living people.
As one of unlife's contrarians (the sort of person that divorced humanity in my third year of infant school), in my youth, it was much easier to scowl disapprovingly at the whole kit-caboodle that everyone else was getting into on its most prominent day from my dark corner, superior in my moral low-ground. But with the internet in particular makes it increasingly diffult to do so when there are other people in the corner as well. It forces me into an ever-increasing escalating game of one-uplichship, because dammit, how can I be different from everyone if everyone is hedging in on my turf? To paraphrase the famous saying goes, why would I want to be a member of any curmudgeon group that would have me as a member?
Dammit, humanity, what atrocies do I have to commit to maintain my position of immoral superiority?! Do I need to, like, disembowl planets full of puppies and kittes and broadcast-psi-burn it into your collective racial memories or something? I mean, REALLY. Cut a lich a break, why don't you?
Unfortunately, this year, what with this being the only day this week in which panto is not involved, I have to instead spend my time on the exciting tasks of painting the current batch of Aotrs ground forces and the even more thrilling-but-necessary job of copying up, errata'ing compliling and then indexing all the D&D spells for the subset of rules we use (four/five hours yesterda and I went from H to halfway up L), which actually now I think about and what day it is is a bad idea to mention somewhere even plasuibly distantly where any version of Twilight Sparkle might see it because it would lead to Horrors Unimaginable To Bleakbane and I probably ought to start shoring up the cross-dimensional wards or something now didn't I as if I didn't have enough to do.

On the general point: I've never personally been a huge fan of Valentine's Day, regardless of whether or not I've been in a relationship at the time, but most of that is to do with its absurd over-commercialisation. Apart from those very few people who try to make out that being in a relationship makes them better than those who aren't, I'm happy for anyone who takes the time to think of those most special to them.

Hearts and Hooves day was wonderful. All of her friends were out with their significant other, their special somedragon, or other good special friend to enjoy the day. Even Fluttershy and Discord had taken off to… wherever it was that Discord went whenever he was not tormenting Twilight. It was quiet, which was just perfect for Her Highness, the Princess of Friendship (and Castle Librarian). She had just settled down with a dozen books, only seven of which she had already read, flat on her belly in the Librarian Throne (i.e. a dozen cushions on the library floor that kept her off the chilly crystal), when she thought she heard a noise in the map room.
After a quick dash in the hopes that some critical Hearts and Hooves day mission was in the air, she trudged back into the library.
False alarm.
About four hours later and after another half-dozen false alarms, along with a trip down to the kitchen to brew up an unnecessarily complicated cup of coffee, Princess Twilight Sparkle was about ready to abdicate her throne, go down to Bon Bon’s candy store, and eat her way through all of the leftover inventory.
The faint ruffling of leaves on her book distracted her for a moment, then the magical energy grew into a blazing flash of light in the middle of the History section, and when she could see again, Flash Sentry blinked back at her.
He looked rather odd, with a bouquet of snow roses stuffed in his mouth, a box of chocolates tucked under one wing, and a solid gallon of butter-nut ice cream sitting on his back, but the baffled expression in his eyes told the whole story.
“Let me guess, Flash,” said Twilight with a brief moment to rest a hoof against her forehead. “You were moping around the Crystal Empire on this day of all days, and you had the misfortune of wandering into Princess Cadence’s line of sight.
He nodded.
She sighed, but with a smile.
Getting to her hooves, she headed for the door. “Come on, let’s get the ice cream into the freezer and see what she sent for chocolates. Then we can talk for a while before you catch the train—” Twilight sighed again and rolled her eyes “—for the trip back. Seriously, give the Goddess of Love the ability to teleport somepony else, and she gets all shippy.”
“Are you going to smear lipstick around my face again?” asked Flash from around the roses.
“It makes her happy,” explained Twilight Sparkle. “And you don’t mind, do you?”
“Not at all. I mean, no I think I can tolerate it.” Flash gave a little concealed smile as he trotted along behind Twilight Sparkle on the way to the kitchen.

Yeah, unfortunately I got back to my perfectly normal pony hive to discover that Skywriter's guest room had the iron bars sawn off the windows. On the stone bed-slab was a single piece of paper containing a picture and a note:
